Workbench TM filename shortened to 8 characters

Has anyone experienced this problem? Any TM name longer than 8 characters is shortened in Workbench once it is open, ie. the filename stays as it is, but in recent TMs list in Workbench it is shortened and when I reopen Workbench again, it says it cannot find the last TM. Any ideas? I am running Windows Me.
