Réaliser ces photographies est indispensable dans les enjeux – et non les devoirs – de mémoire qu’elles induisent, construisent en partie, cernent.
I realise that enjeux can mean stakes, or issues, perhaps even challenges. And normally devoir is a duty, a must. In this context I am not sure any of these words fit and am unsure how to best translate it. This part of the text is generally talking about how documentary photographs can relate to memory and history.

I'm attempting here to grasp the expressive sense of this phrase. There is a subtile distinction being made here that asks the artist to trust his eye instead of trying to please received ideas. N'est-ce pas?

duties of memory = racism of the past, for example, remembered by a society so isn't repeated
matters of memory = conflicts in memory from different groups/sides; a different interpretation of historical events?
