RPN

English to French Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering bouteilles de gaz
In the case of rupture due to over-pressurisation the action results detail the qualification testing and in-service application testing (i.e. durability and damage tolerance testing) that show this failure mode/effect to have an RPN of 40.

What does RPN stand for ?

Il y a le choix, Florence ! Il n'y a pas UNE bonne réponse mais une multitude. Rien qu'à voir le nombre de réponses intelligentes et toutes différentes, on s'en doutait.

No, wrong search: only 13 hits On the first glance "nombre de priorité de risque": About 35.000 results (0,51 seconds) looks being impressive, but after turning to page 2 Google indicates 'Page 2 of about 13 results (0,21 seconds)'
What about "RPN” & "nombre de priorité de risque"? Result: About 4 results (0,27 seconds)

Same behaviour with "indice de criticité"?

"indice de criticité": About 9.560 results (0,29 seconds) and after turning to page 2: Google same indication: 'Page 2 of about 9.560 results (0,27 seconds) '
What about "RPN” & "indice de criticité" ? Result: Page 2 of about 160 results (0,25 seconds)

Similar results with "Risk Priority Number” & "indice de criticité" (145 hits) and
"Risk Priority Number” & "nombre de priorité de risque" (2 results (0,36 seconds)

Conclusion: Sometimes the 1st glance is misleading. You should always go to page 2 for verification.
And you cannot check only the one you prefer. You have to check all possibilities.

Result "indice de criticité" has a lot more of pertinent hits than "nombre de priorité de risque" (10 to 40 times more).

@Kim It's hard to be convinced by a choice which results in 13 hits when googled, but I may be wrong.
Kim Metzger Feb 9, 2020:
Better?

@Kim Your reference is an awful translation, I hope it's a machine one. It doesn't bring anything to "nombre de priorité de risque" (straight literal translation) being the right translation.

Johannes Gleim Feb 9, 2020:
criticality The risk has no 'priority' on it's own. It's the product of severity of the event, the probability of occurrence and detection and the severity. It serves to prioritize measures to lower such occurrences and its severity as well as to improve the level of safety.

Sometimes FMEA is extended to FMECA (failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis) to indicate that criticality analysis is performed too.
:
The analysis is sometimes characterized as consisting of two sub-analyses, the first being the failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), and the second, the criticality analysis (CA)
:
The FMEA can be accomplished without a CA, but a CA requires that the FMEA has previously identified system level critical failures. When both steps are done, the total process is called a FMECA.

English term (edited): RPN (Risk Priority Number)

l’indice de criticité ou indice de priorité du risque (IPR)

RPN stands for 'Risk Priority Number' but this is surely not asked. As the question was asked in the English to French language pair, you also like to know what the corresponding French term is:

Probability
. The likelihood of the failure occurring.
Risk Priority Number (RPN)
. Severity (of the event) × Probability (of the event occurring) × Detection (Probability that the event would not be detected before the user was aware of it)
Severity
. The consequences of a failure mode. Severity considers the worst potential consequence of a failure, determined by the degree of injury, property damage, system damage and/or time lost to repair the failure.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Failure_mode_and_effects_analy...

Failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA) is an extension of failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).

FMEA is a bottom-up, inductive analytical method which may be performed at either the functional or piece-part level. FMECA extends FMEA by including a criticality analysis, which is used to chart the probability of failure modes against the severity of their consequences. The result highlights failure modes with relatively high probability and severity of consequences, allowing remedial effort to be directed where it will produce the greatest value.
:
Criticality ranking
Failure mode criticality assessment may be qualitative or quantitative. For qualitative assessment, a mishap probability code or number is assigned and entered on the matrix. For example, MIL–STD–882 uses five probability levels:
Failure Probability Levels (MIL–STD–882)
escription Level Individual Item Fleet
Frequent A Likely to occur often in the life of the item Continuously experienced
Probable B Will occur several times in the life of an item Will occur frequently
Occasional C Likely to occur some time in the life of an item Will occur several times
Remote D Unlikely but possible to occur in the life of an item Unlikely, but can reasonably be expected to occur
Improbable E So unlikely, it can be assumed occurrence may not be experienced Unlikely to occur, but possible
:
Recommendations
After performing FMECA, recommendations are made to design to reduce the consequences of critical failures. This may include selecting components with higher reliability, reducing the stress level at which a critical item operates, or adding redundancy or monitoring to the system.
:
FMECA report
A FMECA report consists of system description, ground rules and assumptions, conclusions and recommendations, corrective actions to be tracked, and the attached FMECA matrix which may be in spreadsheet, worksheet, or database form.
