I'm working on an Omani text, and at the beginning of one of the sections, it has this poem by Mohammed Al-Balushi.
رفرفي أجنحة النورس
لا تقفي
واطوي المسافات فثم نداء وهّاج بحمله الحنين
My rough translation:
The fluttering of seagulls never ceases
I traverse distances

The word ''فثم'' is not a lexeme. It is divisible into ''ف'' and ''ثم''. It can be paraphrased into لأن هناك.
ٍVerification: واطوي المسافات فثم نداء وهّاج بحمله الحنين
لماذا يطلب الشاعر من النورس أن يطير و يطوي المسافات؟
لأن هناك نداء و هاجا يحمله الحنين
Hence, the consonant ''ف'' expresses cause and the meaning of ''فثم'' is compound. The translation should mirror this composition. So is my modest opinion وكلكم نظر as we say in Arabic.
Yes! I'm sorry about the typo in the last line with the verb 'to carry', it should be يحمله. However the verb اطوي is what is written in the original text. Also, thank you very much Mr Yahya for your point about the imperatives! This is extremely helpful.
Is it بحمله or يحمله
The last line begins with a misspelled word. It should be written واطوِ, with a single kasra beneath the last و. The final ي is to be omitted in the imperative form.
Of course, as a translator, you have a great deal of leeway to change things around, within justifiable boundaries.
