"Quality leader" seems to be the main suggestion in linguee etc. but would this be correct here in English? Or perhaps "leaders in terms of quality" / "the benchmark when it comes to quality"?

Hello everyone, Thank you for your answers! I haven't posted a question before, having previously only ever lurked silently in the term search answers, so it was great to have so many responses. I still feel quite torn, given the mix of feedback. The discussion being had over whether "quality leader" would work in this context is the reason I posted the question, as I was having the same internal debate with myself! I find the sources posted by Phil to be fairly convincing, except perhaps for second one which was written by Jochen Wirtz, who appears to be a native German speaker. From what I can see, the term "quality leadership" is also used for "leadership in the field of quality management". So I'm still drawn towards the other solutions, just to avoid any confusion over what is being said here. I would be interested to hear feedback on this in particular. Am I obliged to choose an answer? I'm mainly pleased to have my thoughts validated by your helpful feedback! And I'm still open for discussion on this subject. Thanks again, Alice

I've been active on Proz for years in various language combinations (basically Spanish-English and German-English) and the German-English combination is (and continues to be) one of the most discerning (and controversial) areas so let's see how this turns out :)

premium brand I am unconvinced by a direct translation of 'quality leader', largely because I can't find it in my Eichborn or in my commerce dictionaries and I only know 'quality leadership' as a term usually referring to the quality of leadership of personal/organisational leadership styles. Whereas in this case the company is trying to be a market or industry leader in terms of its product quality - so Alice using 'leaders in terms of quality' seems justifiable to me (sorry!). An alternative might be something like 'premium brand' as it suggests market-leading quality designed to differentiate itself (Porter) and grab market share.

There's no need to find other ways of saying it, as Ramey has done. The word has an exact English equivalent.

Thanks, though I think you should preserve "quality leader". Again, there's no need to find ways of expressing it differently to the German.

neutral Dr Sophie Louisa Bennett : A 'quality leader' is a term used of an individual I think - I'd tend towards the version Steffen has suggested 'industry or market leader in terms of quality' or you could go for something more akin to Ramey's suggestion and use 'premium brand'.
