German term
Vorfeldlichtverteilung
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Automotive / Cars & Trucks
This is discussing car headlights. I understand Abblendlichtverteilung as low beam or dipped beam but what is a good solution for 'Vorfeld'? I think this is the area directly in front of the car within the driver's line of vision?

near-field illumination
Flood Beam:
A flood beam is designed for near-field illumination. The reflector distributes the light over a large area in the near field of the vehicle.
Wide beam:
A wide beam pattern is designed, manufactured and intended for near-field illumination. The reflector distributes the light widely in the near field around the vehicle.
Ultra Wide Beam:
An Ultra Wide Beam is intended for close-range illumination. With an extra wide light cone, the reflector
provides particularly extensive illumination in the vehicle’s near field.
Combo beam:
A combo-beam is designed, manufactured and intended for both: far-field and near-field illumination. The reflector combines a spot and wide beam to achieve a wide illumination in the near field and a punctual illumination in the far field of the vehicle

In the context of illumination, I think it’s safe to assume Nahfeld=Vorfeld, e.g. https://www.doitgarden.ch/de/p/621133700000/osram-ledriving-...

puddle lights/entry lights
I’ve found various vehicle parts that go by Vorfeldleuchten in German and ‘puddle lights/lamps’ in English; for example, VW part no 6R0945291: https://www.kfz-scheuch.at/shop/vorfeldleuchte-spiegelleucht... in German and https://xenons4u.co.uk/vw-golf-mk6-6r0945291-6r0945292-under... in English. Same situation for Mercedes-Benz part no A2038200159.
Basically, they are lights just underneath the wing mirror that illuminate the ground next to the door so you don’t step into a puddle when you get out of the car. There are also other names for them, such as ‘entry lights’.

Without more context, we don't know for certain that it is headlights specifically that are involved. The poster may have (understandably) assumed headlights in a general automotive context. If it definitely IS headlights, of course, you're quite right.

full-beam coverage/illumination
As Jonathan says, Abblendlichtverteilung means low or dipped beam. The opposite of that is full beam, which illuminates the area straight ahead.
Here's a similar term, though I'm not sure I agree with the answer:

The near field and far field are regions of the electromagnetic (EM) field around an object, …
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_and_far_field
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_Field_Communication
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Licht

"Even when conditions would warrant the use of high-beam headlamps, drivers often do not use them.

The influence of the intensity of the apron lighting is summarized as follows: For wet conditions, an increased intensity in the apron lighting increases glare for oncoming vehicles without benefit for the driver.
https://tuprints.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de/8382/7/2019-01-21_Kobbe...
"The new Vionic Series 4"X6" lights by Maxxima are the latest in LED forward headlamp technology incorporating a wider beam for increased road coverage and better up close near field illumination. For increased safety, drivers can now see objects right in front of their vehicles."
https://dev.maxxima.com/products/product_detail/821/Vionic-4...
Mangels Alternativen finde ich das gut verständlich.
[...]
"Patents with only non-English text have been machine-translated to English and indexed, so you can search patent publications using only English keywords."
Das heißt, dein erstes Patent ist maschinenübersetzt:
https://patents.google.com/patent/DE102018204425B3/de
https://patents.google.com/patent/US8723948B2/en

"The second sensor measures the **road surface light**."

Im Kontext heißt es „This is discussing car headlights. … but what is a good solution for 'Vorfeld'? I think this is the area directly in front of the car within the driver's line of vision?”
As I wrote, I would urge Jonathan to disclose more information about his text. Could also be that the person that wrote it wanted to sound smart and that the term we are looking for is actually quite easy... But Jonathan, please. Your turn.

Since „Vorfeldbeleuchtung“ is a new term for motor vehicles, it should not surprise us that "apron lighting" is also new in English.
Etymology Rebracketing of napron (a napron → an apron) from Old French napperon, diminutive of nappe (“tablecloth”), from Latin mappa (“napkin”).

The "Vorfeld" is, as you said, the space directly in front of you when sitting in a car; more I can't say based on this one sentence alone.
Best wishes

This could be about adaptive headlights:
"There are other things that adaptive headlights can do automatically, like switching between high and low beam – often known as high-beam assist....Adaptive headlights detect the light from an oncoming car’s headlights and pick the right moment to automatically switch to low beam."
