Dutch term

boord/wal communicatie systeem

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping Railways
The term "wal" here is problematic. Evidently it cannot be translated as shore or embankment.

this is about a communication system between the driver and base.
the expression "aan de wal" also comes up here.

Discussion

Do you have more context to share?
123xyz (X) Oct 13, 2005:
I don't get it...
"Boord" = the car/vehicle and "Wal" = the control centre/planning centre?
it's some kind of two-way communication system obviously, like a babyphone?

track and trace

EDS manufactures Track & Trace: "het systeem bestaat uit drie autonome modules: een centrale walapplicatie, een boordapplicatie op elke materieeleenheid en een communicatiesysteem tussen 'wal' en 'boord" (from EDS website). You could add 'system' or 'communication system' to 'track and trace', depending on the context in your document, but track and trace will be universally understood within the sector in UK/USA.

As our answers are so different, I'd want to ask the client to clarify what it is.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Harry Borsje : this focusses on locating an object (like an AGV, maybe), not on communication between the train driver and e.g. central control\\Re: still doesn't fit the askers description

It also applies to vehicles themselves. For use of boor-wal communicatie (track and trace) in Dutch trains, for immediate fault alerts to technicians, run a Search for 'boord-wal communicatie' and click on Strukton Rail.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "In fact all the answers fit - the text covers both driver to base and fault alerts. The link you gave was very useful, as it gave me the idea of using the word "office". So many thanks."

It would be ship-shore communication system if the sea were involved, but as it appears to be used on land, why not simply 'driver-base communication system'?
