Dutch term
afsplitsing
Dutch to English
Science
Zoology
Simple enough word but I'm not sure what the correct term is in the context. Text is an interview with an arachnologist about his work on the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean.
Een aantal spinnensoorten paste zich uitermate goed aan de vulkanische omgeving op de Comoren aan. Enkele voorbeelden om te besluiten?
Op Groot-Comoren, dat vulkanisch nog heel actief is, leeft bijvoorbeeld een spin die de grijze kleur aangenomen heeft van de korstmossen die op de pas gestolde lava groeien. De bronsoort is afkomstig uit Madagascar en deze soort die eigen is aan Groot-Comoren is er een **afsplitsing** van.
Could it be "offshoot"? I've come across the term "filiation" in Huitenga's agricultural dictionary but it sounds too much like technical jargon for this job (museum's yearbook intended for the public).

subspecies
If it is not too technical a word for your public.
Oxford dictionary:A morphologically distinct subdivision of a species, esp. one geographically or ecologically (though not usually genetically) isolated from other such subdivisions

Comment: "This lot of creepy crawlies certainly seems to be geographically isolated from the "bronsoort" so this gets my vote. Thanks to everyone."

(separate) branch
Isn't that what they call it? Separate branches in the animal kingdom?

: http://www.austmus.gov.au/palaeontology/research/trilobites0... - maybe possible but you should provide more conclusive refs and give the url of your refs

The url is the one you cited above - but it was not meant to be an exact definition, but a kind of illustration of the way in which one might use the phrase 'separate branch'

offshoot
agree with you. am not 100% it's the only term but it is certainly used in the context.
