Non-PRO (1): Assem Mazloum

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Mohammed Abu-Risha Sep 28, 2007:
علاوة على ما سلف (من راي شخصي قد أصيب فيه أو أخطئ)، أجد أن كلمة "متجر" كلمة عربية جميلة جدا ولكننا لسوء الحظ أصبحنا نستخدم كلمات مستوردة مثل: "مول" "ستور" وحتى ايضا "شوب" ولو تعود مستخدموا اللغة العربية على الكلمات العربية الأصيلة لما استهجنوها.
zkt Sep 28, 2007:
Dear Assem, what is the difference? I don't see it. We all agree that the term سلسلة متاجر is widespread and used by all even if it does not fit the meaning. Now the asker will have to make his choice between a widespread term and the proposed equivalent
Mohammed Abu-Risha Sep 28, 2007:
Let me use analogy to explain a point: in my translation of Olympus digital photography manual, I came across: image, picture, photo, and "a" shot. I twisted Arabic to invent new words, to find at the end that they wanted them be translated all asصورة
Assem Mazloum Sep 28, 2007:
there is " multi-branch stores " AND there is " chain stores " there must be a difference, dont you agree?
Mohammed Abu-Risha Sep 28, 2007:
من وجهة نظري لا أجد في "سلسلة مطاعم..الخ" ترجمة صحيحة فهي لو نظرنا إليها جديا لا تحمل أي معنى... ولغتنا العربية أغنى من أن نستعير ترجمات حرفية من الانجليزية. أرى أن المصطلح العامي قريب للمعنى وهو: متجر متعدد الفروع الخ. ما رأيكم؟
Assem Mazloum Sep 28, 2007:
The McDonald's chain continued to grow... وترجمتها سلسلة مطاعم مكدونالدز وبالتالي هذا يخالف رأيك
Ali Alawadi Sep 28, 2007:
It is highly recommended to approach the "disagree" feature cautiously. Thanks
Ali Alawadi Sep 28, 2007:
Dear peers, there is a difference between chain store (the question) and chain of stores. "chain store" is a multi-branch store owned by one firm. However "chain of stores" is a series of stores that are not necessarily owned by the same firm.

Chain store is a multi-branch store which has many branches and is owned by one company/firm. That means in Arabic متجر متعدد الفروع
Peer comment(s):

disagree Assem Mazloum : your translation means " Multi-branch Stores* and yes, you missed the translation of THE important word "series", sorry.

Dear Assem, seems you mistook "chain store" for "chain of stores", plz verify. Thanks
agree Mohammed Abu-Risha : هذا أقرب للواقع. يعني مثل مكدوتالدز وغيره. نحن في العربية العامية نقول: له فروع في كافة انحاء العالم وهم في الانجليزية يقولون chain stores.

Right you are. Thanks a lot for your valuable input.

Chain stores (also called retail chains) are a range of retail outlets which share a brand and central management, usually with standardized business methods and practices. They are a type of business chain. Such stores may be branches owned by one company or franchises owned by local individuals or firms and operated under contract with the parent corporation. Features common to all chains are centralized marketing and purchasing, which often result in economies of scale, meaning lower costs and presumably higher profits.
