English term

Dollar Store

English to Arabic Bus/Financial Retail Store Types
Actually this one's quite common in Egypt but they don't even have a term for it. They just put up a sign indicating the price range inside. I was wondering if there was a term for the US dollar store.

Thank you for your time and effort helping me, everybody!

To clarify my previous request, I was enquiring about the target country.
Ghada Samir Oct 18, 2008:
Hi! May be if you specified- as already requested- which country you're talking about, this would help answerers to give you better suggestions??
Ahmad Batiran Oct 18, 2008:
Ghada Samir Oct 18, 2008:
Check this out! Pls. see this definition:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consignment
here it says""Consignment shop" is an American English term for second-hand stores that offer used goods at a lower cost than new. Many offer new items as well."
So take care because it's not necessarily 2nd hand items...so it's better to generalize it & try to differentiate between the 2 terms..

Ghada Samir Oct 18, 2008:
Ok Then, good choice!
Nora Medhat (X) (asker) Oct 18, 2008:
Difference A fundamental difference, I guess. Consignment is based on selling items you own via another, at least as far as I've grasped from the dictionary entry. Dollar stores are nothing to do with that. They are basically places you can get certain items cheaper.
Ghada Samir Oct 18, 2008:
? Hello! Then what would be the difference between it & Consignment Store , if u chosen
Alaa Zeineldine Oct 18, 2008:
For which country is the translation bee done?
Nora Medhat (X) (asker) Oct 18, 2008:
Note Actually here's the thing: These stores don't actually offer everything for one dollar. It's more like a generic name. They have a price range that is considered very cheap, but it's more (or less) than one dollar.

What do you guys think?

I know it is an explanation, rather than a term. However, it is widely common in malls to find 2.50 or 7.50 LE or the like.

With this sort of thing, I would not go for a literal translation (since there is none) or an explanation. Here, I would go for brevity and effect -- something that evokes the low prices.

If the phrase occurs in a narrative about the U.S., it would make sense to use the word "dollar" in it, because the reader woudl expect it. For example:

But if the text is generic, this would not work.

If the purpose of the translation is to localize the concept, then a local currency may be worked in. For example:
