Jivdravya or Jivsutra
Explanation:
I remember something like Jivdravya or Jivsutra. Hope someone gets the clue and find the right term.

However, chromsome, in itself is a known word in Hindi and can be simply transliterated.

agree  Dipak (X): school textbooks call it GUNASUTRA.. It may not be the same in case of other Indian languages. Of course, transliteration can be used but I would go for the translation because a person stydied upto 8th and 9th standard is likely to understand it
17 hrs

agree  Arun Singh: Jeevsutra could be more appropriate word than Ginasutra, but in schools text books, Gunsutra is used. Jeev drav is used for Protoplasm and not for chromosomes.
19 hrs

agree  Jitendra Wagh: Transliteration should be okay. I dontthink anybody would understand Gunsutra

GUNASUTRA in Hindi /LONI-JISM in uRDU

Explanation:
Those who have studied in Hindi medium upto maybe 10th standard are familiar with the term GUNASUTRA. This may, however, be difficult for Urdu-knowing people because schooltextbooks are not so developed or simply do not exist. Of course. Bureau of Promotin of Urdu under theMinistry of Education Government of India recommends LONI-JISM. Here. LONI meanscolour. In GUJARATI it is called RANGSUTRA.
