Discussion

...whereas reproducibility places the emphasis on the fact that the test will always produce the same results given the same set of parameters. You might say that amounts to the same thing, but the distinction is certainly made between them.
Tony M Jan 19, 2007:
No, Mark, strictly speaking, they are NOT the same; if my memory serves me correctly, repeatability means that test conditions can be performed the same each time, ...
Mark Nathan (asker) Jan 19, 2007:
Is repeatability the same as reproducibility? I've found lots of references where they are mentioned together.

lack of repeatability

This is what NS OED has to sya:

repeata'bility n.
ability to be repeated; spec. the extent to which consistent results are obtained on repeated measurement (cf. REPRODUCIBILITY):

reproduci'bility n.
the capacity to be produced again; the quality of being reproducible; spec. the extent to which consistent results are obtained when produced repeatedly (cf. REPEATABILITY)

Although this does not make it clear, I think the difference is really to do with repeatability = if you keep on doing the test with the same set of input parameters, does it always give the same result, whereas reproducibility is to do with someone else performing the same test at a different time and place, and whether it will produce the same results.

As I said above, the distinction is a fine one, and I am a bit hazy about it; indeed, the terms are often used imprecisely or interchangeably — but I do know that a specific distinction is often made between them.

French term (edited): défaut de répétabilité

lack of repeatability

Dorland's illustrated medical dictionary:
repeatability (re·peat·a·bil·i·ty) (re-pēt”ə-bil´ĭ-te)  see precision (def. 2).
precision 2. in statistics, the extent to which a measurement procedure gives the same results when repeated under identical conditions. Under certain conditions, may be called reliability, repeatability, or reproducibility.

All that remains is to find what "certain conditions" are...:-) Have a look with www.onelook.com, which consults a lot of dictionaries. In the Schlumberger Oilfield Glossary the two terms are given virtually identical definitions.

I'd use repeatability, I think, on balance.
