agree Christopher Crockett : Well, not "old French", just 18th c. In the documents from that period I've seen it is frequently abbreviated with a capital "S" and a lowercase, but superscripted "r".Both the "mayor", M. LeMair, and the priest/curé Giltay would have rated as "genlemen".
