French term

... qui effectuent une mobilité...

This is my fifth day wading through this text and I'm sure the answer is obvious it's just that the little grey cells are getting weary. The document is a gap analysis for a major state research organisation (French). The mobility concerned could be anything, most probably outside the organisation but not necessarily, public or private sector, in France or abroad. This is the end of this particular section on the recognition of mobility.

Anything I come up with involving mobility seems clumsy and I can't seem to find a way around it without saying something that's not in the original text.

Any bright ideas gratefully received!

Many thanks

Jane

Discussion

Philippa Smith Oct 24, 2016:
@François Sorry, I was responding to your discussion post, not your answer. I'm not familiar with rotating researchers, and it doesn't get many hits.
MoiraB Oct 24, 2016:
Job rotation To me, this suggests something internal to an organisation, whereas mobility is always external. In the case of researchers, it involves working in a different lab, doing an exchange abroad, studying at another university at home or abroad, etc.
Francois Boye Oct 24, 2016:
My response? Why reject the concept of job rotation, which is implicit?
Philippa Smith Oct 24, 2016:
@François I feel you're focusing on the specific features of this particular form of mobility - when mobility is the general term that covers them all. Researcher mobility is a common term.
Francois Boye Oct 24, 2016:
I disagree with Asker! The text in French is clear: it means that researchers have the option of having a job out of their research labs. They can work for other government agencies (that's the meaning of détachement; in the US, they say being a detailee) or for the private sector.
Philippa Smith Oct 24, 2016:
Posted as requested.

And I don't agree about the repetition (sorry Phil!): for me, having "Mobility schemes etc. etc." in one (long) sentence followed by a second with "Researchers who opt for mobility ..." is a logical follow-on and perfectly good English. :-)
Jane Phillips (asker) Oct 24, 2016:
I knew there was an obvious answers out there Which does leave me feeling a little foolish (but then who doesn't from time to time...). This is not a text where "good English" (as opposed to correct English of course) is of prime importance and many of the paragraphs are very repetitive. So I suspect I shall go for Philippa's "opt" - if Philippa would like to enter it as an answer. Thank you one and all!!
Francois Boye Oct 24, 2016:
It's clear in this case! the text is talking about job rotation (being a detailee, working for private companies and organizations)
B D Finch Oct 24, 2016:
"Mobility" can be ambiguous "Mobility" is often used in the contexts of transport and of provisions for persons with reduced mobility.
Philippa Smith Oct 24, 2016:
Hi Jane, not sure if you're wanting to totally avoid the term "mobility", but if not could you not simply say "who opt for mobility"? Then you don't need to worry about the specifics. And it is a term used extensively in HR these days...

agree Elizabeth Slaney : This works and stays close to the source text!

Thanks Liz!
agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Or "who take part in the (mobility) programme,"

Thanks Nikki!
neutral philgoddard : As I mentioned, using "mobility" twice in two sentences is not good style.

And as I mentioned, I don't agree! Style is a subjective thing after all, we all have our opinions on it.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks Philippa, in this case using mobility twice wasn't a problem. Everyone's input much appreciated, as always. Not a difficult question I think my brain had just locked and needed a reboot - there are days like that..."

who do this

I'm assuming you understand the basic meaning and you're just having trouble expressing it in English. 'Mobilité' and 'mobilisation' can be tricky.

However, the French repeats the word in two successive sentences, which you can't do in good English. So why not just say (for example) "mobility schemes" the first time it comes up, and "who do this" the second?

Neat solution but they also have the option of setting up their own business so that starts to make a rather long list of possible mobilities. But thank you as always!
