French term

être dans une logique de

Discussion

Daryo Nov 10, 2012:
survival logic (or logic of survival) is not an invented expression. The problem is how to incorporate it in a sentence that sounds right.

to be concerned with

These young women are so concerned with (simply) surviving/survival and are in such a state of despair...

the people were so concerned with "surviving" that they weren't concerned with playing

agree cc in nyc : My first impulse was "so consumed with survival" but "concerned" is less dramatic. ;-)

logique = mode (here)

agree Daryo : "are so much in a survival mode" ?// Thanks!

Thank you, Daryo! No, that doesn't sound very native-like. You could get away with "are so much in survival mode", but no indefinite article (*a*), I'm afraid. Bonne nuit!

so busy trying to survive that

does not have the same formal sound as 'dans la logique de' but fits in well with the rest
I don't think people in this situation would say 'I was very concerned with my survival'
the thing with être dans la logique is that it can be said about anyone. Someone who thinks they are a victim to a company strategy and so it translates differently for each situatio
Example sentence:

so busy trying to survive that they neglected their own emotional needs

Peer comment(s):

agree B D Finch : Good solution.

neutral cc in nyc : "busy" implies activity, which may or may not be the case here

neutral Marie Jackson : If a more informal register were required, this would be my choice, although cc's point about 'busy' is worth noting.

so focused on (simply) surviving. so focused on survival

another option
Peer comment(s):

agree cc in nyc : without "simply"

agree Marie Jackson : I like this solution best, and I actually like it with 'simply' too, although it's not a necessity. Interesting how we all have different writing styles!

be preoccupied with

For me "être dans une logique" implies having that concern constantly in mind, as when one is preoccupied by something.

disagree Cetacea : This does not make sense in English.

neutral Daryo : you do find it, but rarely and only in translated texts, usually not a good sign.

they are caught up in such a survival struggle

Would not "caught up" translate this - in a figurative meaning?

or simply caught without "up", rather?

see sentence

"..., il a été identifié que ces jeunes femmes sont dans une telle logique de survie et dans un tel état de désespoir qu’elles négligent leurs propres besoins affectifs.

"... these young women are so set in their logic of survival ...."

logic of survival / survival logic = a way of thinking focused on survival;

"... Millions of dollars are lost every Year by Clubs, Bars, Lounges, Sports Bars,
who are so set in their thinking, they never see the clarity or the reality
of what they are doing that is not generating cash flow, to what they should
be presenting, that would create a cash cow. ..."

“… I think that there is another even more vicious twist to Harrison’s python. It is one which operates from the very basic survival logic of the child. We may imagine that the child has to work out an answer to the difficult question: “If they love me, why did they send me away?”

The Logic of Survival in a Lunatic World
A review by Robert Brustein

"...It's better to die on one's feet than live on one's knees," Nately retorted with triumphant and lofty conviction. "I guess you've heard that saying before." "Yes, I certainly have," mused the treacherous old man, smiling again. "But I'm afraid you have it backward. It is better to live on one's feet than die on one's knees. That is the way the saying goes." - Catch-22
Like all superlative works of comedy - and I am ready to argue that this is one of the most bitterly funny works in the language - Catch-22 is based on an unconventional but utterly convincing internal logic.
