French term

artisan industriel

French to English Bus/Financial Manufacturing
"artisan industriel" is how my client (a leading producer of specialist equipment for industry) describes his business as it was a few years ago - the point he is making is that he has rapidly grown from being a small business producing bespoke kit, to a modern manufacturer of mass-produced equipment:
"Depuis quelques années le métier de xxxxxx a beaucoup évolué, d’artisan industriel, il est devenu fabricant d’appareils en série..."
Can anybody suggest something better than my "small-scale producer", of which I'm not very proud?
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): writeaway, mchd

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

rkillings Jun 23, 2009:
From your description, it sounds exactly like a craft producer! One that employs "HVAC craftsmen" (q.v.) to produce "custom-crafted" (q.v.) installations, each a one-off. Now it's making multiples on a (literal or figurative) assembly line, as an industrial producer.
HVAC is dominated by craft producers, many of which have "craft" in their name. Try a search on HVAC + craft + company.
Michael GREEN (asker) Jun 23, 2009:
The key word is "industriel" We are talking about a small industrial company that has expanded rapidly - it's not a craft industry (air-conditioning & cooling, but I don't see that as relevant).
So I think "craft" should be avoided in any suggested translation. I briefly thought of "craft industry" and immediately rejected it.
The reason I posted the question, apart from my own need to find a better solution than my own, if possible, was to generate some debate on uses of this word "artisan/artisanal", which is always a bugbear for translators.
Rachel Fell Jun 22, 2009:
Hmm- maybe depends a bit on what type of craft/industry is involved, but maybe you can't say?
MatthewLaSon Jun 22, 2009:
Small-scale is what I meant. I would have failed a translation test over that. LOL.

Note from asker:
Thank you - I imagine "small-scare" was a typo for "small-scale" ? Even at his current size, my customer doesn't frighten me ;o)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you all for your contributions and comments. Ideally, points should be shared - although my final choice for my text was "small-scale manufacturer", I would have liked to include Bourth's idea of "bespoke", but "small-scale bespoke manufacturer" would have been too cumbersome for my context. However I will add it in that form to the glossary."

craft producer

As opposed to production-line manufacturer.

Leave 'industrial' out of it altogether; it doesn't help. Presumably, what makes the artisan 'industriel' in the first place is vaguely different from what makes the manufacturer 'industrialisé'.

I was thinking "industrial craftsman", but that appears to be a craftsman who works in industry:

Hi Michael, This might work in the context of your text. It covers the artisanal side whilst still being clear that this relates to industrial equipment. Still it does infer that he was a one man show, so I'm not sure.
