French term

Il se doit donc de s'y conformer

French to English Social Sciences Religion Islam
Ainsi, disaient-ils, le bien n'est pas une affaire de convention, il existe objectivement. Or Dieu est juste. Il se doit donc de s'y conformer. Il est tenu à une éthique qui ne dépend pas de son bon vouloir.

This little paragraph is about the religious views of Mutazilite Muslims. I'm having real difficulty with the last two sentences. Please could someone help? Thanks

There are two sentences before: Les mutazilites revendiquaient quelques idées-forces, dont la plus fameuse était le principle de l’absolue justice divine. Ils étaient en outre rationalistes en matière d’éthique.

... de son bon vouloir is the end of the paragraph

agree suezen : yes, this fits in with the idea that God does not decide what's good or bad and does not intercede en.wikibooks.org/wiki/History_of_Islam/ The_Mutazilites-Asharites_debate - 26k

He must thus conform to it. He is subject to an ethic that does not arise from his own good will.

I'm sending the two last sentences, since you're asking for help with both. I like the more literal translation of 'conform' because it goes with the idea expressed here that God is bending to another power, that of the objective idea of good.
