Another thing: I think the speaker is being a bit ironic or sarcastic with his/her extended list of side dishes! :o)
Amy Duncan (X) Nov 3, 2006:
This isn't a note to you Michael, but just a general comment to reiterate that "maionese" DOES have to do with potatoes in Portuguese, since it means "potato salad," and not just "mayonnaise" as in English. This is especially for Marina.

thanks Denise
disagree muitoprazer (X) : not mashed-simply cold,or diced-better just potato salad//potato mash and potato puree not the samething-former done with fork or masher, latter with maschine.salad impliespresence of more than one vegetable/herb

of course it's mashed, that's why it's "puré" and not just "maionese", please don't comment if you don't know what you're talking about
agree Fernando Domeniconi : Faz sentido...

thanks Amy, let us know how it turns out ;)
disagree marina hennies : disagree, it doesn't mention potatoes

in Brazil "maionese" is also the name for potato salad (as well as the name for mayonnaise itself!)
agree sarahjeanne (X) : the recipe you have linked makes sense. i asked around here, nobody has ever heard of pure de maionese; maybe it's portuguese? i also only had one hit for the portuguese term, so maybe it's not the common name or it's just not a common dish.

thanks, i think it's basically like mashed potato but with mayo instead of milk. Wow, so much debate about a potato salad! Who'd have thought it? :)

mayonnaise purée

Pu·rée
n.

Mayonnaise

Peer comment(s):

disagree Ben Kohn : Sorry Teresa, but that wouldn't make sense in English, as we don't use the word mayonnaise to mean potato salad, as Brazilian portuguese does

I understand, Ben. It was a wild guess ;)
agree muitoprazer (X) : if you put potato in front, yes !
