white rice Explanation: This is a specific kind of white rice used in Portugal, in fact it's the most popular rice in Portugal but in English it's basically just regular white rice as far as I'm aware. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 mins (2009-11-27 13:36:16 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "1.variedade de arroz de grãos pequenos, com teor inferior de amilose; nome científico" Short grain white rice then maybe? http://pt.wiktionary.org/wiki/arroz_carolino -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 mins (2009-11-27 13:41:46 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I have a bag of this in my cupboard-"Saludães Arroz Carolino". On the side of the bag it says "Arroz Extra Longo Branqueado". It isn't sticky or asian rice. It's white rice. Perhaps long grain according to my bag. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 mins (2009-11-27 13:45:11 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Arroz Carolino Saludães "É uma das variedades mais consumidas em Portugal, em grande parte devido á cultura gastronómica do nosso país. Trata-se de um grão pequeno e redondo que, dadas as suas propriedades, apresenta uma textura cremosa depois da cozedura. Absorve muito bem o sabor dos condimentos que o acompanham." Please see this link- http://www.saludaes.pt/seccion/familias#bas_clas Asian rice is a different sort of rice("Arroz Oriente" on that same page). This rice becomes creamy when cooked and absorbs flavours well. But it is not sticky rice, which is an asian variety. Hope this helps. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 28 mins (2009-11-27 13:58:42 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Or actually you could leave it as "carolino white rice": http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/Portugal/South/Setub... http://www.scielo.oces.mctes.pt/scielo.php?pid=S0873-7444200... http://www.cotecportugal.pt/index.php?option=com_content&tas... |
