That is quite true. The meaning is the same, the usage slightly different. What I meant by my remark above is that this crest or coat of arms or blazon belongs to the family and can appear on a wine.

A lot of people get confused on the difference between a Coat of Arms and a Family Crest. They really are the same thing. However, if you want to get technical, COAT OF ARMS is the more correct term. A CREST is actually a “PORTION” of the Coat of Arms. It is the part of the coat of arms that usually shows up above the helmet. However, when people talk about a FAMILY CREST, they are usually reffering to the whole COAT OF ARMS.

So, a CREST is just a portion of the arms, but a FAMILY CREST or a COAT OF ARMS are usually used to describe the same thin.

Family crests are used in a lot of different circumstances. Your context will give you more clues than we have from the half sentence you have posted. Perhaps if you could give us more information about your text we might be able to offer something more useful. yes, now I understand... I've just seen what you mean in one article about wines. That is true. But even though this is about wines, in this part, the description is talking about the Morgadio and the family.

yes, but then wouldn't it have to do with the explanation given in that article, relating to the actual crest of the "design" of the coat of arms?

Of course the most direct translatoin of brasão is blazon in English, but from my understanding of heraldry, these terms are used slightly differently in different European traditions. My suggestion of family crest comes from its wide usage in the wine industry.

Well, I've googled both terms, and the images provided are basically the same... Does anyone have a reference to the difference between "coat of arms" and "family crest"?

I think that family crests, as these are often known, are often awarded by charter, and this could be the "Carta" in your text. Especially as family crests are frequently used in wine labels.
