dead wood

I am offering this only as an alternative to consider. My first instinct was also "deadwood." However, I checked with alternative Google searches, using "dead "wood" with "forests" and "deadwood" with "forests." Both usages appear, with "dead wood" seemingly favored slightly in silviculture references. See the example sentences and references below for this usage.

I think we might need a silviculture specialist translator to resolve this one -- I could go either way.
Example sentence:

Dead wood is increasingly being regarded as a major component and useful indicator of biodiversity in forests[.]

Studies in temperate forests in North America and elsewhere suggest that in a healthy, wild forest dead wood can comprise as much as 30% of the overall woody biomass.
