I am English and have been studying Portuguese since 1998. I have lived in Brazil for extended periods, having residency through marrying a Brazilian paediatrician in April 2001. I am fluent in Portuguese and have spoken on health and human rights at conferences and other events in Brazil.

I have broad experience in translating from Portuguese to English and specialise in technical, business and legal translations. I sat the Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation examinations (Portuguese -> English) in January 2011 as part of my process of continuing development. This is a Level 7 (postgraduate level) qualification in the UK framework.

I was accepted as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL) in June 2011 and have since been accepted as a Chartered Linguist. English is my mother tongue. 

I am a qualified proofreader and editor. I gained a Level 4 diploma, with grade "Distinction", from the College of Media and Publishing in July 2018.

I passed the examination for the SDL Machine Translation Post-Editing Certificate in April 2020.

I use Trados Studio translation software and am experienced with Across, MemoQ, Memsource, Translation Workspace and other CAT tools.

My degrees (B.Sc., M.Eng.) are in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath. I have worked in the aviation and car industries and also qualified as a private pilot. In more recent years I have been working in the area of health and human rights and am a published author in this field. 

As part of my Continuing Professional Development, I have taken the courses listed here on Proz.com and regularly take additional courses. In 2020, I passed the Harvard University online course - Contract Law: From Trust to Promise to Contract.

I qualified in subtitling and close captions, and trained on Ooona subtitling software.
