Does anybody have similar problems / possible fixes?

The error explanation goes on about "System.NullReferenceException" in the Source "Sdl.Desktop.Flatform.WinForms".

Is it possible to reverse the upgrade? Fortuately I can work on my laptop (not yet upgraded ) but this is not an from ideal solution.

Thanks and regards,

Possible solution Jul 23, 2012

Hi Michael,

I had a similar glitch on one of my computers with the SP2 update, albeit not mid-project.

You could try uninstalling (deactivate the licence first) and reinstalling Studio SP2. This worked for me (YMMV, of course, but I hope it doesn't!). I didn't uninstall MultiTerm SP2 as it had installed without any problem.

All the best,

Giles

In case you cannot see the "AppData" folder, make sure that your folder view is set to "display hidden system folders." Here are step-by-step instructions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Show-hidden-files.

This may help. If not let us know.

Now working - reloaded Studio and deleted the files as suggested Jul 23, 2012

Excellent! Many thanks to you both!

I removed SP2 (left Multiterm in place) and deleted the files as suggested by Paul. There was no need to deactivate the licence as I was reinstalling on the same computer.

Then to be on the safe side I rebooted the computer before launching Studio Sp2.

Everything now working as previously.

Regards,

Michael

I am experiencing exactly the same problem Sep 21, 2012

I'm getting this tedious error message aswell, and I can't save the translated segments. I tried following all the steps indicated above, but to no avail. Could it have anything to do with the fact that I have just loaded some widows updates? Could there be some incompatibility issue with windows updates?

Object reference errors with SP2 Sep 22, 2012

Hi Roger,

This is a very generic error message but there is a KB article here that might help though and it covers a few scenarios in which this may occur: http://goo.gl/SbchC

Could the fact that more than half of the segments are left untranslated anything to do with this?

I have tried deleting the three evil .xml files, have deleted .exd files from my hard disc like proposed in another thread, have done a repair install of Studio 2011 and restarted my computer. By now, I should be in bed and getting some rest for a long, long day tomorrow. But I need to deliver this wretched ttx file tomorrow and I can't, because the object refernce is not set to an instance of an object. Now, if it was because an asteroid has crashed into the earth, I could understand that. But this?

Please help. What else can I try?

Kind regards

How did you solve your problem? I'm myself going slighlty mad. I've spend hours on the internet trying to find a solution to my TRADOS problems. I deleted the three .xml files, the .exd file, run the Command Prompt, but nothing has helped so far. I'm not that interested in becoming an IT specialist. I'm so, so sorry for wasting my time and money on TRADOS.

I wouldn't have thought leaving half the file untranslated would make any difference. What about making a copy of the original file, renaming it preparing it in Studio then cleaning it to create a "translated version" without having done anything?

I did have a similar problem again and just did a reinstall of studio without deleting the xml files. This didn't work.

I had to repeat the whole procedure having first deleted the xml files. In my particular case it was because my antivirus software was scheduled (automatically) to run a scan at 3 a.m. I inadvertently left my computer in sleep mode. It then seems to have come out of sleep mode and tried to run the scan. In some way this shut down the computer and scrambled the xml files. I only know because before I deleted them I looked at the time they were last modified.

In your case as an emergency workaround could you not export the TM to a tmx file and then import this in Trados/TagEditor and then process the files in TagEditor. Most of the work you have done should import altough you will probably have to muck about a bit with the tags...

Lastly sometimes too if there is a reference to a tag in a particular translation unit it is worth checking that translation unit as once I hadn't copied the tags correctly and that messed things up.

Michael

Fingers crossed. I ageee with your sentiments though, you shouldn't have to be an IT expert just to use Studio...

SDLXLIFF To Legacy Converter Oct 9, 2012

I had already downloaded this Add-On (SDLXLIFF To Legacy Converter) to be able to make a partial wordcount of the file. The same Add-On could also turned my file back into TTX.

I still have no idea how to solve this problem in Studio 2011 alone - I do have TagEditor still, but exporting TMs and trying to retranslate in TagEditor is messy many times. Very annoying. Next time I will try to open a new version of the file and see if that helps.

And then I received a file to proofread and this time the review function drives me mad - it eats up all my 2GB of memory within one hour and then blocks everything with a nice collection of error messages (how does enough memory remain to generate all those error messages, I wonder?) I have been restarting my computer regularly every hour to be able to finish reviewing the file.

Exhausted regards,
Anna

Hi Anna,

You said you wanted to make a partial wordcount and this is why you created the TTX. After you did this why would you translate this partial file at all unless you wanted to then update your original sdlxliff with the contents afterwards?

Anyway, if you do wish to translate it the process should be this with the Legacy Converter:

1. Export to TTX
2. Translate the TTX (in whatever tool you like)
3. Import the TTX back into Studio using the Legacy Converter

That's it. The Legacy Converter does not turn your sdlxliff into anything. It creates an additional file with the content you wish to extract from the sdlxliff.

Perhaps you can clarify the process you went through and also confirm what your aim is? Sorry for the questions but I don't understand what you are trying to do.

Regards

Paul

Not the problem anymore? Oct 10, 2012

Like I said - the problem of not being able to turn the sdlxliff back into the original ttx has been solved, anyway just for the understanding:

1. Client sends me a ttx file he wants me to translate partially. I translate this file with Studio 2011.

2. I suspect the wordcount is wrong, so I want to filter out the untranslated segments and count only the translated segments.

3. I use SDLXLIFF To Legacy Converter to export only translated segments to a ttx fi

4. I want to turn the first, partially translated file back into ttx. Studio goes on strike.

5. I use SDLXLIFF To Legacy Converter to turn the file into ttx.

Worked perfectly.

So, no there is no problem anymore. I don't know what happened. I have been working with other files since, a ttx as well, and Studio has turned them back into the original format without any problems. Hope it remains that way.

Kind regards
Anna

Latest update / take on this Nov 26, 2012

My latest take on this:

if my computer shuts down incorrectly: power cut, I accidently click the wrong button, antivirus software decides to update without warning me...

The files mentioned by Paul:

- BaseSettings.xml
- plugincache.xml
- UserSettings.xml

Are somehow scrambled. (You can check this by looking at the last date/time they were changed - it always coincides with the time at which the disaster struck).

I have found that it is not necessary to reinstall Studio, just to delete these three files.

Studio then restarts OK. The only drawback is, if you have customized your Studio settings (moved windows around, set verification checkings, etc.) these will be lost and you will have to "recreate" your interface.

I am now keeping a back of the three files in another folder!

URGENT. I'm stuck on STUDIO 2011. Feb 10, 2013

I 've tried everything already:
- Delete the three .xml files (but they weren't automatically recreated as you said they should, instead I got many other different files in this folder...)
- Tried from SDL Trados View > Reset Window Layout
- Deactivate License. Unistall and reinstall Trados and Multiterm, but it didn't work either.
- Create a new project with the files to be translated, but the same messages appear anyway.

The thing is I can't do anything else, not even close the wizard for SDL Trados 2011. I rebooted my computer plenty of times, but nothing works. I can't even start translating another file on the project and leave this...

Please if someone could help me!! I am quite desperate!
