I received this mail yesterday:

"Dear sir

We need to translate some documents from Norwegian into
English. Are you able to do that? If you accept, I will send
you the documents. We need the translation urgently. We just
need to have on the bottom of the translation your
credentials as the translations is needed for the purposes
of court proceedings and we need to have it 'certified'.

There was no other information. When I asked for more details, both about the company and the project, I received this:

"Dear Sir,

My name is Ms XXXX XX.XXXX and I am managing a team of translators.

Our team is working for more than 2 years and our customers are (directly or indirectly):
FLS, Microsoft, Karcher, SAP, Bramidan, SportingBet, Samsung, Autodesk, HP, Fujifilm, Grecon, NATO, MAN, Honda, SABIC, Monster, etc.

We invite you to join our team to participate in the current and long-term translation projects.
Now we have the following vacancies (all work is done remotely)
Translator from Norwegian into English and vice versa.

I need the project on Monday evening. but it's important to the client to be certified and to put the stamp !

Awaiting your response .

Here is one example file of the project.

I declined the job. An impressive list of clients did not really do it for me. The document was from 2012, an e-mail correspondence, which looked like it was a copy of a copy.

Fits my rule that all e-mails that start out saying "My name is X" are scams.

Also "company" e-mails that are signed with first names only are most likely scams.
And no contact details? Real companies always have plenty of contact details.

Further indicators: bad punctuation and "plz".

I agree with Joakim.

Something 'impressive' is another clear scam indicator.

So is the lack of an identifiable company. Strange that he took the time to list so many companies but not his own which is what you asked for.

And so is putting pressure on you with an urgent requirement (so you forget to think), although many legitimate agencies often need urgent translations.

I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole.

I asked myself what kind of a scam this could be, and I wonder if he (or she?) simply wanted a certification and stamp (to be used as he sees fit). Apparently that was very important.

Underscoring the importance of a certification and court proceedings make it sound more 'official' and 'impressive'. That's a typical scammer method.

If it were a well-known, identified company with a decent Blue Board record, it would obviously not be a problem, but since we have no idea who this is, the scam elements need to be taken seriously.

Considering the emails I received over the last two years, I would say that any request talking about an urgent job WITHOUT:
1. asking for "your BEST rate";
2. mentioning a reason why they can't pay more than $0.06 "this time";
3. promising more volume and regular work in the future; and
4. specifying a 45 days (or more) end month payment
has to be looked as suspicious!

This 3-step program will protect you from most scams:
  1. When contacted by an unknown entity with a business proposal you should first ask yourself if this deserves further evaluation, otherwise delete immediately.

  2. If you move beyond that point, the next step is getting verifiable contact information and verify it. If you can't be sure of the other part's identity (especially if the urgency of the matter makes identification impossible) then delete immediately. ... See more
