I don't really have to, as a little dot lights up at the top of my screen whenever an e-mail comes into my work account. I check my backup mail accounts maybe 3 or 4 times a day, as well as my spam folders, just in case any important mail has been classed as spam, which sometimes happens.

I have two primary e-mails and the main one is connected to my mobile so I know if a new message has come. I check it every hour or so, depending on my schedule. I don’t leave the program open on my computer because I find it disturbs my work.

In an earlier version of Windows a little sign used to glide up and down in the bottom corner of the screen, and I could see the sender's name. It only distracted me if there was a red flag - I learned to ignore KudoZ and newsletters until I had time.
Now I see a little yellow envelope, but unless I am waiting for a specific mail, I ignore it until I take a break. There should always be an Other option in these polls. I receive a notification on my desktop for important emails and Outlook makes a sound if an email arrives from one of my clients.

New emails received in Outlook are clearly and visually indicated in Windows Notifications. ADSL 50-powered Outlook is usually open anyway, even if we do not always look at it, for lack of time. There is also a visual notification system running on my mobile which indicates incoming Push email. These are somewhat annoying in the eyes and ears of others - cannot be helped.
We do not filter email but I do check our spam filters 1.5 times a day. We do not use webmail for business purposes unless we are having technical problems with Outlook, which rarely happens.
However, I would like to say that having noticed the subject line and sender plus possibly having glanced at the first line is not the same as having read the email and come up with a suitable, efficient reply fully adapted to the circumstances in your head plus having typed it. So "checking" (...) email every X minutes does not necessarily result in near-instant responses.
Actually, clearly being one of the faster communicators in the industry out there I prefer customers who do not insist on near-instant responses. Also, some emails take half an hour or so to arrive so ...

I don't need to check my emails, as I have a notification on my phone whenever I receive one. However I check them every morning, of course.
I have set direct access to my email box on my phone, and I have even set a simplified version of my email signature in order to always look professional, even when I'm afk.

All my accounts are connected to my phone, so I do not need to check anything, I'm notified at once.
However I do need to check my email account on the computer, as spam e-mails, sometimes important, aren't visible on my phone.

I installed and configured MS Outlook to read all my emails and store them in the respective folders. I rarely ever access email servers with my navigator. or in my cell phone. I learned how important it is to archive and have access to old emails when I had to sue a client who didn't pay me. If you use the navigator or the cell phone for this purpose, you'll have a very hard time with this, if it's possible at all.

This way, I don't have hundreds of old emails in my inbox, like many people do. The only emails in my inboxes are the ones with some kind of pending issue or the unfinished jobs. All others are archived.
Therefore, my Outlook is open 24/7, and I receive/read emails constantly, as long as I'm awake, and that was my answer to the poll.

It depends on whether I am working on a literary project or not. I check it much more frequently (every half hour or so, even after less time) if I'm not. No hard and fast rule, in my case.
