First of all, not all my email messages are in English. In general, I tend to use the same sign-off as the person who emailed me, but with clients it depends: some are more formal than others, though I do like “Warm regards”…

The large majority of my emails are not in English - mostly German, sometimes Catalan and other times Spanish or French

Saying goodbue in an email Aug 20, 2022

Ususally best regards, but if this is part of the thread I'll just end with "Best," and then my first name under it.

In Portuguese I use "Atenciosamente" or "Att" in more formal/professional settings, and "Abs" (abraços - hugs) when familiar with the recipient. In EN I like to go with "Best" or "Best regards". Subliminal conditioning ; )

... regards. But I don't think of it as "saying goodbye", as I'm usually hoping to hear from the recipient again.

(Note to ProZ staff: the correct term is "closing salutation".)

Best/Kind - depending Aug 21, 2022

For the first email, in response to en enquiry actually addressing me by name (I don't reply to those that start "Dear Linguist"), it will be Best regards.

When the working relationship has been established, it will be Kind regards.

Dear Linguist Aug 21, 2022

'Dear Linguist' is one of my pet peeves. The other is 'Dear' (without any name or title, and without the comma) - and the classic peanuts signals like 'We are on a limited budget' and 'Give us your best rate'.
Regarding closing salutations, I also go for Atenciosamente (PT) and (Best) Regards (ENUK) but if they call me 'Mr Dixon' as opposed to Paul, I still use Yours faithfully/sincerely in certain cases.

Best wishes, Aug 21, 2022

I use "Best wishes" and although I have been changing to "Regards", I still prefer the former. Seems more human and straighforward. Do I regard the person or organisation I am writing to highly? Probably not. Am I faithful or sincere? No, I'm just trying to get some money to buy food or more likely to pay to the landlord for his holidays at the beach. On the other hand, do I wish the best, even for people I hate a little? Yes, I think so.
