It’s been hard recently to avoid all the cheat chat around AI technology in translation. Ever since ChatGPT made its way into the professional domain, people have been turning to machine learning and artificial intelligence for everything from social media posts to creating award-winning art! Anyway, our profession will change with AI and LLM as it changed many times over the centuries. Human translation and editing will always be necessary not only to catch mistakes (such as a gender mismatch or the incorrect translation of an ambiguous expression), but also to add an element of localization. I'm curious, scared, doubtful and excited at the same time.
On the one hand I'm under the impression that a lot of effort is being put into making us (people in general) believe that AI is already so good that it will (so to speak) replace us soon. I think that's more of a hype than reality.
On the other hand I keep being impressed about what DeepL is able to produce if you use it in a smart way, meaning using it with the auto-suggest function and the dictionary feature... See more I'm curious, scared, doubtful and excited at the same time.

On the other hand I keep being impressed about what DeepL is able to produce if you use it in a smart way, meaning using it with the auto-suggest function and the dictionary feature (telling the bot how to translate specific terminology or word groups consistently).
Of course I'm talking about non-creative texts, but one worry does come to my mind about creative texts and ChatGPT, although it doesn't really concern me because I hardly translate any creative texts : apparently ChatGPT is able to make texts sound very fluently, so wouldn't that be a big threat for translators of creative texts ? You basically could produce a correct but moderate quality translation and let ChatGPT do the rest. Just a thought, I might be oversymplifying things (I didn't test it myself).
All this ChatGPT business also generates the most peculiar requests from clients. Yesterday I was asked to translate a ChatGPT prompt. I was supposed to translate it, adapt it to a style guide delivered by the end client and finally enter it into ChatGPT to verify if the prompt resulted into the desired answer. If not I was supposed to adapt the prompt until the answer was satisfying. I refused the job.

AI can be interesting, although I'm concerned about job losses it may lead to across the board, not just in translation.
I don't know what LLM is yet and I'm too busy actually working (although I'm supposed to be on holiday, but my best client needs an urgent thing doing by Monday) to be bothered looking it up.
My favourite AI is the Old McDonald's version: Ai AI O...

AI learns from human teacher(s) at first. Translators as human can learn from and teach one another. What I am most worried about is the time when the developed AIs will educate one another, not like what I am doing (just working all by myself).

Mostly curiosity, leavened with interest and mild apprehension - not about what some evil artificial intelligence will do to us, but more about what nasty uses human beings might dream up for it.
As for people who post poll discussion topics containing quite unnecessary abbreviations, some of which may not be familiar to everyone, just to show how clever and up to date they are - well, my feelings about them are less ambiguous.

AI and LLM can be helpful, provided that the security measures are tight and strictly observed by everyone. But we all know that this is not and will never be the case. Therefore, I have decided for myself to stay clear of them as much as possible.

LL.M. - thought it was Master of Laws, but I guess I am mistaken.
All joking aside, however; AI can be a tool, but as I mentioned recently in a Facebook post, I believe it was Shazam (if you're familiar with the app for iPhone and Android systems) which came out with a novel "introduction" of AI 10 years ago (I don't know if it was actually 10 years ago; it could have been more than that).
Technology, big business, and finance will always threaten people's jobs, in my opinion.
The key is to adapt. I think. At least in the world of work.

but Moderately Concerned would be a better option.
Not so much for me personally, at my age I do not envision that AI and LLM are going to snatch my work away in my lifetime.
I am more concerned about the world in general, especially since it is unrealistic to expect that everyone is going to adhere to any new regulations or ethical rules.
