Dear all! Can any of you tell me by furnishing some example sentences the difference between "dismantle" and "dismount". To me they always used to be synonyms:))) What about machinery? In EN we associate dismounting with horses, typically:-) Dismounting is generally about "getting off" something, dismantle is about "taking apart". | |

You could for example dismount a machine part from its support, or dismount wheels from an axle. Dismantling something means not just removing what kept it standing up, but taking it apart completely. You can quite vividly imagine a medieval knight dismounting from his horse. Good catch on the IT issue, since I usually "unmount" a disk drive or data partition, when I want to take away from a running computer, but not dismantle it. But that's jargon, eh. | |
