Suggestion for improving Kudoz questions and glossaries Thread poster: María Luisa Feely

Dear Colleagues, Ever since I found proz.com I have used the Kudoz section a lot, both for asking questions and for looking up terms in the glossaries. In time, I realized that sometimes it takes me a lot of time to find what I am looking for because sometimes the same word can function in different ways (as a noun, adjective, adverb, verb). See more Dear Colleagues, Ever since I found proz.com I have used the Kudoz section a lot, both for asking questions and for looking up terms in the glossaries. In time, I realized that sometimes it takes me a lot of time to find what I am looking for because sometimes the same word can function in different ways (as a noun, adjective, adverb, verb). So, it occurred to me it would be a good idea to add a "type of word" as a new field in the "ask question" form, as this would make it easier to look for terms stored in the glossaries. (Basically, the options should include different types of words and also a "phrase" option). I have submitted this idea through the "ideas" button on the top right corner of the site. If you also think it is a good idea, I would appreciate very much if you can visit this link (http://proz.uservoice.com/forums/37454-kudoz/suggestions/957303-add-a-type-of-word-field-in-the-ask-question-?ref=title) and vote for it. Maybe, if we are lucky, Proz.com staff will implement it. Thanks in advance for your comments! ▲ Collapse | | | Yolanda Broad United States Local time: 03:48 Member (2000) French to English + ... Hello Eileen, Thank you for raising the issue. The KudoZ section is ProZ's crown jewel. Dotting the i's by adding further classification criteria (especially such basic criteria as syntactic functions), can only increase its worth. I would be happy if nouns got entered in the nominative, and verbs in the infinitive

[Edited at 2010-08-03 19:31 GMT] I completely agree with you here, especially with regard to the ability to download one's own personal glossaries. I would really love to see that function enabled! I would also say that there's some room for improvement as far as the editing workflow for personal glossaries is concerned. I can't give any concrete suggestions on how to improve this right now because I'm not familiar enough with the possible options, but I find it a bit cumbersome, there's too much clicking involved IMHO. And finally, there could be more display options (namely, the option to display the "Definition" field). | | | Small is beautiful for our Kudoz section? | Aug 4, 2010 |
Trudy Peters wrote: I would be happy if nouns got entered in the nominative, and verbs in the infinitive IMHO, Kudoz should be different from general dictionaries, glossaries, encyclopedia or Termbase. The reason is that, Kudoz words are mainly discussions about specific or particular use of a term, not the entire usage system. Kudoz scores are also selected subjectively as desired by the asker. Type of words are usually understood out of example of usage e.g. verb, conjunction. I do not imagine that Kudoz section includes many grammatic jargons that are not easily read by non-linguists. I expect a brief, concise and self-fulfilled contents of the Kudoz. Regards, Soonthon L. | | | Henry Hinds United States Local time: 01:48 English to Spanish + ... In memoriam
I agree with Soonthon, as far as I can understand, that words need to be understood totally within the CONTEXT INVOLVED, and even though it might be a bit tedious to examine many possibilities, so be it. If you are looking for a solution, then check it out, ALL of it. Period. | | | David Wright Austria Local time: 09:48 German to English + ... Other suggestion | Aug 4, 2010 |
I would be happy if I did not have to set my language pairs each time (despite clicking on "search and save setting" - the purpose of which I have yet to understand). Whenever I enter a term in "search for translation" I get all possible language combinations and have to set my own pairs again (which it then retains as long as I don't leave this area of ProZ).

Yes, as a selectable option | Aug 4, 2010 |
Sometimes we find the search word "disguised" as a different part of speech, or part of an expression and that can be very useful. A search within a limited category is useful only if it is a selectable option. On the other hand, I find the Advanced Search that lists all the possible fields a waste of time - if it works at all. I think the Advanced Search should be changed to include only the main fields and, of course - search according to parts of speech. FWIW. ...
