The spellcheck dictionary on my old computer has hundreds or even thousands of scientific terms which I checked and then added to the dictionary in their day so that they were no longer underlined in red and I knew they were correct and didn't need checking.

Now I've moved to a new computer which obviously doesn't have these in the dictionary and I'm having to check terms which I know are already in my old dictionary. Is there any way to copy my old dictionary (it's just the Micr

Is there any way to copy my old dictionary (it's just the Microsoft dictionary) and install it on my new computer? Explained in words of one syllable please, as I'm not a computer expert by any means.

My old computer has Windows 7 (home), 34 bits, and my new one has Windows 7 (professional), 64 bits, and both have Microsoft Office 2007 installed.

Thanks for any help.

How to copy your custom dictionary Oct 15, 2012

You can browse to your custom dic in Word.
Options>proofing>Custom dictionaries
Then go to edit and copy and paste all the entries from your old machine to your new one.

Or, you could copy the whole file. Your custom dictionary should be here:
C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\UProof
It's called custom.dic
Just copy the file and paste it into the same location on your new machine.

I've got Office 2010, so the instructions might differ slightly for 2007.

Thank you Emma Oct 15, 2012

That is so helpful. It's great to have my old dictionary back, which knows that 'chitosan', for example, is a word!

This is a file which is good to keep somewhere in a safe place, especially that it hasn't changed much since the early days of MS Office - the name is the same (custom.dic) and it's a simple little text file that you can modify using notepad.
I've carried my custom.dic file around with me since the beginning of the century, I think! It probably holds a few thousand words by now.

To simplify Emma's instructions, use file search in Windows Explorer to locate the file, then simply replace it with your copy.
