Discussion

JaneD May 19, 2012:
Nearly - it's not that the existing functions will work in the way they did in the old version, it's that they will *not* work in the way they did in the old version!
veratek (asker) May 19, 2012:
I think what they were trying to say is that they need to check that the new changes aren't going to make old (existing) functions "malfunction" (i.e., function in some old version way) -- this is why they are talking about "regresser" -- it's my only guess at this point.

regression testing of existing functionality

In the software testing profession this type of testing is almost exclusively referred to as 'regression testing' rather than 'non-regression', although its purpose is indeed to ensure the non-regression of functionality that was already present before the latest round of modifications.

There's a very useful glossary of testing terms available from the ISTQB site - see link.

ensuring that previously existing features continue to function correctly

As we all know, the problem with updating software is that adding new features tends to mean that existing ones stop working! That's what this is about.

non régression in computing context defined

i.e. non-regression testing

"Non-regression testing (NRT) is an approach to software testing. The purpose of non-regression testing is to verify whether, after introducing or updating a given software application, previous software functions have not been compromised. The goal is to prevent software regression, whereby adding new features results in software bugs."
