Source text - German Möglichkeiten der Eingrenzung und Sortierung über Schlagworte, Zitierungen und andere Metadaten bieten die großen Literatur- und Zitationsdatenbanken wie z. B. Scopus, Web of Science und PubMed. Sie stellen vielgenutzte und schnelle Werkzeuge zur Schlagwortsuche über Abermillionen Veröffentlichungen, vor allem Zeitschriftenartikel dar. Neue, globale und frei zugängliche Indizes entstehen, um zumindest Abstracts frei zugänglich recherchierbar zu machen. Ursprünglich auf Zeitschriftenartikel begrenzt und entsprechend engführend, enthalten die großen Datenbanken inzwischen auch zunehmend andere Publikationsformen so- wie zugehörige Informationen wie z. B. Klinische-Studien-Protokolle, Patente, Policy-Doku- mente, Datensätze oder Informationen zu Projektförderungen. Nicht in diesen Datenbanken eingeschlossene Publikationen anderer Formate sind damit häufig von geringerer Wahrnehm- barkeit. Abhilfe versprechen hier Suchmaschinen, die bewusst alle Publikationsarten einbe- ziehen (wie z. B. intendiert mit der nicht kommerziellen Suchmaschine BASE26). Grundsätzlich ist zu beachten, dass technische Rechercheinstrumente, ob allgemeine oder spezifische Suchmaschinen, in jedem Fall ihrerseits Auswirkungen auf die Sichtbarkeit publizierter Wis- senschaft haben. Translation - English The major literature and citation databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed offer options for filtering and sorting by keywords, citations and other metadata. They are widely used as fast tools for keyword searches covering millions and millions of publications, especially journal articles. New, global and freely accessible indices are emerging to enable free search at least of abstracts. Originally limited to journal articles and therefore narrow in scope, these large databases now increasingly contain other forms of publication, too, as well as related information such as clinical study protocols, patents, policy documents, data sets and details of project funding. As a result, publications in other formats that are not included in these databases often suffer from lower visibility. Search engines that deliberately include all types of publications (as is the intention of the non-commercial search engine BASE26, for instance) offer a remedy here. In principle, it should be noted that technical search tools, whether general or specific search engines, unquestionably have an impact on the visibility of published scholarship. Like all search engines, they generate a technically mediated interpre- tation of the available information resources (usually publications), thereby conveying “a certain image of the information world” (Lewandowski, 2020, p. 2)which is never without bias (Friedmann & Nissenbaum, 1996; Leyrer, 2021).

Source text - German Liebe Partner, Kundinnen und Förderer der Fraunhofer EMFT,
wir erleben gerade spannende Zeiten. Seit fast zwei Jahren sehen wir uns mit Herausforderungen konfrontiert, die wohl niemand von uns auf dem Radar hatte. Wir müssen schmerzlich erleben, wie unsere Abhängigkeit von internationalen Lieferketten unsere Wirtschaft – und eben auch unsere Forschung und Innovationskraft – ausbremst.
Wir sollten diese Erfahrungen zum Anlass nehmen, um eine längst fällige Weichenstellung vorzunehmen: Deutschland, Europa muss wieder unabhängiger werden. Das bedeutet zum einen, die Produktion von Chips und Halbleiterkomponenten wieder verstärkt in die eigene Hand zu nehmen. Es bedeutet aber auch, uns auf unsere Stärken zu besinnen: Unser Know-how in der Entwicklung von Mikroelektronik-Komponenten und Systemen für Zukunftsanwendungen wie Next Generation Computing, Quantentechnologien, Ressourceneffizienz und Bioökonomie.
Im Fokus der Entwicklungen stehen dabei die Aspekte Leistungsfähigkeit und Energieeffizienz von den Gesamtsystemen und der zugrundeliegenden Chips.
Daher stellt der Ausbau der System- und Schaltungstechnik eine wichtige zukünftige Säule für den Erfolg der Fraunhofer EMFT dar.
Im Bereich Circuit Design konnten wir sowohl unsere Expertise als auch unser Team im vergangenen Jahr stark aufbauen. Mit Prof. Amelie Hagelauer steht seit September 2021 zudem eine zweite Direktorin an der Spitze der Fraunhofer EMFT, die auf den Themengebieten der integrierten HF und analogen Schaltungstechnik eine beeindruckende Forschungsvita vorweisen kann.

These are certainly interesting times we’re going through right now.
For almost two years, we’ve had to face challenges that probably none of us could ever have foreseen. It has been a painful experience for us to see how dependence on international supply chains has slowed down our economy – and with it our capacity for research and innovation.
At this point, it is vital for us to take this as an opportunity to make strategic adjustments that are long overdue: Germany and Europe must become more independent again.
Firstly, this means doing more to take the production of chips and semiconductor components back into our own hands. But it also means reflecting on our strengths: our expertise in the development of microelectronic components and systems for future applications such as next generation computing, quantum technologies, resource efficiency and bioeconomy.
Here, developments will focus on the aspects of the performance capacity and energy efficiency of both the systems as a whole and the underlying chips.
As such, the expansion of systems and circuit technology will be a key future pillar for the success of Fraunhofer EMFT. In the area of Circuit Design, we were able to boost both our expertise and our team considerably last year. Fraunhofer EMFT has also had a second director at the helm since September 2021: Professor Amelie Hagelauer, who has an impressive track record in the areas of integrated RF and analog circuit technology.

After working for several years as a teacher and middle manager in education, partly in the UK but mostly in Germany, I became a full-time freelance translator in 2005.
