Source text - Spanish Después de pasar un tiempo en el jardín, fueron al refectorio para la comida. A continuación, los enfermeros condujeron a hombres y mujeres a una gigantesca sala con una multitud de cosas: mesas, sillas, sofás, un piano, un televisor y amplios ventanales, desde donde se podía ver el cielo ceniciento y las nubes bajas. Ninguno de los ventanales tenía rejas, porque daban al jardín. Las puertas estaban cerradas por el frío, pero bastaba girar el pomo para salir a caminar de nuevo entre los árboles.
La mayor parte se fue a ver la televisión. Otros miraban al vacío, algunos conversaban en voz baja consigo mismos, pero ¿quién no ha hecho esto en algún momento de su vida? Veronika advirtió que la mujer más anciana, Mari, estaba ahora con un grupo más grande en uno de los rincones de la gran sala. Algunos internos paseaban cerca y Veronika trató de juntárseles: quería escuchar lo que decían.
Procuró disimular lo más que pudo sus intenciones. Pero cuando se acercó, se callaron y, todos a la vez, la miraron.
-¿Qué es lo que usted desea? – le preguntó un señor mayor que parecía ser el líder de la Fraternidad (si es que realmente existía tal grupo y Zedka no estaba más loca de lo que parecía).
-Nada. Sólo pasaba.
Todos se miraron entre sí e hicieron algunos ademanes demenciales con la cabeza. Uno comentó con otro: “¡Ella sólo pasaba!”. Otro lo repitió en voz más baja y al poco tiempo todos comenzaron a gritar la misma frase.
Veronika no sabía qué hacer y quedó paralizada de miedo. Un enfermero, fornido y mal encarado, acudió a ver qué estaba ocurriendo.
-Nada- respondió uno del grupo-. Ella sólo pasaba. ¡Está parada allí, pero va a pasar!
El grupo entero rió a carcajada limpia. Veronika adoptó un aire irónico, sonrió, se dio media vuelta y se apartó, para que nadie notara que sus ojos se le henchían de lágrimas. Salió rápido al jardín, sin abrigarse. Un enfermero trató de convencerla de que regresara, pero en seguida apareció otro que le susurró algo, y ambos la dejaron en paz, en el frío. De nada servía cuidarle la salud a una persona condenada.
Translation - English After spending some time in the garden, they headed to the lunch room for their meal. Later, the nurses led the men and women to an enormous room with a wide variety of things: tables, chairs, sofas, a piano, a television set and wide windows, from which the gloomy skies and low-flying clouds could be seen. None of the windows had bars, because they led to the garden. The doors were closed because of the cold temperatures, but one only had to twist the doorknob to walk amongst the trees again.
Most of the people decided to watch television. Others looked at nothing, others talked to themselves in hushed tones, but who hasn’t done that at least once in their life? Veronika noticed that the oldest woman, Mari, was now with a large group in one of the corners of the room. Some of the members of the group walked close by, and Veronika tried to get closer to them: she wanted to hear what they were talking about.
She tried to be as discreet as she could about her intentions. Once she got closer, though, they all became quiet and, all at once, looked at her.
“What do you want?” asked an older man who was possibly the leader of the Brotherhood (if in fact such a group existed and Zedka wasn’t crazier than she seemed to be).
“Nothing. I was just passing by.”
They all looked at one another and made some demented gestures with their heads. Someone commented, “She was just passing by!” Another repeated the comment in a lower tone of voice, and soon everyone was shouting the same phrase.
Veronika didn’t know what to do and froze in fear. A nurse, heavy-set and with a sour expression, headed towards the group to ask what was going on.
“Nothing,” one of the group replied. “She was just passing by. She’s standing right there, but she’s gonna pass by!”
Everyone in the group started laughing out loud. Veronika took on an ironic demeanor, smiled, turned around and left so no one could see how her eyes were filling with tears. She quickly went to the garden, without putting on a coat. A nurse tried to convince her to return, but another appeared suddenly and whispered something to him, and both left her alone in the cold. There wasn’t much use to caring for the health of someone whose days were numbered.
