L’énergie solaire a un potentiel énorme. Il est la plus grande source d’énergie à la disposition de l’homme pour consommation et elle est illimitée ; si cette énergie est pleinement exploitée, elle pourrait largement subvenir aux besoins actuels en matière d’approvisionnement énergétique (Agence internationale de l’énergie, 2008). Les bases de la réflexion sur l’énergie solaire appliquée à l’espace remontent aux années 1970s lorsque des panneaux solaires ont été poses sur un satellite afin de canaliser les rayons solaires vers un récepteur sur terre et les convertir en électricité. Si les rayons solaires étaient captés dans le néant spatiale, ceci impliquerait que les panneaux solaires peuvent capter l’énergie intense du soleil sans pertes du fait de l’absorption atmosphérique. Lorsqu’un satellite est placé en orbite géostationnaire il peut être exposé à la lumière du soleil 24 heures par jour sans interruption en raison de la couverture nuageuse. La transmission des hyperfréquences allant jusqu’à 10 gigahertz peut traverser l’atmosphère épaisse de la terre avec un faible taux d’absorption permettant ainsi à une grande partie de cette énergie d’être capté et de se propager du capteur solaire dans l’espace vers le récepteur terrestre. Cependant, ces hyperfréquences tendent à se répandre lors de leur propagation, et donc des grands récepteurs seront nécessaires pour focaliser l’énergie captée à travers des longues distances. Par conséquent, les capteurs solaires en orbite géostationnaire nécessiteraient un récepteur à hyperfréquences sur terre ayant une taille des centaines de kilomètres carrés ; ce qui n’est pas pratique. Little (2011) a présenté un schéma de plateforme solaire appliquée à l’espace qui dans un premier temps transmet un rayon laser d’un satellite à capteur solaire à un autre satellite positionné à une vingtaine de kilomètres de la surface terrestre. Ce dernier doit être capable de transformer ce rayon laser en hyperfréquences et de transmettre cette énergie vers un récepteur terrestre.

Solar power has great potential. It is the largest energy source available to mankind for consumption on earth and is limitless; if utilised it could supply energy to mankind to meet many times the present demand (International Energy Agency, 2008). The basic idea of space-based solar power was first investigated in the 1970s, when solar panels were positioned on a satellite to beam the collected energy from the sun to a receiver on Earth to be converted into electricity. If the sunlight were collected in the vacuum of space it would indicate that the solar panels can harvest the sun’s intense energy without losses due to atmospheric absorption. When a satellite is placed in geostationary orbit it can be exposed to sunlight for 24 hours per day with no interruptions due to cloud cover. Microwave transmission at frequencies up to about 10 gigahertz can move through Earth’s thick atmosphere with little absorption, allowing most of the power collected to travel from the solar collector to the receiver on Earth. However, microwaves tend to spread out as they travel, so for great distances large receivers are required to capture the energy being beamed. Consequently, solar collectors at a geostationary orbit would require a microwave receiver on Earth to cover hundreds of square miles; this clearly is not a practicable option. Little (2011) has outlined a design for a space-based solar platform that first beams a laser from a solar-collecting satellite to another satellite positioned some 20 kilometres above the surface of the Earth. This satellite would be equipped to transform the laser to microwaves and would then beam that energy to a ground receiver.
