■ ■ ■ Introduction
To conclude the discussion of the toolbar tools in Flash, this chapter examines
the Text tool and issues related to it. Flash makes working with text
easier. Many of the concerns you must deal with when designing web
pages with raw HTML or even cascading style sheets are irrelevant.
However, there are still font issues you must be aware of and that you must
work around.
This chapter examines the three types of text objects you can create in
Flash. In general you create static text that does not change, and dynamic
or input text that can dynamically change during movie playback.
Although this chapter does not explore in detail all of the nitty-gritty things
you can do with ActionScript and a dynamic or input text field, you will
get a feel for how these text types work. The chapter concludes with a discussion
of specific font issues you should be aware of, as well as ways of
manipulating text in your movies.

■ ■ ■ Types of Text in Flash
As a quick overview, it would be helpful to understand the three different
types of text objects you can create in Flash. All three are created with the
Text tool, and you can easily change a text object back and forth between
the different types. The three types of text objects are as follows.
• Static text: A text object into which you enter content that does
not change. There are two types of static text objects: labels and
blocks. The primary difference between the two is that labels are
single-line elements, whereas blocks are multiline elements.
• Dynamic text: Text that changes based on something else in the
movie. For example, you could use ActionScripting to change the
content of a dynamic text field as something particular happens
in a movie.
• Input text: Like a dynamic text object, can change based on something
else in the movie. However, dynamic text fields cannot be
changed by the end user during playback, at least not directly.
Input text objects are unique in that the end user can click on and
change the text in an input text object during playback. Thus,
input text objects function like form fields in HTML, allowing the
end user to enter data at runtime.
Each of these text types is generated using the Text tool. Which type
of object you create is determined by a single drop-down list in the
Properties panel and the selection you make from it. The default is Static
text, but as you will see you can easily change this at will.
NOTE: Flash provides several standard text tools, such as a spell
checker and a find-and-replace feature.
■ ■ ■ Using the Text Tool
To create text you select the Text tool from the toolbar. All of the options
for the Text tool are displayed within the Properties panel. The following

sections detail the properties of the text tool, as well as how to enter and
edit text objects.
Properties of the Text Tool
Figure 5-1 shows the Properties panel as it relates to the Text tool. Note
that by default the Properties panel is partially collapsed. If you click on
the small white arrow in the lower left-hand corner of the Properties panel,
it will expand to show all of the option05-01s.tif related to the Text tool.
The options shown in the upper portion of Figure 5-1 control the general
text formatting properties. These are as follows.
• Text Type drop-down list: Determines what type of text object you
are going to create. Its options include Static Text, Dynamic Text,
and Input Text, as previously described.
• Font drop-down list: Sets the font face that will be used for the text
object. The items shown here are based on the currently installed
fonts on your system.
• Font Size field: Controls the size of the text within the text object,
measured in points.
• Text (fill) Color control: Defines the color of the text. Fill Color, not
Stroke Color, defines the color for text objects.
• Bold and Italic buttons: Allow you to style text as bold or italic.
• Justification buttons: Control the alignment of the entire block of
text. The flush left, flush right, and centered options for text produce
ragged edges on one or both (in the case of centering) sides
of the text block. The Justify button will make the text flush on
both sides.

• Edit Format (paragraph properties) button: Provides additional
paragraph formatting attributes, including indent, line spacing,
and left and right margins.
• Text Direction and Rotation buttons: These two options work
together. They permit you to change the definition of how text
“flows” within the field, which is specifically designed for representing
Asian text in Flash.
• Letter Spacing field: Controls the spacing between characters
within the created text object.
• Character Position drop-down list: Allows you to create subscript
and superscript text.
• Font Rendering Method: Allows you to define how you want fonts
rendered relative to antialiasing.
• Selectable button: Makes the text in the object selectable by the
end user at runtime. By default, Static Text is not selectable.
• Auto Kern checkbox: Permits Flash to automatically kern specific
pairs of text for increased readability and better aesthetic presentation.
• Alias Text: When using small text, you can select this option to
improve the visual quality of the text on screen.
• URL Link and Target fields: Allow you to specify that the entire
text object be treated as a hyperlink. When assigning a URL to a
text object, you can also specify an HTML target for the link to be
loaded into.
NOTE: When the Text Type drop-down list is set to Static text, several
of the controls in the lower part of the Properties panel are disabled,
as they cannot be applied to static text.
Entering Text Labels and Blocks
Once you have the Text tool selected, there are two ways to create the text
object, and depending on which method you use there are slight differences
in the result. The first way is to single click on the stage, and then
enter your text. When you do this, a small circle appears in the upper
right-hand corner of the text object-bounding box, as shown in Figure 5-
2a. This identifies the object as a text 05l-02a.tif bel.
The second method of entering text is to click-drag with the Text
tool (to create an area for the text entry) and then enter your text. When
you do this, you will note that the text object displays a small square in
the upper right-hand corner of the object on the stage, as shown in

“What’s the difference between a text label
and a text block?” you may ask. As far as manipulating,
formatting, and so on, there is little difference.
In both cases you can make the object a multiline
text object. For text labels you must press the
Enter key, whereas text blocks automatically wrap
when you read the right bounds of the text object.
The real difference relates to accessibility and how
the Flash player acknowledges the object.
In the first case, a text label, Flash will assume that something needing
a label will follow (or be in close proximity to) the object, such as an
input field or other object. Thus, if a nonvisual browser is being used to
view the Flash movie the Flash player will automatically “read” the content
of the label for the end user, as it will assume the text label is for
another object. Text blocks, on the other hand, function as independent
elements and are not tied to anything else in the environment. If you are
designing web sites and striving to accommodate web accessibility guidelines,
as well as ADA requirements, you should be aware of this difference.
NOTE: Chapter 15 deals in depth with accessibility and features
specifically designed to accommodate alternative browsers.
One of the things to note about both types of Static text
objects is that you can use the handle on the right-hand side to change the
width of the text object. If you click-drag the handle it will size, but when
you size a text label in this way it is “converted” to a text block. This is
visible in that the handle changes from a circle to a square. If you want to
“size” a text label and have it remain as a text label, you must use the Text
tool to manually enter carriage returns in the text (using the Enter key). To
practice using the Text tool, try Exercise 5-1.

Modifying Characters
Once you have created a text object, you can easily change the formatting
of individual characters. Generally all of the character-level attributes (font

face, size, character spacing, color, and so on) can be set per character, per
word, or per phrase.
To change the formatting at the character, word,
or phrase level, select the Text tool and click-drag
across the characters you want to change, as shown
in Figure 5-3. Once selected, changes you make in
the Properties panel will be applied to the selected
characters. Exercise 5-2 provides practice in modifying
characters.

Modifying Labels and Blocks
Items in the lower part of the Properties panel, as well as paragraph formatting,
must be applied to the entirety of the object. That is, you select
the label or block and then make
the assignment. For example, you
cannot have a single word or
phrase within the text object that
is a link. The entire object would
have to be a link.
In a similar fashion, paragraph
attributes are also assigned
at the block level. However, it is
possible to have a single text
object, which itself contains multiple
text blocks (separated by carriage
returns) assigned to different
paragraph properties, as shown in
Figure 5-4. The key to Flash letting
you do this is to make sure the
text within the object is separated
by at least one carriage return. To
practice modifying blocks, try

Assigning a Hyperlink
As noted, you can assign hyperlinks to text objects in Flash. When you do
so, the authoring environment displays a dashed line beneath the text
object, as shown in Figure 5-5. Although the
link is not active in the authoring environment,
when you test the movie or place it on the Web
the text will be an active web link. Additionally,
when the end user rolls over text assigned a
hyperlink, the cursor will automatically
change, signifying the ob05j-05e.tif ct is active.
TIP: When a text object is assigned a URL, Flash does not format
the text with typical underlining, nor does it change the color. If
you make a text object a link, it is suggested that you format it
such that the end user will know that it is a hyperlink; that is, with
an underline and a color change.
When you assign a URL to a text object, you will note that the Target
drop-down list becomes active. This list includes the four basic HTML targets,
the most common being _blank, which is used to open a new browser
window in front of the existing one. You can also enter your own window
name into the Target drop-down list if the page in which the Flash
movie you are designing resides in a frame’s document or structure.
Exercise 5-4 provides practice in creating text object links.
TIP: When you assign a URL to a text object, you can get away
with not entering the protocol information (http://) at the beginning
of the URL. However, to avoid potential problems it is recommended
that you always precede the URL with the protocol.

NOTE: You cannot assign a URL to vertically oriented text
(that is, text whose Text Direction is set to Vertical).
■ ■ ■ Dynamic Text
In addition to the ability to create static text objects, you can create a text
object that changes dynamically during movie playback. Dynamic text
fields are associated with an ActionScript variable you create. If you
change the variable, you change the text displayed in the associated text
object. Dynamic text objects can receive content from a variety of places,
not least of which is from an external source. However, before examining
that let’s look at how you set up a dynamic text field.
Dynamic Text Properties
To set up a dynamic text object, you choose the Text tool and then
Dynamic Text from the Text Type drop-down list in the Properties panel.
Figure 5-6 shows the options that appear in the Properties panel when you
select Dynamic Text. In addition to the general formatting options you
have already examined, several more options are available when Dynamic
Text is selected. Descriptions of these options follow.
• Instance Name field: This is the name of the text object. You use
a text object’s name to change the object’s formatting characteristics
using ActionScript. For example, you could change the color
(or any other allowable attribute) of a text object using
ActionScript.
• Line Type drop-down list: Defines how many lines of text can be
in the object. Valid options are Single Line, Multiline, and
Multiline No Wrap.
• Selectable button: Determines if the text can be selected by the
end user at runtime.

• Render as HTML button: Defines whether the content in the text
field should be interpreted as HTML code.
• Show Border button: Controls the border and background for the
field. The default is no border or background.
• Var field: Contains the name of the variable or property upon
which the text object’s content is based. Changing the content in
the variable changes the content displayed in the text field.
• Embed button: Yields a dialog box in which you can specify
whether or not font outlines for the field are embedded. By
default, font outlines are not embedded for text fields.
Creating Dynamic Text Fields
Follow along with the steps provided in Exercise 5-5 to learn how to create
dynamic text fields.

Use the following steps to learn about creating dynamic text
objects. To see a completed example before following along
with the instruction, open the file ch5_05s.fla.
The goal of this exercise is to create four dynamic text fields
(which track the mouse position) and a draggable object position.
The file already has ActionScript code included in it. In the exercise
you will simply create fields that “capture” values of the
mouse and the object so that you can see the stage coordinates of
the objects.
1. Select the Text tool and set the Text type to Static.
2. Begin by creating four text labels with the Text tool; that is,
single click on the stage with the Text tool and then enter the
text for the specific label. The labels should be named Mouse
X, Mouse Y, Object X, and Object Y.
3. Visually order the labels on the stage such that you can place
another text object to the right of each label. Use the solved
example as a guide.
4. Create four text objects, adjacent to the labels that have their
Text Type set to Dynamic. You may find it easier to create one
and then duplicate and position it.

NOTE: When you create a dynamic or input text object, the
small square that usually appears in the upper right is displayed
in the lower right. This identifies it as a dynamic or
input field. You do not necessarily have to enter a starting
value for a field, either. Unlike normal text elements, if you do
not enter text into the entry box the field will remain on the
stage.
5. Set the Var field for each of the dynamic text objects to
“receive” the correct value. The Var field of the text object
next to the Mouse X label should be myX.
NOTE: Capitalization is important, as ActionScript is case
sensitive. Make sure you enter the values in the Var field
exactly as specified.
6. Set the Var field of the text object next to the Mouse Y label to
myY by typing MyY in the field.
7. Set the Var field of the text object next to the Object X label to
dragX.
8. Set the Var field of the text object next to the Object Y label to
dragY.
9. Use Control | Test Movie to see the dynamic fields work. Try
dragging the green square.
This exercise stepped you through the basics of creating dynamic text
fields. There is a little ActionScript going on in the background that makes
the entire work. If you check out the ActionScripting in frame 1 you will
likely be able to decipher what is happening. If not, do not worry; the
ActionScripting is discussed in detail later in the book. The important
thing to understand is that dynamic fields are associated with ActionScript
variables: change the value in the variable and the Dynamic Text will also
change.
■ ■ ■ Creating Input Text Objects
Input text objects, like Dynamic text objects, are associated with variables.
In the last example you saw that dynamic text fields are linked to their
variables (as the variable changes, so does what is displayed in the
dynamic field). However, what makes input text different is that the user
can directly change the value in the text object, which in turn changes the
variable associated with it. Thus, dynamic fields are “one-way”; that is,
they are dependent on the variable. Input fields are “two-way,” meaning

that changes to the variable change the field, but changes to the field also
change the variable.
NOTE: Another difference between input text and dynamic text is
that whereas dynamic text may have a URL assigned to it input text
cannot. Thus, when you select Input Text from the Text Type dropdown
list the URL field is not available in the Properties panel.
You establish input text fields just as you do for dynamic text. That is,
you create a text object, set the Text Type (to Input text, instead of
Dynamic text), and then associate the field with a variable by placing a
variable name in the Properties panel Var field. Exercise 5-6 provides further
practice with dynamic and input text objects.

1. Click on the Text tool and create a text element on the stage.
2. In the Properties panel, set the Text Type drop-down to Input
Text.
3. Enter myfield in the Var field. If you wish to modify any of the
other text options, you may.
4. Create a label to place in front of the Input Text object you just
created and enter Input: into the text element.
TIP: As you create a series of fields, Flash remembers the
last text type you set, which can sometimes be frustrating.
Make sure you did not inadvertently create the label as an
input text object.
5. Create an additional text label below the first and enter
Output: in it.
6. Create another text object to the right of the second label. Set
Text Type in the Properties panel to Dynamic Text for this
object.
7. Set the new Dynamic Text object’s Var field to myfield also.
When you test the movie, data entered into the first field will
be posted to the second.

8. Test your movie to see that the value entered into the upper
text field is passed to the lower text field.
When working with text objects in Flash, keep in mind that Flash will
remember the last setting for the Text Type drop-down, as you saw in the
previous exercise. Be careful when creating text objects; make sure they
are the type you think they are as you create them.
■ ■ ■ Manipulating Text Objects
The following sections describe some special things you should know
about text objects. The sections are rather brief, but they highlight some
important things you should be aware of when working with text in Flash.
Transforming Text Objects
Text objects in Flash are just like any other overlay object. Thus, you can
quite easily use the transformations you learned about in Chapter 3 to create
skewed text that appears to be 3D. As it relates to skewed text, you
may again find Appendix A helpful when trying to determine skewing values
for objects on various planes. The primary thing to keep in mind is
that the smaller the exposure of the skew the more difficult the text will
be to read. Aside from that, given Appendix A you should be able to create
text on any pseudo-3D plane.
Breaking Text Apart
On occasion, you may want to modify the letters of a string of text in a
customized manner. For example, if you have text that says Drip that you
want to make look like it is dripping, you are not limited to just the fonts
you have. You can convert any text to its base-level fill objects and then
edit them using the various painting and drawing tools. Converting text to
fills in Flash is akin to the Convert to Paths command in FreeHand, except
that the resulting elements are fill objects.
NOTE: Break Apart is only active when you select a Static text
object. It is disabled when you select Dynamic or Input text objects.
To convert text to outlines in Flash, select a text block that is set to
Static with the Arrow tool and use Modify | Break Apart. The first time you
break apart text, it is split into its individual characters, whereby each
character is a static text object. If you use Break Apart again, the individual
letters are reduced to their basic fill components. Once you break text
apart a second time, it loses its text features, such as the ability to change
a word or phrase. Yet, once broken to its basic fills the fills that make up

the text can be modified just like any fill object. You can use the Arrow or
Subselection tool to modify the text as you wish.
The only negative thing about breaking text apart is the fact that
breaking apart large quantities of text can drastically increase the size of
your movie files. In essence, you are converting the letter representations
to a multiplied number of fills. Therefore, only break text apart for special
effects, and do so sparingly. Exercise 5-7 provides practice in using the
Modify | Break Apart functionality.

HTML Text Support
One of the unique features of text elements in Flash is that they can support
a limited number of HTML tags when set to Dynamic Text or Input
Text. From the developer’s perspective, this means you can create text elements
in which specific elements are used as hyperlinks. It also means that
you can use the rudimentary HTML formatting capabilities in the text elements
in your movie. Flash supports the following basic HTML tags.
• (anchor): Used to add hyperlinks to words or phrases in a
text object.
• (bold): Used to bold the selected text.
• : Changes the color of the tagged text.
• : Changes the typeface used in the tagged text.
• : Changes the font size of the tagged text.
• (italic): Used to italicize tagged text.

■ ■ ■ Tipos de Texto en Flash
En un rápido vistazo, será útil recordar los tres tipos diferentes de textos que podemos crear con Flash. Los tres se crean con la herramienta de Texto, y podemos cambiar fácilmente de un objeto de texto a otro. Los tres tipos de objeto de texto son los siguientes:

La figura 5.1 muestra el panel de Propiedades en relación a la herramienta Texto. Nótese que por defecto el panel de Propiedades aparece parcialmente escondido. Si hacemos un clic en la flechita blanca de la esquina izquierda inferior del panel de Propiedades, este se expandirá mostrando todas las opciones relacionadas con la herramienta Texto. Las opciones mostradas en la porción superior de la figura 5.1 determinan las propiedades generales de formato de texto. Éstas son las siguientes:

Menú desplegable de Tipo de Texto: Determina el tipo de objeto de texto que vamos a crear. Las opciones incluyen Texto Estático, Texto Dinámico y Texto de Entrada, como ya se hemos descrito anteriormente.
Menú desplegable de Fuente: Establece la apariencia de la fuente que usaremos para el objeto de texto. Los elementos que se mostrarán aquí serán los que haya instalados en su sistema.
Campo de Tamaño de Fuente: Regula el tamaño del texto en el interior del objeto de texto por medio de puntos.
Campo de Color de Texto: Determina el color del texto. El Color de Relleno, no el Color de Trazo, determina el color de los objetos de texto.
Botones Cursiva y Negrita: Nos permiten dar estilo de negrita o de cursiva al texto.
Botones de Justificación: Controlan el alineamiento de todo el bloque de texto. Las opciones de nivelado del texto a la izquierda, a la derecha o centrado, crean bordes desiguales en uno u ambos lados (en caso del centrado) del bloque de texto. El botón Justificar permitirá alinear el texto en ambos lados.
Botón Formato de Edición (propiedades de párrafo): Proporciona atributos adicionales de formato de párrafo, como sangrado, interlineado y márgenes izquierdo y derecho.
Botones de Dirección y Rotación: Estas opciones funcionan a la vez. Permiten definir el “movimiento” del texto dentro del campo, algo especialmente diseñado para representar el texto asiático con Flash.
Campo Interespaciado de Letras: Determina el espaciado entre caracteres dentro del objeto de texto creado.
Menú desplegable de Posición de Caracteres: Permite crear texto subíndice y superíndice.
Método de Dibujo de Fuente: Permite definir el dibujo de la fuente con respecto al suavizado.
Botón Seleccionable: Hace que el texto del objeto se pueda seleccionar por el usuario final durante la ejecución. Por defecto, el Texto Estático no es seleccionable.
Cuadro de Autoajuste: Permite que Flash rectifique parejas de texto específicas para mejorar la legibilidad y la presentación estética.
Texto Suavizado: Si usamos texto pequeño, esta opción permitirá mejorar la calidad visual del texto en la pantalla.
Campos de Vínculo URL y Destino: Permite determinar que todo el objeto de texto sea tratado como hipervínculo. Cuando asignemos una URL al objeto de texto, podremos también especificar un destino HTML como vínculo al que se cargará.
Nota: Cuando el Texto Estático está asignado en el menú desplegable de Tipo de Texto, varios de los controles en la parte inferior del panel de Propiedades quedarán deshabilitados, ya que no se pueden aplicar al texto estático.
Inserción de Etiquetas de Texto y Bloques
Una vez que hemos seleccionado la herramienta de Texto, existen dos formas de crear el objeto de texto, y dependiendo del método que usemos encontraremos ligeras diferencias en el resultado. La primera forma consiste en hacer un clic en la escena, y a continuación insertar el texto. Al hacer esto, aparecerá un pequeño círculo en la esquina superior derecha de la casilla de contorno del objeto de texto, como muestra la figura 5.2a. Esto identificará al objeto como etiqueta de texto.

El Segundo método para introducir un texto consiste en arrastrar el ratón con la herramienta de Texto (creando así un área para la entrada de texto) e introducir en ella nuestro texto. Veremos que el objeto de texto muestra en la escena un pequeño cuadrado en la esquina superior derecha del objeto de texto, como muestra la Figura 5.2b. Este Segundo método crea un bloque de texto.
“¿Cuál es la diferencia entre una etiqueta de texto y un bloque de texto?”, se preguntará. Además de manipular, dar formato, etc., no hay mucha diferencia. En ambos casos podemos convertir el objeto en un objeto de texto multilínea. En las etiquetas de texto debemos pulsar la tecla Enter, mientras que los bloques de texto se pliegan automáticamente al leer el contorno derecho del objeto de texto. La gran diferencia reside en la accesibilidad y en cómo el reproductor de Flash reconoce el objeto.
En el primer caso, la etiqueta de texto, Flash asumirá que algo que requiera una etiqueta seguirá (o estará cercano) al objeto, como un campo de entrada u otro objeto. De esta forma, si se está usando un navegador no visual para ver la película Flash, el reproductor Flash “leerá” automáticamente el contenido de la etiqueta para el usuario final, ya que asumirá que la etiqueta de texto corresponde a otro objeto. Por otro lado, los bloques de texto funcionan como elementos independientes y no están sujetos a ningún otro elemento del entorno. Deberemos tener en cuenta esta diferencia si al diseñar sitios Web nos afanamos por incorporar pautas de accesibilidad Web o criterios ADA.
Nota: El capítulo 15 explica con más profundidad la accesibilidad y las propiedades diseñadas específicamente para incorporar navegadores alternativos.
Una de las cosas que comprobaremos en los dos tipos de objeto de texto Estático es que podemos usar el indicador del lado derecho para cambiar el ancho del objeto de texto. Si arrastramos el indicador se ajustará el tamaño, pero si hacemos lo mismo con una etiqueta de texto, ésta se “transformará” en un bloque de texto. Podemos notar este cambio porque el indicador pasa de ser un círculo a ser un cuadrado. Si queremos ajustar el tamaño de una etiqueta de texto y que permanezca como etiqueta de texto, tendremos que pulsar manualmente la tecla Enter usando la herramienta Texto. Para practicar usando la herramienta de Texto, pruebe el ejercicio 5-1.

Modificación de Caracteres
Una vez hemos creado un objeto de texto, podemos cambiar el formato de los caracteres individualmente. Generalmente, todos los atributos de los caracteres (apariencia de fuente, tamaño, espaciado, color, etc.) pueden establecerse por letra, por palabra o por frase.
Para cambiar el formato a nivel de un carácter, de una palabra o de una frase, seleccionaremos la herramienta de Texto y arrastraremos el ratón por encima de los caracteres que queramos modificar, como muestra la figura 5-3. Una vez seleccionados, los cambios que hagamos en el panel de Propiedades se aplicarán a dicha selección de caracteres. Con el ejercicio 5-2 podremos practicar la modificación de caracteres.

Use la herramienta de Texto y el panel de Propiedades para modificar las características de formato de palabras y frases individualmente.
Modificación de Etiquetas y Bloques.
Los elementos de la parte inferior del panel de propiedades, así como el formato de párrafo, deben aplicarse a todo el objeto. Es decir, seleccionamos la etiqueta o el bloque y realizamos la asignación.
Por ejemplo, no podemos usar como
vínculo una sola palabra o frase dentro
del objeto de texto.
De la misma manera, los atributos de
Párrafo sólo pueden asignarse al nivel
De bloque. Sin embargo, es posible crear
un solo objeto de texto, que contenga a
su vez múltiples bloques de texto

Asignación de un Hipervínculo
Como habrá comprobado, con Flash podemos asignar hipervínculos a los objetos de texto. Al hacerlo, el entorno de la presentación muestra una línea discontinua por debajo del objeto de texto, como muestra la Figura 5-5. Aunque el vínculo no esté activo en el entorno de la presentación, si probamos la película o la colgamos en la Web, el texto aparecerá como un vínculo Web activo. Además, cuando el usuario final pase por encima del texto al que se le ha asignado un hipervínculo, el cursor cambiará automáticamente, indicando que el objeto está activo.
AVISO: Cuando asignamos una URL a un objeto de texto,
Flash no da al formato el típico subrayado, ni el cambio de color.
Si quiere hacer un vínculo de un objeto de texto, sugerimos darle formato de manera que el usuario final sepa que es un hipervínculo; es decir, asignando un subrayado y un cambio de color.
Cuando asignamos una URL a un objeto de texto, veremos que en el menú de Destino desplegable se hace activo. Este menú contiene cuatro destinos HTML básicos, siendo el más común _blank, que se usa para abrir una nueva ventana de navegador delante de la existente. También podemos introducir el nombre de nuestra propia ventana en el menú desplegable siempre que la página en la que estamos diseñando la película Flash se encuentre dentro de una estructura o documento de protocolo.
En el Ejercicio 5-4 podrá practicar la creación de vínculos de objetos de texto.
AVISO: Cuando asignamos una URL a un objeto de texto, podremos salirnos sin introducir la información de protocolo (http://) al comienzo de la URL. Sin embargo, para evitar posibles errores, se recomienda preceder siempre la URL del protocolo.
Ejercicio 5-4: Creación de vínculos de objetos de texto.
Abra Flash y cree un objeto de texto en la escena. Después asigne una URL al objeto mediante el panel de Propiedades. Use Control | Prueba de Película para comprobar que el vínculo funciona.

■ ■ ■ Texto Dinámico
Además de crear un objeto de texto estático, podemos crear un objeto de texto que cambia de forma dinámica durante la reproducción de la película. Los campos de texto dinámicos se asocian con unos valores de ActionScript creados por nosotros. Si cambiamos los valores, cambiaremos el texto mostrado en el objeto de texto asociado. Los objetos de texto dinámicos pueden recibir contenido de varios sitios, el cual procede en su mayoría de una fuente externa. No obstante, antes de examinar esto veamos cómo establecer un campo de texto dinámico.
Propiedades del Texto Dinámico
Para establecer un objeto de texto dinámico, elegiremos la herramienta de Texto y a continuación el Texto Dinámico del menú desplegable del Tipo de Texto en el panel de Propiedades.
La Figura 5-6 muestra las opciones que aparecen en el panel de Propiedades cuando seleccionamos el Texto Dinámico. Además de las opciones generales de formato que ya hemos examinado, estarán disponibles otras varias opciones cuando el Texto Dinámico esté seleccionado. A continuación se muestra la descripción de dichas opciones.
Campo de Nombre de Instancia: Este será el nombre del objeto de texto. Usamos un nombre de objeto de texto para cambiar las características de formato del objeto que utilizan ActionScript. Por ejemplo, podemos cambiar el color de un objeto de texto (o cualquier otro atributo permitido) por medio de ActionScrip.
Menú desplegable del Tipo de Línea: Determina cuántas líneas de texto puede haber en el objeto. Las opciones son Unilínea, Multilínea y Multilínea sin plegarse (No WRAP)
Botón seleccionable: Determina si el texto podrá ser seleccionado por el usuario final durante la ejecución.

Botón Interpretar como HTML: Determina si el contenido del campo de texto debe ser interpretado como código HTML.
Botón Mostrar Marco: Controla el marco y el fondo para el campo. Por defecto no se muestra ni marco ni fondo.
Campo de la variable: Contiene el nombre de la variable o propiedad sobra la cual está basado el contenido del objeto de texto. Si modificamos el contenido, la variable cambiará el contenido mostrado en el campo de texto.
Botón Incrustar: Muestra un cuadro de diálogo en el cual podemos especificar si el diseño preliminar (=contorno?) de la fuente para este campo estará o no incrustado.
Creación de Campos de Texto Dinámicos
Siga los pasos dados en el ejercicio 5-5 para aprender a crear campos de texto dinámicos.

Dé los siguientes pasos para aprender a crear objetos de texto dinámicos. Para ver un ejemplo completo antes de continuar con la instrucción, abra el archivo ch5_05s.fla. El objetivo de este ejercicio consiste en crear cuatro campos de texto dinámicos (que rastrean la posición del ratón) y una posición de un objeto que pueda ser arrastrado. El archivo llevará ya incluido el código has ActionScript. En el ejercicio simplemente crearemos campos que “capturen" valores del ratón y del objeto de forma que podamos ver coordenadas de los objetos en la escena.
1. Seleccione la herramienta Texto y sitúe el Tipo de Texto en Estático.
2. Comience creando cuatro etiquetas de texto con la herramienta de Texto; es decir, haga un solo clic en la escena con la herramienta de Texto y después introduzca el texto para la etiqueta específica. Las etiquetas deberán nombrarse como Ratón X, Ratón Y, Objeto X y Objeto Y.
3. Ordene visualmente las etiquetas en la escena de forma que pueda situar otro objeto de texto a la derecha de cada etiqueta. Use el ejemplo resuelto como guía.
4. Cree cuatro objetos de texto adyacentes a las etiquetas que tienen el Tipo de Texto situado en Dinámico. Le resultará más fácil crear uno y después duplicarlo y posicionarlo.
Nota: Cuando creamos un objeto de texto de entrada o dinámico, el pequeño recuadro que suele aparecer en la parte superior derecha se muestra ahora en la parte inferior derecha. Esto lo identifica como un campo dinámico o de entrada. Tampoco tendremos que introducir necesariamente un valor de activación para un campo. A diferencia de elementos de texto normales, si no introducimos texto en la casilla de entrada de datos el campo permanecerá en la escena.
5. Seleccione el campo Variable para que cada uno de los objetos de texto dinámicos “reciban” el valor correcto. El campo Variable del objeto de texto que se está al lado a la etiqueta Ratón X deberá ser miX.
Nota: La capitalización es importante, ya que ActionScript es una aplicación sensible. Asegúrese de que introduce los valores en el campo Variable exactamente como se ha indicado.
6. Seleccione MiY en el campo Variable del objeto de texto que está junto a la etiqueta Mouse Y, tecleando MiY en el campo.
7. Seleccione ArrastrarX en el campo Variable del objeto de texto que está junto a la etiqueta Objeto X.
8. Seleccione ArrastrarY en el campo Variable del objeto de texto que está junto a la etiqueta Objeto Y.
9. Use Control | Prueba de Película para ver funcionar los campos dinámicos. Inténtelo arrastrando el recuadro verde.
Este ejercicio le ha guiado en los conceptos básicos de creación de campos de texto dinámicos. Hay algo de ActionScript funcionamiento en el fondo que realiza todo el trabajo. Si comprueba el ActionScript en el marco/ protocolo 1, probablemente será capaz de descifrar lo que está ocurriendo. En caso contrario, no se preocupe; el ActionScript se tratará con detalle más adelante. Lo más importante de entender es que los campos dinámicos están asociados a variables de ActionScript: modifique el valor en la variable y el Texto Dinámico cambiará también.
■ ■ ■ Creación de Objetos de Texto de Entrada
Los objetos de texto de entrada, como objetos de texto dinámicos que son, se asocian con variables. En el último ejemplo vimos que los campos de texto dinámicos están vinculados a sus variables (según cambia la variable, también lo hace lo que se muestra en el campo dinámico) Sin embargo, los que hace que los textos de entrada sean diferentes es que el usuario puede modificar el valor directamente en el objeto de texto, lo que a su vez modifica la variable asociada a él. Así, los campos dinámicos son de “unidireccionales”; es decir, dependen de la variable. Los campos de entrada son “bidireccionales”, lo que significa que los cambios en la variable modifican el campo, pero los cambios en el campo también modifican la variable.
Nota: Otra diferencia entre el texto de entrada y el texto dinámico es que, mientras el texto dinámico puede tener una URL asignada a él, el texto de entrada no puede. De esta forma, cuando seleccionemos Texto de Entrada del menú desplegable Tipo de Texto, el campo URL no estará disponible en el panel de Propiedades.
Establecemos campos de texto de entrada de igual forma que hicimos con los textos dinámicos. Es decir, creamos un objeto de texto, seleccionamos el Tipo de Texto (texto de Entrada en lugar de texto Dinámico), y a continuación asociamos el campo con una variable, poniendo un nombre de variable en el campo Variable del panel de Propiedades. El ejercicio 5-6 facilita práctica adicional para los objetos de entrada y dinámicos.

1. Pulse sobre la herramienta Texto y cree un elemento de texto en la escena.
2. En el panel de Propiedades seleccione Texto de Entrada en el menú desplegable de Tipo de Texto.
3. Escriba micampo en el campo Variable. Si lo desea, puede modificar alguna de las otras opciones de texto.
4. Cree una etiqueta para situarla delante del objeto de Texto de Entrada que acaba de crear y escriba Entrada: en elemento de texto.
Consejo: A medida que va creando una serie de campos, Flash recordará el último tipo de texto que seleccionó, lo que en ocasiones puede ser frustrante. Asegúrese de que no creó la etiqueta, por descuido, como un objeto de texto de entrada.
5. Cree una etiqueta de texto adicional debajo de la primera y escriba Salida: en ella.
6. Cree otro objeto de texto a la derecha de la segunda etiqueta. Seleccione para este objeto el Texto Dinámico en Tipo de Texto del panel de Propiedades.
7. Escriba de nuevo micampo en el campo Variable del nuevo objeto de Texto Dinámico. Cuando pruebe la película, los datos introducidos en el primer campo se enviarán al segundo.
8. Pruebe su película para comprobar que el valor introducido en el campo de texto superior ha pasado al campo de texto inferior.
Cuando trabaje con objetos de texto en Flash, recuerde que Flash memorizará el último ajuste que se hizo en el menú desplegable del Tipo de Texto, como ya vimos en el ejercicio anterior. Tenga cuidado al crear objetos de texto; asegúrese que son del tipo del tipo deseado en el momento de crearlos.
■ ■ ■ Manipulación de Objetos de Texto
Las siguientes secciones explican algunos puntos esenciales que debemos saber acerca de los objetos de texto. Dichas secciones son bastante breves, pero ponen de relieve algunos aspectos importantes que deberá tener en cuenta a la hora de crear texto en Flash.
Transformación de Objetos de Texto.
Los objetos de texto en Flash son iguales a cualquier otro objeto de capa. Así, podremos usar fácilmente las transformaciones que aprendimos en el capítulo para crear texto sesgado que parezca texto 3D. En relación con el texto sesgado, encontrará útil una vez más el Apéndice A cuando intente determinar valores de sesgado para objetos en varios planos. Lo más importante que deberemos tener en cuenta es que cuanto menor sea la exposición del sesgado, más difícil será leer el texto. Aparte de esto, con ayuda del Apéndice A deberíamos ser capaces de crear texto en cualquier plano falso 3D.
Separación del Texto
En ocasiones, querremos modificar las letras en una serie de texto de forma personalizada. Por ejemplo, si tenemos un texto que dice Goteo y queremos hacer que parezca que está goteando, no estaremos limitados únicamente a las fuentes que tenemos. Podemos convertir cualquier texto a sus objetos de relleno básicos y después editarlos usando las diferentes herramientas de dibujo y pintura. En Flash, convertir el texto en relleno es parecido al comando Convertir en Trazados de FreeHand, excepto por que los elementos resultantes son objetos de relleno.
Nota: La Separación del Texto estará active solamente cuando seleccionemos un texto Estático. Estará deshabilitado cuando seleccionemos objetos de texto de Entrada o Dinámicos.
Para convertir el texto en contorno en Flash, seleccionaremos con la herramienta Flecha un bloque de texto que esté establecido como Estático y usaremos Modificar/Separar. La primera vez que separamos un texto, éste se divide en sus caracteres individuales, por lo que cada carácter es un objeto de texto estático. Si volvemos a separarlo, las letras individuales se reducirán a sus componentes de relleno básicos. Cuando hemos separado el texto por segunda vez, éste pierde sus características de texto, como la posibilidad de cambiar una palabra o una frase. Más aún, una vez dividido en sus rellenos básicos, los rellenos que forman el texto pueden modificarse como cualquier otro objeto de relleno. Podemos utilizar la herramienta Flecha o Subselección para modificar el texto como deseemos.
El único aspecto negativo de separar el texto es que si separamos grandes cantidades de texto, ello puede incrementar drásticamente el tamaño de nuestros archivos de película. En esencia, estamos convirtiendo las presentaciones de letras en un número múltiple de rellenos. Por lo tanto, separe el texto sólo para efectos específicos, y hágalo con moderación. El ejercicio 5-7 contiene práctica para el uso de la funcionalidad Modificar/Separar.

I cringe every time an art director or client asks me to “put it in a burst.” There’s
no doubt that the burst is probably the most overused design element in existence—
yet you still see them everywhere. That’s right. Any time the guy in marketing (you know the one I’m talking about) wants the price to stand out, you always have to “put it in a burst.” Ugh!
Despite my distaste for bursts, I am still forced to use them on occasion, and I’m sure you will be too. I guess the burst has its purpose in life and we’ll just have to accept it. However, just because we have to use a burst every now and again doesn’t mean that we necessarily have to play by the rules—and I’m just the guy to show you how you can break them using InDesign.
You may also be asked to use a burst in a spot-color design, which poses even more of a challenge. With these steps we’ll learn how you can add a little more excitement to a two-color sale tag design that includes a burst.
From Polygon to Burst in Seconds Flat
Combining InDesign’s corner effects with polygon star shapes can result in—believe it or not—creative bursts!
Step 1.
Create a new document and press D to select the default colors of None fill and black stroke. Then press M to access the Rectangle tool and draw a shape that is 15p wide and 20p high.To be precise, you can enter these values in the Width and Height fields of the Control or Transform palette once the shape is drawn.
Step 2.
If they are not already visible, press F+R / Ctrl+R to display the document window rulers. In the upper-left corner of the document window where the horizontal and vertical rulers intersect, click and drag to reset the zero point of the document to the upper-left corner of the rectangle, as shown. You can set your rulers to display picas by Control-clicking (Mac) or right-clicking on each ruler and selecting Picas from the contextual menu.
Step 3.
Click and drag a new ruler guide onto the page from the horizontal ruler above. With the guide still selected, enter 4p in the Y Location field of the Control or Transform palette.

Step 5.
Hold down the F or Ctrl key to temporarily access the Direct Selection tool. Click the upper-left corner point of the rectangle to select it. Enter 5p in the X Location field of the Control or Transform palette.
Step 6.
Hold down the F or Ctrl key again and select the upper-right corner point. Enter 10p in the X Location field of the Control or Transform palette. We now have an entirely new shape!
Tooltips
These little guys can be really helpful if you’re new to InDesign. Some of the visual label icons may be hard to decipher if you’re new to the interface, in which case it’s tooltips to the rescue! Just hover your mouse over any tool, control, or palette name and in a few seconds, a little yellow box appears with a description.
A few seconds not fast enough for you? Then open the InDesign General Preferences (F+K on Mac, Ctrl+K
on Windows) and under Tool Tips, choose Fast.
Once you get used to the interface, tooltips may become more of a nuisance than a help. If this happens, you may just want to turn them off altogether. To do this, open the InDesign General Preferences panel (F+K / Ctrl+K) and under Tool Tips, choose None.
Adjusting Ruler Guides
Some designers find ruler guides extremely helpful when setting up initial page layouts and templates. You can use guides to line up page items evenly and snap them into place. Guides do not print by default—although they can be printed if you so choose. It is easy to move, lock, snap to, add, or delete guides, and you can even assign them
different colors.
You can click and drag a new guide out from the horizontal or vertical rulers and onto the targeted page (or master page) at any time, no matter what tool you are using. Once the guide is placed, you can select it with either selection tool by hovering over it and clicking. To select multiple guides, Shift-click or marquee.
You can also choose to Hide/Show, Lock/Unlock, or Snap To guides under the View Grids & Guides submenu, or in the contextual menu (Control- or right-clicking anywhere on the Pasteboard). To access the Ruler Guides dialog, choose Layout Ruler Guides, or select a guide and choose it from the contextual menu.
Step 7.
Press L to access the Ellipse tool. Center the cursor about 3p below the top line of the shape. Hold down Shift+Option (Mac) or Shift+Alt (Windows) and click and drag to draw a perfect circle. Enter 3p8 in the Width and Height fields of the Control or Transform palette.
Step 8.
Press V to access the Selection tool. Hold down Shift and click the other shape to add it to your selection. Choose Window Object &
Layout Align (or press Shift+F7)
to display the Align palette, and click the Align Horizontal Centers button.
Step 9.
Press F+8 / Ctrl+8 to create a compound path from the two selected shapes.
Step 10.
Deselect the compound path. Click and hold the Ellipse tool icon in the Tools palette to reveal a list of shape tools. Select the Polygon tool from Shape tools list, and click the page. In the dialog that appears, enter 22p2 in the Polygon Width and Height fields, 20 in the Number Of Sides field, and 60% in the Star Inset field. Click OK to apply.
Step 11.
Choose Object Corner Effects. In the dialog that appears, choose Fancy from the Effect pop-up menu and enter 2p10 in the Size field. Check the Preview check box to see the effect applied as you enter the settings in the dialog. Click OK to apply.
Step 12.
Choose Window Swatches (or press F5) to display the Swatches palette. Select the yellow swatch in the palette list and choose New Color Swatch from the Swatches palette fly-out menu. In the dialog that appears, choose Spot from the Color Type pop-up menu and CMYK from the Mode pop-up menu. Create a gold build using C=0, M=12, Y=100, K=0. Enter a name into the field (e.g., gold) and click OK to add the swatch.
Adjusting Margin and Column Guides
You can set margin and column guides in the New Document dialog when starting a new project, and you can edit them at any time while working in the document. To edit, choose Layout Margins And Columns.
Unlike in QuarkXPress, you can edit the margin and column settings for individual document pages—not just master pages. Margin and column guides are applied just like any other master page item, but they can also be edited in the document page using the Margin And Columns dialog.
Note: To allow InDesign to resize or reposition any object that is aligned to a margin, column, or
ruler guide, enable the Layout Adjustment feature located under the Layout menu.
Aligning to Baseline Grid
Aligning multiple columns of body text to the baseline grid can greatly improve the overall appearance of a document. To display the baseline grid, choose View Grids & Guides Show Baseline Grid or press Option+F+’ / Alt+Ctrl+’.
In Grids Preferences, enter the leading amount you’re using for body text in the Increment Every data field, and click OK. Select the text frame and click the Align To Baseline Grid control in either the Paragraph palette or the Control palette.
To align just the first line of each paragraph to the baseline grid, select the text frame and choose Only Align First Line To Grid from the Paragraph palette menu.
Step 13.
Press X to bring the stroke icon to the front, if necessary. Press the forward slash key (/) to apply a stroke of None to the burst. Press V to access the Selection tool and select the compound path. Press the forward slash key (/) again to apply a stroke of None to the compound path.
Step 14.
Press X to bring the fill icon to the front. Double-click the red swatch in the Swatches palette to display the Swatch Options dialog. Choose Spot from the Color Type pop-up menu. Enter a name into the field (e.g., red) and click OK.
Step 15.
Choose New Gradient Swatch from
the Swatches palette fly-out menu.
In the dialog that appears, choose Linear from the Type pop-up menu. Click the left color stop icon located beneath the Gradient Ramp at the bottom of the dialog. Choose Swatches from the Stop Color pop-up menu and select the red spot color swatch from the list. Click the right color stop icon and select Paper from the swatches
list. Enter a name into the field
(e.g., red/white) and click OK.
Step 16.
Select the burst and press F+X / Ctrl+X to cut the object from the page. Select the compound path and choose Edit Paste Into. Press A to switch to the Direct Selection tool and click the burst to select it. Click the center point of the burst path and drag to position it within the compound path as shown.
Step 17.
Press V to switch to the Selection tool and select the compound path again. Press G to access the Gradient tool. Place the cursor directly beneath the center point of the compound path. Holding down Shift to constrain the angle, draw a vertical line that is approximately 2p in length. Doing so applies the red-to-white gradient behind the gold burst as shown.
Step 18.
To complete the design, add some text as shown. I used 100pt Compacta ICG Bold, with a white fill and 1.5pt red (spot color) stroke. Optical Kerning is applied to the type and the text frame is rotated 7º. A drop shadow is also applied using the red spot color set to the Hard Light mode at 75% opacity.
Snapping to Document Grid
You can align objects evenly on the page by snapping to the document grid. When shown, the document grid displays a series of both vertical and horizontal lines on the page, resulting in what looks like transparent graph paper placed over the top of your layout.
When made visible, the grid can be very distracting to work with—even when placed in back with a lighter color applied to it. Thankfully, you can still snap to the document grid even when it is hidden.
Document Grid color settings and gridline options are accessible in Grids Preferences. To align graphic frames and other objects to the top and bottom lines of paragraph text, enter gridline subdivision values that coincide with the baseline grid.
To snap to the document grid, select View Grids & Guides Snap To Document Grid, or Control- or right-click anywhere on the Pasteboard and select Snap To Document Grid from the contextual menu.
Translation - Spanish ¡Un estallido de Color se ha desatado!
Cada vez que un director de arte o un cliente me pide usar un estallido, me acobardo. "No hay duda de que el estallido es probablemente el elemento de diseño más utilizado que existe - y aun así los vemos por todas partes. Así es. Cada vez que el tipo de marketing (ya sabe a qué me refiero) quiere que el precio sobresalga, deberemos "ponerlo en un estallido". Agh!
A pesar de mi aversión a los paths, me veo obligado a utilizarlos de vez en cuando, y estoy seguro de que a usted le ocurrirá lo mismo. Supongo que el estallido tiene su propósito en la vida y que simplemente tenemos que aceptarlo. No obstante, el que tengamos que usar los estallidos cada dos por tres no significa que tengamos que hacerlo según las reglas - y soy yo quien le mostrará cómo podemos romperlas con InDesign.
Puede ocurrir que le pidan utilizar un path en un diseño de mancha de color, lo cual plantea algo más que un simple reto. Con los siguientes pasos aprenderemos cómo añadir un poco más de animación a un simple diseño de rótulo de dos colores con estallido.
Del polígono al estallido en cuestión de segundos
Combinar los efectos de esquina (vértice?) de InDesign con polígonos en forma de estrella puede dar como resultado - lo crea o no - estallidos creativos.
Paso 1.
Cree un documento nuevo y pulse D para seleccionar los colores por defecto de pincel negro y sin relleno. Después, pulse M para acceder a la herramienta Rectángulo y dibuje una forma de 15p de ancho y 20p de alto. Herramientas de ayuda

Paso13.
Presione X para traer al frente el icono Stroke (pincelada?), si es preciso. Presione la tecla de barra (/) para aplicar un stroke of None al path. Presione V para acceder a la herramienta de Selección y marque el path combinado. Presione de nuevo la tecla de barra (/) para aplicar un stroke of None al path combinado.
Paso 14.
Presione X para traer al frente el icono rellenar. Haga doble clic en la muestra roja de la paleta de Muestras para desplegar el diálogo de Opciones de Muestra. Seleccione Spot en el menú emergente del Tipo de Color. Inserte un nombre en el campo (Ej. rojo), y pulse OK.
Paso 15.
Seleccione Muestra Nuevo Degradado en el menú flotante de la paleta de Muestras. En el diálogo que aparece, marque Linear en el menú emergente de Tipo. Rotura en la Cuadrícula del Documento
Usted puede alinear objetos en la página de manera uniforme rompiéndolos en la cuadrícula del documento. Cuando aparece, la cuadrícula de documento muestra una serie de líneas verticales y horizontales en la página, lo que da como resultado una especie de papel de gráfica transparente situado por delante de tu diseño.
Cuando se hace visible, la cuadrícula puede ser muy molesta para trabajar - incluso si la situamos por detrás del diseño con un color más claro. Afortunadamente, podrá seguir rompiendo en la cuadrícula del documento incluso si ésta permanece oculta.

At first glance, you might guess that a common effect like this is really easy to pull off, right? Wrong! In fact,
even in a more advanced application like Adobe Illustrator, which contains a lot more tools for combining and
intersecting shapes, this
trick is—well … tricky!
All we’re trying to do here is connect two shapes together, like a key ring or a chain link. A good example of this (that almost everyone is familiar with) is the Olympic rings.
Currently, there is no Divide command in the InDesign Pathfinder palette as there is in Illustrator. Therefore, in order to create the appearance of interlocking shapes in InDesign, we have to use the Scissors tool and the Arrange commands. Note that once a line segment is cut and sent
to back, it must remain a separate element and cannot be grouped, or you will lose the effect.
Not as Simple as It Looks
Although it’s not as easy to create interlocking objects in InDesign as it is in Illustrator, it can be done. With these steps, we’ll interlock two circle shapes together to create a logo.
Step 1.
Create a new document and press L to access the Ellipse tool. Hold down Shift+Option (Mac) or Shift+Alt (Windows) and click and drag to draw a perfect circle. Enter 17p6 in the Width and Height fields of the Control or Transform palette.
Step 2.
Choose Window Swatches (or press F5) to display the Swatches palette. Press X to bring the stroke icon to the front and select the blue swatch in the Swatches palette.
Step 3.
Choose Window Stroke (or press F10) to display the Stroke palette. Enter 40pt in the Weight field.
Step 4.
Press V to access the Selection tool. Hover the cursor over the center point of the circle, hold down Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows), and click and drag to the right to make a copy of the object. Position the duplicate as shown.
Step 5.
With the duplicate circle still selected, click the red swatch in the Swatches palette to change its stroke color from blue to red.
Step 6.
Press C to switch to the Scissors tool. Hover the Scissors tool cursor over the upper left of the circle path as shown. When the cursor changes to display a target icon, click to cut the path. Then hover the Scissors tool cursor over the upper right of the circle path as shown. When the cursor changes to display a target icon, click to cut the path again.
Measure Tool
The Measure tool goes hand in hand with the Info palette. Use this tool to calculate the size of a placed graphic or the angle of a drawn path to match sizes or angles among objects in a document layout.
You can access the Measure tool by clicking its icon in the Tools palette or by pressing K on the keyboard. To use the tool, click and drag along the area you want to measure. The Info palette opens automatically, providing you with specific measurements, including X and Y coordinates, width, height, and angle.
Note: Holding down the Shift key as you click and drag constrains the Measure tool to 45° angles.
Button Tool
The Button tool is used for creating interactive behaviors that you can embed in an exported PDF document. Some of the behaviors you can attach to a button are Go To URL, Go To Anchor, Go To Page, Play Sound, and Play Movie.
You can access the Button tool by clicking its icon in the Tools palette or by pressing B.
To use the tool, click and drag over the area where you’d like to create
an interactive button. Or you can click once in the upper-left corner of the interactive area and enter the width and height amount for the button in the dialog that appears.
You can then specify the General and Behaviors options for a selected button by choosing Object Interactive Button Options. Choose the Event (Mouse Up, Mouse Down, etc.) and the Behavior (Go To Anchor, Go To Page, Play Sound, etc.) settings for your new button, and click OK.
Step 7.
Press F+Shift+[ / Ctrl+Shift+[ to send the path segment to the back. If you look closely, you will see two thin white lines appear where the path was cut, but these won’t show up when you print. The lines will also not appear on screen if you export the logo as a JPEG (to potentially be used as a web graphic).
Step 8.
Press the forward slash key (\) to access the Line tool. Hold down Shift to constrain to a 45° angle and draw a diagonal line that is 7p7 in length. You can enter this amount in the Line Length field of the Control or Transform palette once the line is drawn. Press V to switch to the Selection tool and position the line to the upper left of the blue circle as shown.
Step 9.
Click the blue swatch in the Swatches palette to apply a blue stroke. Then in the Stroke palette, enter 25pt in the Weight field and choose Triangle Wide from the Start pop-up menu.
Step 10.
Press the forward slash key (\) to access the Line tool again. Hold down Shift to constrain to a 45° angle and draw a vertical line that is 5p11 in length. You can enter this amount in the Line Length field of the Control or Transform palette once the line is drawn. Press V to switch to the Selection tool and position the line under the red circle as shown. Click the red swatch in the Swatches palette to apply a red stroke. Enter 25pt in the Weight field of the Stroke palette.
Step 11.
Double-click the Rotate tool icon in the Tools palette. In the dialog that appears, enter 90° in the Angle field and click Copy. Enter 5p5.5 in the Line Length field of the Control or Transform palette.
Don’t stop now—Customize the Effect: To add to the design, try placing some images and adding some text as shown. The example here uses the ITC American Typewriter font, with a 75% black tint fill applied. Adding the images is a little trickier. You have to make duplicates of the circles, place the images inside them, and then place the duplicate circles behind the originals. Depending on where you cut the circle to create the interlocking effect, you may also have to place a duplicate image inside the open path and line it up with the crop of the adjacent photo.
Scissors Tool
InDesign’s Scissors tool is used for cutting points and lines on a path. You can divide symmetrical shapes, such as half-circles or diamonds,
or remove pieces of a path to
create interesting logo effects
and design elements.
You can access the Scissors tool by clicking its icon in the Tools palette or by pressing C on the keyboard.
To cut points on a path, you must first select a shape with the Direct Selection tool, then switch to the Scissors tool. Hover your mouse over a specific point on the path until you see the cursor change to a target symbol. Click to cut the path. Continue clicking points until you’ve divided the shape the way you like. You can then separate the pieces with the Selection tool.
With the Scissors tool, you don’t necessarily have to cut points on a path—you can also cut the connecting lines between points. Select a shape with the Direct Selection tool, then switch to the Scissors tool. Hover your mouse over a line on the path until you see the cursor change to a target symbol, then click to cut it. You’ll see a new point added to the line. Keep clicking lines until you’ve divided the shape to your preference, then separate the pieces with the Selection tool.

A primera vista, puede parecerle que un efecto como este resulta fácil de quitar, ¿verdad? Pues es un error. De hecho, incluso en aplicaciones más avanzada como Adobe Ilustrator, la cual contiene muchas más herramientas para combinar e interceptar formas, este truco es, en definitiva, difícil.
Lo único que vamos a intentar aquí es entrelazar dos formas, a modo de llavero o eslavón de cadena. Un buen ejemplo de esto (con el que casi todo el mundo está familiarizado) son los anillos olímpicos.

Paso 1.

Gravedigger #2 And it is the finest pit we have dig this morrow! For 'tis, in truth, the only one!
[GRAVEDIGGER #1 hits GRAVEDIGGER #2 over the head with a shovel. JUDGE folds his arms]
Judge Then let the punishment commence! Where is the prisoner?
[A GUARD brings the PRISONER forth]
Ned, the Guard Here, sir!
Judge Then cast him down, master soldier!

Judge No, no! In the pit!

Incidentally, just let me say how pleased I am to be here in the graveyard, where so many other comedians have died before me. [bows] Why not?
[audience applauds. NEIL walks in and hits himself in the head with a frying pan and walks off. We see the graveyard is the back yard of the guys' house. In the house, we see RICK peering out at NEIL]
[CUT to interior of kitchen. RICK's face is pressed against the window]
Rick I've just seen the most amazing thing in the garden! Neil biffed himself in the face with a frying pan!
Mike: Rick, you've been looking out of that window for three hours now.
Rick: Yes, well it's hardly surprising, is it? Vyvyan put super glue all over the pane!
Vyvyan: [Reading comic on the couch] Did I? That was a good joke!
Rick: I'll probably be disfigured for life, Vyvyan, and you'll have to pay! Ha! And then who will be laughing, ha! [snort] Not you, matey. That's for sure!
Mike: Yeah, well just don't break the glass when you tear your face off, that's all.
Rick: I won't. I won't because... [quickly moves away from window] it's not true! It was a joke I made up, and you fell for it like the fascists you are! God, I'm bored! I might as well be listening to Genesis! [Walks to drawing room]

Vyvyan: Oh, shut up!
Rick: I'm trying to free form!

Rick: [snatching comic] That's MY bloody comic!

Rick: No, Vyvyan! It's mine! [sits down and reads] Anyway, there's no point in reading comics, they're stupid! They treat the kids is if they we're...well, as if they were, you know, kids! Nothing but war in them! War! War! Bloody war! Why can't they have stories about love and peace?

Rick: I'm not being girly, Vyvyan. Longing for a peaceful world is not being girly.

Rick: For one man to love another, Vyvyan, is not poofy. It's actually very beautiful. It's only when they start touching each others bottoms that it gets poofy.
Vyvyan: I'm going to tell Mike and Neil that you said you love men. Hey, Mike...
Rick: Look, all I said was this comic is a reactionary militaristic pamphlet! All they ever do is fight all the time!

Rick: Alright! Alright! Alright! What's this? [makes weird hippie body movement]
Vyvyan: Being poofy!

Rick: I think it's probably not very hard seeing how it's only made of water!
[VYVYAN snatches the comic, rips it in half, and throws it in RICKS lap]
Vyvyan: I'm going to find out anyway.
[VYVYAN walks over to the window and opens the pane. He sticks his glass of tea out the window, holds it out for a few seconds, and pulls it back in. The glass is covered in phlegm]
Vyvyan: It's only spitting!
Rick: [reading comic] God, this stuff is so reactionary! Why can't they show us some real heroes?
[CUT to comic strip panel. A bunch of KIDS are standing around. TWO POLICEMEN walk up. Caption reads: AN ORDINARY DAY. THE PIGS ARE HASSLING THE KIDS]
Policeman #1: [laughs] You gay, black bastards! We're going to victimise you!
Kids: Oh, no! [they cover their crotches] Who can help us now?

Neil: You want to know why I keep hitting myself in the head with a prying pan, don't you, Mike?

Mike: Did you get him?
Vyvyan: [picking up coins] No, but he's left a little present on the mat.
[slams the coins on the table]
Neil: Okay, guys. What do we need?
Rick: [putting on jacket] Neil, you know exactly what I need. Cause all my stuff is marked with sticky labels!
Vyvyan: Wait a minute! Is yours the stuff with the sticky labels with 'Rick' written on it?
Rick: Yes!
Vyvyan: [false compassion] Oh, sod it! I'm very sorry, Rick! I didn't know! I thought it was mine, and I've eaten it! Every last bit!
Neil: Look, guys, I know exactly whose food is whose, right. Cause I do all the shopping around here. And I do all the cleaning. My function around here, I might as well be your mothers!
Rick: But Neil, we don't hate our mothers!
Neil: Alright, so most metaphors don't bear close examination! Anyway, for example, [places a plate on the table] This glob of green mould on a saucer is Rick's.
Rick: Yes, and I've spat on that, Vyvyan. So I wouldn't advise you eat it!
Neil: The urine sample and the Super Mousse are Vyv's.
Vyvyan: Yeah, my potion! My potion as well!
Neil: What potion?
Vyvyan: It's a potion I've invented where when the patient drinks it he turns into an axe-wielding, homicidal maniac! It's basically a cure. For not being an axe-wielding, homicidal maniac. The potential market's enormous!
Neil: [taking a Coca-Cola can out of the fridge] What, is this it?
Vyvyan: Yeah! Yeah, I put it in a Coke can so nobody'd drink it by mistake.
Neil: [placing can atop the refrigerator] You know, I just bet a bit later on somebody does drink that and turns into an axe-wielding, homicidal maniac!
Rick: Yes, I bet that as well. That's just the sort of crazy, imaginative thing that happens around here, isn't it? [waits for response] I said, 'Isn't it?' [still no response, RICK sulks]
Neil: [pulling out pad of paper and pencil] Well?
Rick: Well what, hippie?
Neil: Well, what do we need?
Rick: Look, we need everything except urine samples, green globules, and...and Super Mousse!
Neil: [writing] Everything! Right: lentils...wallpaper...
Rick: LOOK, JUST GET TO THE SHOPS!
[CUT to outside house. NEIL exits and walks down the street. Pan up to opposite building where someone is staring out the window with a pair of binoculars. CUT to inside of room. MAN #1 is staring out the window. MAN #2 stands next to him. They are dressed identically: black derby, eyeglasses, black suit, black pants, black shoes, black scarf around their heads]
Man #2: Anything yet, Mr. B?
Man #1: Nope. No, nothing!
Man #2: Well, there must be something!
Man #1: Nope! Not a sausage! Look, why won't you let me take the lens cap off?
Man #2: Because they're not real binocliers! There's no point in taking them off!
Man #1: Well, why can't we have a real pair of binocoliers for a change?
Man #2: Because then the aliens would know that we're watching them, wouldn't they?
Man #1: But, we're not watching them!
Man #2: Yeah, but they're not to know that, are they?
Man #1: This may sound like a stupid question: Lip nip nip nip bip?
Man #2: Yes, it does.

Vyvyan: It's pissing down now!
Rick: [slamming refrigerator door] OKAY, THAT'S JUST ABOUT THE BLOODY LIMIT! It's...I mean I only put it in there on Wednesday, you know! It's not as if they grow on trees or anything like that!
Mike: [at table] Rick, what have you lost?
Rick: I had half an apple in there. Alright, own up, who's taken it?
Vyvyan: [on couch opening a can of lager] What were you doing, saving it for teacher? Trying to keep the doctor away?
Rick: If he's anything like you, YES!
[weird wide eye smile, in typical RICK fashion. He turns to MIKE, who has two avocado slices over his eyes and is using a small electric fan]
Rick: Did you take it, Mike?
Mike: Well, if you're going to sin, you might as well be original.
Rick: What's that supposed to mean?
Mike: I don't know.
Rick: Well, I'm going to look in your bin for the pits! [runs upstairs]
Mike: He shouldn't do that.
Vyvyan: Why not?
Mike: There's a lion tamer in my bedroom.
[CUT to shot of RICK opening door. He sees a room full of lions and screams. CUT to inside room. a lion tamer is busy dealing with three lions, saying things like: 'on plats', 'Pasha here', 'Pasha plats' , 'Pasha!', etc.CUT back to drawing room. NE IL enters carrying two kittens. He places them down as he pulls more kittens from his pockets]
Neil: I've never seen rain like this.
Vyvyan: Well, where's breakfast, then?
Neil: Oh, no. I knew I went out for something.
Mike: Neil, if your head was on straight you couldn't even pick at your nose!
Vyvyan: I'm starving, you bastard!
Rick: [enters room] Yes, so you keep saying, Hitler! Well, why don't you put your money where your mouth is and go to the shops yourself?
Neil: Yes, Vyvyan.
Vyvyan: Because I don't want my forehead to rust!
Rick: A little rain never hurt anybody! Anyway, you could take your stupid car!
Vyvyan: [looking, points to window] I could if it was tied down properly! [shot of drawing room. Everyone looks to see VYVYAN's car float by]
Rick: Blimey! Look at the water out there! Now we're never going to get to the shops!
[VYVYAN stands on a chair and looks at NEIL]
Vyvyan: Hey, Neil! Can I have a look at your tonsils? [wields his dagger]
Neil: Why, do I sound ill?
Vyvyan: No, no! I just want to pop myself a breakfast. [NEIL opens his mouth]
Rick: Oh, for Heaven's sake! Why can't we all start to act like civilised people? I mean, we are students after all. We're old enough to vote. We're old enough to do things to girls. We can go to prison. We can drive. Last week I even got into an 'X' film, for Christ's sake. So, how about finding some nice adult pursuit to keep us going until the rain stops? Michael?
[shot of MIKE looking in the distance. FADE to RICK, who is covering his eyes and counting. They are playing 'Hide and Seek'. CUT to NEIL opening the door to Mike's bedroom. He sees the lions and poohs in his pants. He carefully runs down the stair s to RICK's room, as VYVYAN exits, blowing out a match. CUT back to RICK, still counting]
Rick: Sixty-seven...Eighty...Two thousand, five hundred! Coming, ready or not!
[opens cabinet door over the stove. MIKE is huddled up in there]
Rick: Found you, Mike!
Mike: No, you haven't!
Rick: What?
Mike: Listen, I'm the best at playing games in this house, so you better go find the others first.
Rick: I'm sorry, Mike.
Mike: That's alright, that's alright. Just come back in five minutes when they've lost the game.
Rick: Right. [closes cabinet door. He starts to walks away, but returns, knocks on the cabinet door, and opens it] Great hiding place, Mike!
[closes door and walks to the stairs. VYVYAN is sitting there, lighting a cigarette]
Rick: Well, for Heaven's sake, Vyvyan, I've found you! Why won't anybody play this game properly?
Vyvyan: Look, I haven't started hiding yet, have I?
Rick: Well, would you mind doing it now, please? I'll give you five.

Witch: Stop here, Shirley.
Shirley: Look, your majesty. A young fawn!
Witch: That's not a fawn, that's a man-child, son of Adam. His presence signals danger.

Witch: Silence, we must question him. [to VYVYAN] Hello, little boy! What's your name?
Vyvyan: [walking over] Vyvyan!
Witch: [holding plate of Turkish Delight] What a lovely name. Come, sit next to me, child.
[VYVYAN sits in sled.] Have some Turkish Delight.
[VYVYAN leans over and opens his mouth. WITCH recoils in disgust]

Vyvyan: It's not me!
[SHIRLEY pulls his beard off and grabs VYVYAN's collar]
Shirley: That's revolting! That's revolting! People like you should be put in little boxes, tied up with string, and left in small dark rooms with out any electricity!
Vyvyan: Who says?
Shirley: For a month!
Vyvyan: WHO SAYS?
Shirley: [weakly] She does.
Witch: I did not! That's a lie, Shirley!
Vyvyan: 'Shirley'? Is that your name, then? 'Shirley'?
Shirley: It's better than 'Vyvyan' by a longshot!
Vyvyan: Oh, yeah? 'Shirley'!
Witch: Oh, would you two shut up! Would you like some Turkish Delight, my child?

Vyvyan: Look, I'm in a bit of hurry actually. You see I'm trying to hide from someone. You haven't seen a would-be Sociology student being chased by a lion, have you?
Witch: [horrified] A lion?
Shirley: Lion?
Vyvyan: Well, if you do, don't tell him I'm hiding in this tree over here, okay? [walks to tree]
Witch: No, wait! Man-child, I command you to wait! Stop him, Shirley!
Shirley: You majesty! He said a lion! It's the prophecy!
[VYVYAN enters the tree with a scream. CUT to VYVYAN sliding down a dark tunnel. CUT to cellar. RICK is searching the room. VYVYAN falls out of the fireplace, unseen by RICK]
Rick: Oh, what is the bloody point? Alright, Vyvyan. I give up!
Vyvyan: [waves his arms] Coo-ey!! Behind you!
Rick: [shuts cellar door] You bloody cheat! I thought we said no hiding in the cellar!
Vyvyan: Then what are you looking in the cellar for?
Rick: Uh...I'm not looking for you, actually. I just came down here to tell you I didn't want to play your bloody childish game anymore!
Vyvyan: What do you mean? It was your idea to play 'Hide and Seek'!
Rick: It was a joke! I was playing another joke on you! And, Ha Ha Ha, because you fell for it!
[puts hands on hips and gives smug look]
Vyvyan: [thinking for quick comeback] Well, I didn't fall for it because...because while you were counting to one hundred, I went up to your bedroom and set fire to your Sociology file! [smiles]
[RICK's smug look as turned to a look of pure anger. He takes out his biro, digs it into VYVYAN's head, and backs away laughing. VYVYAN, on the floor, shakes the cobwebs out and throws a crowbar at RICK. The crowbar gets RICK's jacket by the right collar and attaches him to the cellar door. VYVYAN picks up a hatchet and prepares to do RICK in. RICK screams as NEIL opens the door.]
Neil: Lads! Lads, come quickly! Rick's bedroom is on fire!
Vyvyan: Great! [grabs a gasoline can] Come on!
[he shuts the door. RICK falls to the ground with a thud]
Rick: They've hurt my bottom!
[CUT to drawing room. A siren is heard in the background as JERZEI BALOWSKI enters through the door]
Jerzei: Hello? Hello, boys? It's Jerzei Balowski, your landlord, come for the party with the Tremeloe's records, boys! Hello boys, anybody home? Hello? Oh, nobody home, oh. [spies soda can on top of the refrigerator] Oh! Coca-Cola! Symbol of free West! Oh! [Grabs can] Oh, I like Coca-Cola. Mmm! [Takes a sip, and screams in pain] Oh, tastes good! Hello, boys? Hello b... [screams again and drinks some more] Hello, boys? Hello? [has minor convulsions] Hello, boys? Where are you? Boys? [howls at skeleton as he enters the wardrobe] Boys? Hello? Where are you? Hello, boys! Where are you?
[CUT to stairs. NEIL and VYVYAN approach the door to RICK's bedroom. As NEIL speaks, VYVYAN is placing the spout on the gasoline can]
Neil: And I was just...I was just hiding there in the wardrobe, right. And it was getting really hot. And then...and then I thought, 'Oh, no. I forgot to put out that Sociology essay that was burning on Rick's desk!'
Vyvyan: Yeah, I started that! Try to make Rick think I was hiding in his bedroom.
Neil: What? You set fire to Rick's bedroom? I think that's a really selfish thing to do, Vyvyan! I was hiding in there, and you could have given me away!
[RICK runs in, holding his bottom]
Rick: Help! Help! Call the firemen! [enters room, his bed is ablaze]
AIEEGH! Help! Call the fireman!
[RICK opens the windowsill, and a huge gush of water comes in, dousing the flames and soaking RICK]
Vyvyan: [enters with NEIL] Blimey! That was quick! [sits on the bed. RICK is sitting on the floor with a fish flapping about in his jacket]
Rick: Well, super! Perfect! Lovely! Wonderful! Good old Vyvyan! Big tip, 'A' plus, ten out of ten, go and see Mater and get up another bit of tuck! Bloody great, isn't it Vyvyan? Just think, I won't have to put my...my...my bed in the toaster now.
[MIKE enters with a suitcase and a cigarette in his mouth]
Mike: Anybody got a light? [walks over to the bed and lights his cigarette on a small flame]
Rick: Oh, Blooming flip! Sorry, Mike! Silly of me! I did have one, but I went and put it out! I'm such a twit! Slap! Slap! Slap!
Mike: Hey, Rick. You've got a fish sticking out of your shirt!
Neil: I hate sharks!
Vyvyan: Don't be stupid, Neil. That's not a shark!
Neil: [pointing to window] No, but that is. [they look at the window to see a shark swimming]
Vyvyan: That's just the most completely brilliant thing I've ever seen...A flying shark!
Mike: Uh, Vyvyan. Sharks don't fly.
Vyvyan: Oh, wow! That's what those sirens must have been, of course. Shark warnings!
Mike: Look, I don't want to be a wet blanket or anything, but if this house is a bottle, I'm the one with a message.
Neil: What do you mean, Mike?
Mike: [exiting] Simple, London has flooded.
[pause. RICK is in shock. VYVYAN is fascinated. NEIL is pondering]
Neil: Oh well. well, we'll all probably get drowned or eaten by octopuses, then.
Rick: WHAT? Phone the police!
Neil: But they're fascists!
Rick: Well, never mind about that now! Telephone, Vyvyan!
[Vyvyan runs down the stairs past MIKE who is going upstairs. VYVYAN grabs the phone and pulls it off the wall, cord and all. He then runs back upstairs, passing MIKE who is going downstairs, and back into RICK's bedroom. He places the receiver to his ear, and then throws it down]
Vyvyan: [exhausted] Oh, it's broken.
[CUT to JERZEI in the wardrobe passing the same scenery as VYVYAN did]
Jerzei: Hello boys, hello? [drinks and spits it up violently] Hello, boys? Anybody home?
[CUT to the staircase. The boys all run down the stairs]
Rick: I know, switch on the radio. There's bound to be a public information bulletin! [VYVYAN switches on the radio]
[CUT to a station. A DJ and a PUNK are having an interview. The PUNK has no arms.]
DJ: And exactly how long have you been in the music biz?
PUNK: Since lunchtime. I was working in a well known launderette in the King's Road this morning. Malcolm McLaren came in and liked the look of me.
DJ: Right.
PUNK: [mumbles to herself]
DJ: And was it his idea that you should amputate your arms?
PUNK: Originally, yeah! I could see the validity of the idea from the beginning!
DJ: Right! In what way?
PUNK: Well, my music is all about urban alienation, apparently.
[Water comes in from the vent]
DJ: What? Hey, what's going on here?
PUNK: I can't swim!
DJ: [panicking, he rushes out the studio, knocking the PUNK to the floor] I can't even see. Look, you do it! Why wasn't there anything about this on the radio?
[CUT back to the drawing room. The radio is leaking water. RICK frantically turns it off. Pan back to see MIKE folding his blow-up doll in his suitcase. VYVYAN is building a cardboard submarine using a small hammer, and NEIL is decorating it with a small vial of paint and a brush]
Rick: That's just typical of you, Vyvyan! The house is under fifty feet of water and what do you do, build a submarine! [thinks] There's, um, no room for me in there, is there?
Vyvyan: No!
Rick: Good.
Vyvyan: Of course there isn't any room in it for you! Why should there be any room in it for you? I want to see you drown! And If I want to see you drown, why should I build a submarine with room enough for you in it? Stupid! I'm not even taking SPG along!
SPG: Is that right? We'll see about, pally!
[SPG flies into the air and bites VYVYAN on the neck]
Vyvyan: Bastard! [he falls onto his submarine, wrecking it]
Neil: Oh, wow. Vyvyan, man, you broke your own submarine!
[VYVYAN grabs SPG and starts pummelling him with the hammer]
Vyvyan: You bastard! I've shown you a great deal of consideration over the years but THIS IS THE END OF THE LINE! YOU'RE GOING OUT TO PLAY WITH THE SHARKS!
[VYVYAN takes SPG and walks outside. CUT to water scene. A SHARK is swimming, as SPG swims by]
SHARK: Hello, are you lunch?
SPG: Is that you, Jaws? I think you're great! I've seen all your films! Can I have your autograph?
SHARK: [sighs] It's a bore I know, but, you know, I'd miss it if they didn't ask.
[CUT to JERZEI next to the tree]
Jerzei: Hello? Anybody, hello? Hello? Tree. Oh, tree. Hello, anybody in the tree?
[he enters and falls down the tunnel into the cellar. He slowly rises behind a bunch of cardboard boxes, breathing heavily. When he appears, he twists the can and throws it down screaming. He then grabs an axe and heads out of the room]
[CUT to kitchen. NEIL is blowing up water wings. VYVYAN is sitting on a chair. RICK is sitting on the counter smoking a cigarette]
Neil: Hey, wouldn't it be terrible if we ended up having to eat each other. Like those sailors did in that movie, um, 'We Ended Up Having To Eat Each Other.'
Rick: Yes, I suppose it would, Neil. Except that we don't happen to have any dead sailors lying around the place. Or perhaps we do, perhaps I just haven't seen them. Perhaps I should buy myself a white stick!
Neil: I was just saying...
Rick: YES, WELL DON'T!
Mike: Alright! Alright, alright, alright! As usual, Mike, the cool person, comes up with a solution in times of trouble, and even trouble with a capital 'T'. This is, as they say, the moment of not telling too many lies. [pause] Are you with me?
Vyvyan: No, not at all!
Mike: The definition of hunger: Too many guys, not enough food. All we've got to do is change the ratio! And Neil's come up with the answer.
Neil: Oh!
Mike: Yeah, there's only one problem. Who's going in the pot?
[long pause. RICK has a grin on his face]
Rick: ME! [to NEIL] No, him. It was a joke!
[CUT to NEIL's bedroom]
Neil: Just my luck. I was supposed to get the shortest straw. Mind you it was pretty uncool of the guys not to show me theirs, but there you go. [the door bursts open and MIKE, RICK, and VYVYAN bust in.] Oh, hi guys! Yeah, Come and sit down, yeah! Uh, do you want to play some records? [RICK and MIKE force NEIL onto the bed] Uh...Oh, look guys...Guys, I just remembered I got something, uh, really important to do, you know. So, goodbye.
Mike: No time for that, Neil. We're hungry!
[VYVYAN turns on a hedge trimmer. NEIL screams in fright]
Rick: Ha! He's scared! He's scared! 'Scaredy cat, scaredy cat! Sitting on the doormat! All the little doggie-wogs... [notices that VYVYAN and MIKE are staring at him] ...will have a little bit of it.'
[VYVYAN turns on the hedge trimmer again.]
Vyvyan: Right! Here we go!
Mike: [frantic] Hold it! Hold it! HOLD IT! [VYVYAN turn off the trimmer] Hold it like that! [shows] Then you get a nice clean cut and there's no mess! [VYVYAN turns on the motor. NEIL sits upright]
Neil: Oh, Vyvyan?
Vyvyan: Yeah?
Neil: Vyvyan, could I have an anaesthetic?
Vyvyan: Course you can! [he hits NEIL over the head with a hammer. NEIL passes out, but quickly revives]
Neil: Oh, no. Wait, wait, wait, wait! Uh, uh, look...Uh, Mike, is there time for a last cigarette?
Mike: I don't see why not, yeah! [he pulls a cigarette out from behind his ear and puts it in his mouth. RICK lights it. MIKE takes one drag and douses it out] Alright.
[VYVYAN prepares to slice NEIL in half, when a small section of the door is chopped off by an axe as JERZEI stick as much of his face in the crack as possible]
Jerzei: Heerrree's Jerzei!
Rick: It's Mr. Balowski!
Vyvyan: How did he get in here?
Neil: Well, you could eat him instead, actually.
Jerzei: Little pigs! Little pigs! Let me in! Boys and girls come out to play on the busy motorway! Let me in! Jerzei wants to play 'Hospital'!
Rick: Oh, my God! He's turned into a homicidal axe-wielding maniac!
[MIKE covers himself with a sheet]
Neil: Oh, well! Out of a frying pan, into another frying pan...
Rick: Shut up, Neil! Shut up! [NEIL continues to babble. JERZEI starts screaming]
Shut up! Shut up! BLOODY SHUSH! SHUSH! [runs to the door where JERZEI is trying to cut his way in]
There's nobody in here, Mr. Balowski! We're all holograms! What are we going to do, Mike? [looks for MIKE, who is invisible, thanks to the sheet]
[CUT to outside the bedroom. JERZEI is chopping at the door. A chair is here with a backdrop reading, 'HALF TIME REPORT' JERZEI stops cutting and sits down. He speaks in a different voice]
Jerzei: Well, we're halfway through the show, and it's time for a half time report. I think the show has been going particularly well. I particularly like how the young lad, Rick, has been going off the joke into the dead laugh area... [quick sh ot of the boys watching this on a television set. MIKE is sill covered by the sheet]
Jerzei: Going into the international sphere, they're going to have to face some stiff competition especially from the Swedes with their comedy series, "Ooh, Where's My Volvo?" and also, of course, from the French with their comedy series, "Mr. Poo Poo Goes to the Lavatory".
Voice: ...we're going on!
Jerzei: Oh, sorry, Paul. Anyway, the half times over now and it's back to the action.
[Screams and chops off another section of the door. He is back using his normal voice]
Jerzei: Let me in, boys! Jerzei wants to finger your entrails!
Rick: I know, let's put Neil's speaker in front of the door!
Speaker: I don't want to go in front of the door!
[NEIL shields his speaker from the others]
Neil: Oh, not that speaker! Jimi Hendrix once pissed on that!
Rick: Then let's put Neil in front of the door!
[they force NEIL to the door. JERZEI grabs him by the throat. VYVYAN takes the hedge trimmer and cuts a section of the wall out]
Rick: Yes! Yes! Bite his fingers, Neil!
Neil: You know I can't do that! I'm a vegetarian!
Rick: Well, keep him occupied while we escape.
[RICK, MIKE, and VYVYAN rush out the hole. NEIL grabs JERZEI's hand and blows his nose on it]
Jerzei: UGH! You nasty boy...
[NEIL runs out through the hole. JERZEI chases them up the stairs. CUT to the outside of MIKE's bedroom. JERZEI runs in as VYVYAN slams the door. Sounds of lions eating JERZEI]
[CUT to staircase. The boys are descending]
Vyvyan: It's a good job Bobby was here with his man-eating lions.
Rick: Yes, I'd like to shake his hand.
Mike: Here. [gives RICK a severed hand]
