I am as careful today as I was x years ago. The main difference is that over the years I developed a sixth sense when it comes to avoiding scammers and bad payers. I always exercise due diligence when I’m contacted by a potential client. There are, fortunately, many ways of finding out whether a client is good to work with or not…

But I was thinking more along the lines of becoming incapacitated.
I have prepared my daughter by explaining to her my business flow and what to do in case I suddenly couldn't fulfil my obligations.

Given the increase in the number of new agencies run by clueless owners, as well as the variety of scams described here on Proz, risk management is not a waste of time and effort for new translators. I believe that most of us who have been at this for a while have developed an instinct for sniffing out bad or incompetent actors. We've acquired research skills that help discover whether a potential client is worth taking on. We call it common sense, but for new translators, it's a conscious skill that has to be developed.

I think that we have reached a juncture where the towel has been thrown in on most such pretenses of disaster relief. The devastation that has been wrought simply resists all efforts at cheery and hopeful spin.
