Looking for advice: Translation student in Italy thinking of starting a news translation blog Thread poster: Annalisa Magnani

Hi everyone! I’m a translation student in Italy and I am particularly interested in news translation. I am thinking about opening a blog on the topic “Italy seen from abroad” where I propose my own translations of foreign newspaper articles about Italy.
I still don’t know whether this could be a good idea but I think it could make sense to start doing a bit of practice.
What do you think?

Just remember that publishing translations of copyrighted articles without permission from the owner would most likely be copyright infringement. But you could summarise articles and add your own comments. If people want to see a translation of an article in a language they don't understand, they just let Chrome do it.

That is a good idea. Make sure translating and publishing translations of news content is allowed in Italy without consent of the publisher or author of the news content. There are often exceptions of this kind for news content.
Alternatively, you can do what newspaper journalists are supposed to do: do not translate the content but rewrite/recreate new content based on the factual information contained in the foreign news content.

Yes, it is, so I would suggest making sure such a blog reflects a strong personal character, for example with humour, and uses writing techniques that make it stand out from the bland ChatGPT responses.
NB: as Annalisa has chosen the so-called inclusive format, which is actually a restrictive format that limits each poster to two posts, this is the last word from me in this topic. The 'inclusive' format prevents any type of dialogue taking place in a topic – such a brilliant invention for a forum. Goodbye for now, everyone.

Annalisa, I think this is a great idea, and you can choose articles that reflect your specialist subjects, or the subjects that are of interest to you and that you would like to develop into a specialist subject.

... or maybe not. I just got the proofread versions of a couple of recent translations back and I saw that all my attempts to produce non-bland turns of phrase had been ironed out, to the point that it might just as well have been ChatGPT that produced the translation.
This happens all the time. I market my work as "creative flair in translation", I'm told when I'm hired that "we really like your style" then the proofreader irons all the stylishness out. If I complain, I'll probably be told that the proofreader knows best what the client actually wants.

Thank you for all your precious suggestions and points of view, I really appreciated it. I have just started my M.A. in Specialised Translation in Italy and I still have to figure out what I'm going to do with it.
I will for sure take into consideration every thing you mentioned.
P.S. sorry for having set this forum on the "inclusive" mode (which wasn't appreciated by everyone), but it was the first time for me posting on Proz and I need some more practice.
