Minimum little noise required Oct 15, 2025

The washing machine from time to time, some cats meowing, music and a couple of cars passing by hourly. It would feel awkward if working in complete silence, sounds like an impossible situation though.

My workspace overlooks the rear of my building, which is mainly occupied by a hotel terrace. This means that noise levels are low during the day, but at night it's a different story when the hotel organises dinners on the terrace...

Basement dweller with music Oct 15, 2025

I have my office in the basement, so I am mostly unbothered by any noise from outside, unless there's some serious sawing, mowing and/or flexing going on.
That being said, I am usually listening to music at, say, slightly more than room volume.

It is quiet. Oct 16, 2025

I live in a rural place where you listen to birds, crickets, and dogs barking. I can sometimes listen to my family talking or some cars passing by my house, but it is still quiet. To be honest, I do like it a lot.

Still bearable (doesn't happen too often). One thing that's really taxing on your ears is everyone knocking off slag, all the time, after every pass. A translator working from home has probably never been exposed to that level of hammering noise. And I have no regrets: I wanted a more dynamic life and got it ▲ Collapse
