Sorry if this has been asked before - but the problem has existed for a long time, so I assume it hasn't.

If you post longish URLs as references for KudoZ answers, they get truncated, with a little row of dots to show where characters have been taken out.

Sometimes they still work when you click on them, but often they don't. On occasions, you can post three or four links, and none of them works, which makes you look silly.

As nobody bothered to reply... Aug 27, 2011

Tinyurl: tiny.cc/ does work, and it has been suggested before. Occasionally some people use it on KudoZ, but you may not have noticed it.
I am not an expert, so I suggest, read this as well: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_shortening

Long URLs Aug 27, 2011

I alway try them out by copying them into Word and then try to open them in the context menu. If it does not work, I copy them into tinyURL.com in order to get a very short version that always works.
Good luck
Rolf

Please submit a support request Aug 29, 2011

Hello all,

Would you mind submitting a support request and specifying a few KudoZ questions in which the URLs provided as reference get truncated? This will help me look into this further.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Lucia

There will always be problems Aug 29, 2011

The sad truth is that URL detection is really nothing but educated guesswork. The thing is that almost anything other than whitespace is valid in a URL, but most systems assume certain characters will never be part of URLs (and thus will truncate the URL as soon as it sees those characters). Because URL recognition is ultimately based on faulty assumptions, there will always be some URLs that will cause problems.

Sorry, Lucia, but finding examples is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. It's happened to me in the past week, but I've responded to too many questions to find it. You must have seen examples yourself, where people say "very interesting, but all your references are invalid".

Does anyone else have any examples?

Example Sep 1, 2011

I just ran into an example on Kudoz, in this question:

The URL truncated is this:

The URL truncated is this:

http://i.ebayimg.com/23/!BpEc2gQCGk~$(KGrHqYOKjoEuZqIE765BLp3P-tIzQ~~_35.JPG

It was cut off after the tilde, before the dollar sign. The dollar sign $ is, of course, a valid and pretty common character in URL’s.

Thanks Ambrose Sep 1, 2011

Although that's not quite the same problem as I'm talking about: only part of the link is underlined, so although it doesn't work when you click on it, it's still a valid URL which you can cut and paste into your browser.

Does anyone have any examples? Otherwise, it's a bit hard to submit a support request.

Thanks for the example, there is no need to submit a support request Sep 1, 2011

Hello,

Thanks for supplying an example on what kind of links are cut on KudoZ. Unfortunately, as Ambrose said above, problems when recognizing URLs are hard to prevent, and there will always be some URLs that aren't properly detected.

The system for recognizing URLs will be improved and updated if possible, but the safest bet in the meantime is to use an URL redirection service, like TinyURL.

In any case, I think a good first step would be to bring KudoZ’s URL recognition in line with the forums’ version. In case you haven’t noticed, in the example above the whole URL is recognized correctly, so there’s a discrepancy here which shouldn’t exist.

This recent thread raised questions about the security of Tiny URLs. What do you think about that, Alejandro?

Perhaps this is it Sep 10, 2011

http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/business_commerce_general/4510483-hôtel_dentreprise.html

It looks like a couple of the references have literally been “cut off”, at a random place in the middle, rendering the references invalid.
