If the file name is ------.docx then it is a Microsoft Word file, not an SDLXLIFF file, unless perhaps the file name is really ------.docx.sdlxliff and you have set up your computer to hide file extensions.

An SDLXLIFF is already a bilingual file type. Perhaps that is why it doesn't work in the aligner. What you could do, is open th SDLXLIFF file in OmegaT, then set it to display only the target text (or only the source text, if that's what you're after), and then select all text in the editor and copy/paste it to a TXT file. Then try the aligner with the TXT file.

Thanks Feb 16, 2019

Thank you both for your help, always appreciated!
It seems this is the reason why it doesn't work (file being bilingual).
I'll see what happens with different file types and will keep you posted if I still have difficulties.

You need the Okapi plugin for bilingual SDLXLIFF file Feb 18, 2019

If it's a bilingual SDLXLIFF file, you need the Okapi plugin to see the target segments. Otherwise OmegaT only sees the source segments, which is probably why you are seeing the source language in both files.

realigning an existing .tmx file Feb 28, 2019

I was wondering if there is a possibility with the aligner to load and realign a combination of source/target texts that's already contained in a .TMX format?

If not, any suggestions for other convenient tools to do this?

Using Okapi Rainbow, you could convert your TMX into something that can be realigned:
