Is there anyone who can vouch that the site at http://185.13.37.79/ really belongs to the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission? At the site itself I do not find any contact info, the official site for the DGT ( https://ec.europa.eu/info/departments/translation_en ) does not mention the site anywhere, and the IP address is not registered to the EC.
I'm a bit hesitant to install software from a site without any credentials.
Thank you,
Rob

Hi Susan,
Thank you for your reply. But that's not a real verification; I could also post a message somewhere in which I claim to be the president of the Netherlands, but that doesn't automatically make me the president of the Netherlands...

P.s.:
Actually, the Netherlands doesn't have a president; we haven't left the middle ages yet: we're a kingdom. | | | Samuel Murray Нидерландия Local time: 12:08 Член (2006) Английски на Африкаанс + ...

It is my understanding that it does not.

The OmegaT developers are in frequent contact with the DGT-OmegaT developer, via the OmegaT forums, and they all appear to accept each others' bona fides.
This Google search may also contain something:

This URL only confirms that Thomas Cordonnier claims to develop DGT-OmegaT for or on behalf of the DGT. | |

That's convincing. And reassuring.

Hi all
The status of OmegaT inside Directorate General for Translation is, indeed, ambiguous. I will try to explain, I hope it will not appear too complex.

The status of OmegaT inside Directorate General for Translation is, indeed, ambiguous. I will try to explain, I hope it will not appear too complex.
Inside DGT, OmegaT has never been the official CAT tool, but a few translators decided that they preferred this one and were allowed to use it.
Later, this users, considering the fact that it is an open source software, meaning that it can be customized by a developer, asked for modifications. They were finally allowed to do so, but not to distribute the work on the internet.
Around end of 2016, having received some feedback from articles they had published in "a folha", users asked for authorisation to distribute our fork on the internet. The director accepted, but he only gives us an authorisation, no more: we received neither a budget nor any space in an existing server to host this project.
All the features which are in this fork and not in the original OmegaT have been developed by me, but, almost until 2016, upon request from internal users inside DGT and during my office hours inside DGT. After publication, this is still the case, except that I was also allowed to collaborate with external users and with OmegaT team, even in my working time (with the only condition that it has not top priority), so some of the new features are result from discussions in this forum and in the OmegaT's one.
I would conclude that this project is really developed inside DGT, but due to lack of support from our leaders, it is not one of the official projects of the DGT, which explains that it does not appear in the official pages.
I must add that I am not an officer and according to my contract, I am obliged to mention here that what I say is not the point of view of the European Commission. I have been allowed to mention DGT in the web site and also to keep the name for the application itself, even if they do not really own it, but since it is not an official project, I cannot ask them to give me a subdomain name, nor buy it myself because it could be considered as a unauthorized use of the name.
PS. You could have asked it using the contact form in the web site, I would have answered almost the same, but it is ok to have it here. The fact that there are no credentials in the web site simply means that my clients did not explicitly ask for it: they are more translators than jurists, but sometimes I must do exactly what they ask, because each time I ask a precision from a legal point of view, answer can take years to come.

Hello Thomas,
Thank you for your explanation; that's very clear.
And thank you for your work on DGT-OmegaT, which I'm sure many people benefit from (and I'm one of them now).
