Южнокорейская сторона настаивала на том, чтобы с северной присутствовал начальник Отдела Единого Фронта ЦК ТПК, который курирует межкорейские вопросы и по ее мнению соответствует по сфере своей ответственности южнокорейскому руководителю Министерства объединения. Северокорейская сторона же сочла, что если рядовому министру РК будет «противостоять» чиновник ранга не простого министра, а вице-премьера, это будет выглядеть как низкопоклонство и нарушение формального равенства статуса сторон.
Западной аудитории такой повод может показаться незначительным, но для Дальнего Востока, а особенно - для Кореи, где вопросам иерархии уделяется очень большое внимание, усадить за стол переговоров майора и генерал-майора является жестким оскорблением, унижением той стороны, которую представляет генерал.
Конечно, от этих переговоров мало кто ждал прорывных решений. После того, как политика Ли Мён Бака отбросила межкорейские отношения на 15 лет назад, между двумя странами накопился большой уровень недоверия, которое будет очень тяжело растопить. В такой ситуации обе стороны, обжегшись на молоке, дуют даже на холодную воду и рассматривают любые предложения противной стороны с точки зрения возможного подвоха. При этом, с одной стороны, каждый участник переговоров проверяет своего визави на искренность почти в провокационной манере («если вы действительно хотите договариваться, то не обратите внимание на…»), а с другой – и северянам, и южанам свойственно принимать вежливость за уступку, уступку – за слабость, а слабость считать поводом для поведения в стиле «поднажать и развить успех». Поэтому, хотя демонстрация желания вести переговоры лучше курса на обострение, процесс будет долгим, а маятник будет качаться.

That might seem like a minor concern to a Western audience, but in the Far East, and especially in Korea, where rank matters a great deal, for a major and a major general to face each other at a negotiating table would be insulting and degrading to the side represented by the general.
Few people expected the negotiations to produce a breakthrough, of course. The level of mutual distrust is high and will be difficult to overcome after Lee Myung-bak’s policies set inter-Korean relations back 15 years. Having had their feathers singed in the past, both sides examine any proposal by the other party for a catch. On the one hand, each participant in negotiations checks his counterpart for sincerity in an almost provocative manner (“If you really want to negotiate, you will ignore...”). On the other hand, both the Northerners and the Southerners tend to take courtesy for concession, concession for weakness, and weakness for an opportunity to “step up the pressure and shoot for the goal.” Therefore, although a show of willingness to negotiate is better than a policy of making things worse, the process will be a long one, and the pendulum will swing back and forth.

Мы прозвали его Кощей. Почему? Потому что он в самом деле был похож на того самого героя народных сказок и пушкинского Кощея, который «чах над златом». Тощий, словно весь из костей без мяса, с длинным носом и седыми всклоченными волосами. Казалось, он сошёл с книжной иллюстрации, где он сидел над раскрытым сундуком, охраняя колдовское яичко...
Кощей был каким-то начальником в кинотеатре «Заря», возможно, его директором. Вокруг «Зари» сгрудились пятиэтажные хрущёвки, забитые тесней чем ульи советскими семьями, где росли мы, дети того времени…
В «Заре» творилось волшебство. Там показывали фильмы. В тёмную комнату набивались сотни людей, смотревших, затаив дыхание, вперёд на экран. Здесь свершалось то, что мы никогда не видели на улице, и не могли вообразить. Пред нами мелькали томные женщины и мужественные мужчины. Какие чувства! Какие страсти!! Случалось, они даже целовались. И тогда мы, мальчишки, им улюлюкали. Диким рёвом встречали обрыв плёнки, особенно в самых интересных местах. Свистели, топали ногами и кричали киномеханикам: «Сапожники!!!»
А какие тут были автомобили! Роскошные, сверкающие никелем! Вот она, шикарная заграница! А у нас на улице только «Москвичи» и «Победы». Да изредка трофейный немецкий «Опель Капитан».
Каждый иностранный фильм был для нас выдающимся событием, особенно если он был американским. Пропустить его считалось непростительным грехом.
Фильмы о ковбоях шли вне конкуренции. Они были о том, что мы не могли описать нашим словарём того времени. Свободные, сильные, благородные парни… Они не потерпят зла и несправедливости. Не дадут себя унизить. И если кто-то в баре плесканул пиво в лицо ковбоя, то у него на поясе всегда был Кольт.
«Великолепную семёрку» мы смотрели по нескольку раз и не могли насмотреться. Разве можно такую картину сравнить с тем, что нам показывали на утреннике с детскими фильмами за десять копеек? Илья Муромец был, конечно, мужик удалой, но против Лимонадного Джо шансов у него не было. Однако, самый дешёвый билет на взрослый сеанс стоил двадцать пять копеек. Откуда у нас, мальчишек лет восьми-девяти, могли быть такие деньги? А тёмный зал в «Заре» манил к себе неумолимо…
И тогда мы делали то, что называлось «идти на прорыв». Это означало – любым способом попасть в кинотеатр, что бы для этого ни потребовалось.
Способов было несколько. Самый безопасный (и самый безнадёжный) – это «встать на вахту» у выходных дверей. А вдруг кому-то из зрителей фильм не понравится или ему невтерпёж захочется покурить, и он выйдет из зала на улицу, распахнув дверь. Тут мы, мальчишки, нырнём в зал. Но народ выходил редко. Поэтому мы пытались сами открыть ту заветную дверь. Надо было найти достаточно жёсткую проволоку, просунуть её меж дверей и приподнять накинутый крюк. Иногда это удавалось. Но работники кинотеатра заметили изрядно расковырянную щель между створками и прибили к дверям плотно прилегающие железные пластины.
Ещё был способ под названием «засланный казачок». Но он срабатывал, только когда на фильм шло много народа. Тогда ватага ребят у входа в фойе поднапирала на входящих граждан (не обращая внимания на их выкрики «Вы что толкаетесь?»), создавалась толкотня и возникала перебранка, которую пыталась утихомирить контролёрша, отрывавшая корешки билетов с надписью «контроль». В этой сутолоке кто-нибудь юркий из нас (например, Игорёк Юрченко) проскальзывал в фойе за спинами входящих. Святой долг «засланного казачка» был проникнуть в зал и открыть дверь для проникновения уже ожидавших на улице товарищей. Такой ловкий мальчик в нашей среде пользовался особым уважением. Но … на порожках, ведущих от входа к фойе и дальше к зрительным залам, часто стоял Кощей. Седой, насупленный и страшный, похожий на хищную птицу, высматривающую мышонка. При виде дежурившего Кощея посылать лазутчика мы не смели. Он наводил на нас ужас одним своим видом.
Иногда он спускался со ступенек, что-то говорил контролёрше. Наверное, призывал её к большей бдительности.
И ещё был способ. Но практиковался он только летом и ранней осенью. На боковой стороне кинотеатра на втором этаже открывались окна. Жарко, душно. Пусть зрители хотя бы фойе не сильно потеют.
Эти открытые окна притягивали к себе как магнит. Но как до них добраться? Выход (а точнее вход) только один – по водосточной трубе. Нужно очень осторожно, по-кошачьи, пролезть по ней наверх. Труба старая, ржавая. Если не выдержит – полетишь с ней в обнимку на асфальт. Это второй этаж кинотеатра. Или даже третий, если сравнивать с жилым домом. Потом надо тесно прижаться к окну и совершить поступок, от которого захватывает дух – пройти, ни за что не держась, несколько метров по узкому оцинкованному подоконнику. Слава Богу, что в дождливую погоду окна закрывались, и нам не приходилось идти по мокрому скользкому металлу. Да, было страшно. Но разве не шёл по канату шериф Джонсон, который потом застрелил главаря банды? Нам было на кого равняться...
И вот однажды я увидел то открытое окно. Не в силах преодолеть искушение, я полез на трубу… Подоконник тоже миновал благополучно. Спрыгнул внутрь фойе, сделал несколько шагов и … увидел перед собой Кощея…
- Таааааааак…. – зловеще прошипел Кощей. – Прорываемся, значит?
- Прорываемся, - промямлил я, не зная, что делать. Рвануть вдоль фойе и кинуться вниз в туалет? Но ведь он меня там найдёт! Запрыгивать обратно на подоконник? Высоко… Я стою, парализованный страхом.
- Пошли! – приказал Кощей и, повернувшись ко мне спиной, зашагал по фойе. Я безропотно поплёлся за ним. В конце фойе он повернул в узкий коридорчик, заканчивавшийся дверью, обитой чёрной клеёнкой. Открыл дверь, пропустил меня вперёд.
Я зашёл. Похоже, это его кабинет. На стенах – портреты советских кинозвёзд. К стене впритык стоит шкаф, забитый бумагами. Перед шкафом – большой стол под зелёным сукном. В углу – большое красное знамя с вышитыми золотом буквами – «Победителю социалистического соревнования».
Кощей сел за стол. Я стою напротив него.
- Как тебя зовут, - спросил Кощей, сверля меня серыми глазами из-под насупленных бровей.
- Серёжа, - пролепетал я дрожащим голосом.
- Куда же ты лез, Серёжа?
- В кинотеатр. Кино смотреть.
- Какое кино?
- Не знаю. Какое попадётся.
- Скажи, ты на детские утренники ходишь?
- Хожу. Но они не очень интересные.
- А что же тебе интересно?
- «Великолепная семёрка».
- Таааак... – протянул Кощей. – Значит, ковбои тебе нравятся?
- Ага, нравятся.
- Ты хоть думал, когда лез? А если бы сорвался? Разбился бы насмерть. Или инвалидом стал.
- Я не сорвусь. Я ловкий.
- Да уж…, - проворчал Кощей. – Видали мы таких ловких на кладбище. Что мне с тобой делать?
- Не знаю…
- Ааа…, - он почесал затылок и какое-то время молча рассматривал меня. Потом встал из-за стола и скомандовал: «Пошли со мной».
Он выходит из кабинета. Я следую за ним. Куда он меня ведёт? Наверное, в милицию. Ведь я нарушитель закона! Я сделал то, чего нельзя делать. Что теперь со мной будет?
Кощей подводит меня к двери зрительного зала, зашторенной тяжёлой бархатной занавеской. Оттягивает занавеску, приоткрывает дверь.
- Иди, - говорит он.
- Куда?
- В зал. Если захочешь фильм посмотреть, попроси контролёршу вызвать Василия Ивановича. Придумаем чего-нибудь. А через окна никуда не лазай. Договорились?
- Договорились, - ответил я и вошёл в тёмный волшебный зал…
Его советом я ни разу не воспользовался. Но в последующие годы я больше никуда и никогда не лазал через окна, а урок того хмурого страшного на вид человека запомнил навсегда.
We called him Koschei. Why? Because he actually looked like Koschei, the fairytale hero and character from Pushkin's Ruslan and Lyudmila who "pined away over his gold." He was skinny, with no meat on his bones. He had a long nose and unkempt hair. He looked like the picture of Koschei in a book I used to have that showed him hunched over an open chest, guarding a magical egg.
Koschei somehow came to be a manager in a movie theater called the Zarya. For all we knew, he might even have been its director. The Zarya was surrounded by five-story apartment buildings that had been constructed during Khrushchev's time. They were like beehives crammed full of Soviet families: that's where we grew up…
The Zarya was a place where magic happened. They showed movies there. It would be packed with hundreds of people gazing breathlessly at the screen. Things happened on the screen unlike anything we ever saw or could even imagine. Women with bedroom eyes and manly men flashed before our eyes. The things we felt! The passions we experienced! Sometimes they even kissed. And then we boys whooped and hollered. We roared when the film broke, especially when it happened in the most interesting places. We whistled and shouted at the projectionists: "You bunglers!!!
And the cars they drove! Sheer luxury, with lots of shiny chrome! How snazzy America seemed! The only cars running on our streets were Moskviches and Pobedas. Now and then we saw a captured German Opel Kapitän.
Every foreign movie was an event for us, especially if it was an American film. We thought missing one was unforgivable.
Movies about cowboys were the best. We didn't even have the words to describe them. The men in them were free, strong and noble... They lacked all tolerance for evil and injustice. They wouldn't let themselves be humiliated. If somebody in a bar threw beer in a cowboy's face, he always had his Colt revolver on his belt.
We watched "The Magnificent Seven" over and over again. We couldn't get enough of it. How could the kids' movies they showed at the children's matinee for 10 kopecks compare with a film like that? Ilya Muromets was interesting, of course, but he didn't stand a chance against Lemonade Joe. But the cheapest ticket for an adult showing was 25 kopecks. Where could boys like us, eight or nine years old, lay our hands on that kind of dough? But the dark interior of the Zarya was an irresistible temptation...
That's when we did what we called "Penetrating Enemy Lines." That meant getting into the theater anyway you could, no matter what it took.
We had several ways of doing it. The safest (and least likely of success) involved waiting at the exits. It occasionally happened that somebody in the audience didn't like the movie or desperately needed a smoke and would go out through one of the exits. Then we would dash into the theater. But people rarely left. So we would try to open an exit door ourselves. To do that we had to find a wire stiff enough to stick between the doors and lift the latch. That worked sometimes. But the employees eventually noticed that the gap between the doors was getting scratched up and nailed on thick iron plates.
We had another method we called "The Cossack Scout." But it only worked when a lot of people went to see a movie. A bunch of guys would gather at the entrance to the lobby and crowd against the people going in (ignoring cries of "Stop pushing!”). They would cause a ruckus and start arguments, and the ticket taker would try and calm things down. In the commotion, one of the nimbler boys (Igor Yurchenko was one) would slip into the lobby behind the entering patrons. It would be the sacred duty of the "Cossack" to get into the auditorium and open an exit door for his friends who were waiting out on the street. The boy who could do that was highly respected. However, on the steps leading into the lobby or further on, at the entrance to the theater itself, there frequently stood ... Koschei. He would hover there, gray-haired, frowning and menacing, like a bird of prey on the lookout for a mouse. No one could ever slip past Koschei when he was on duty. His very visage struck terror into our hearts.
Sometimes he would descend the stairs and say something to the ticket taker — probably telling her to be more vigilant.
There was another method, but it could only be used in the summer and early fall when the second-story windows on the side of the building were opened. They would do that on a hot, stuffy day so the patrons wouldn't sweat up the lobby.
Those open windows drew us like a magnet. But how could we reach them? There was only one way — up the drain pipe. You had to be careful and skinny up it like a cat. The pipe was old and rusty. If it didn't hold up, you would end up hugging the tarmac. The windows were on the second floor of the theater, or about the same height as an apartment building's third floor. You had to squeeze up against the window and do something heartstopping — ease several meters along a galvanized windowsill with nothing to hold onto. Thank God the windows were kept shut in rainy weather so we didn't have to walk on slippery wet metal. It was scary, of course. But hadn't Sheriff Johnson walked along a tight rope and then shot the leader of a band of robbers? He was our role model.
One day I saw an open window. Unable to resist the temptation, I scrambled up the drain pipe... I made my way safely along the windowsill. I jumped down into the lobby, took a few steps and ... there was Koschei right front of me...
"Soooo...," Koschei hissed ominously. "We got in, eh?"
“Un-huh," I mumbled, at a loss for what to do. Should I dart through the lobby and dash into the bathroom? But surely he would find me there! Could I jump back onto the windowsill? It was too high... I stood there, frozen with fear.
"Come with me! Koschei ordered and, turning his back, strode off across the lobby. I followed meekly behind. On the other side of the lobby he turned into a narrow corridor that ended in a door covered with black oilcloth. He opened the door and motioned me inside.
I entered. It was apparently his office. On the walls were portraits of Soviet movie stars. Up against the wall there was a filing cabinet stuffed with papers. In front of the cabinet sat a large desk covered with green cloth. In the corner hung a large red banner with gold embroidered letters — "Winner of Socialist Competition."
Koschei sat down behind the desk. I stood opposite him.
"What's your name," he asked, his eyes boring into mine from under lowered eyebrows.
"Sergei," I squeaked in a trembling voice.
"And what have you snuck into, Sergei?"
"The movie theater. I wanted to see a movie."
"What movie?"
"I dunno. Whatever's on."
"Tell me, do you go to the children's matinees?"
"Un-huh. But they aren't very interesting."
"And what kind of movies do you find interesting?"
"Movies like The Magnificent Seven."
Koschei drawled. You like cowboys?"
"Un-huh, I do."
"Did you stop to think before you climbed that drainpipe? What if it broke? You would have fallen to your death. Or you would have been crippled for life."
"I don't fall. I'm good at climbing."
"Sure you are," Koschei grumbled. I've seen where clever boys like you end up. What am I to do with you?"
"I dunno..."
He scratched his head and looked at me in silence for a while. Then he came out from behind the desk and said, "Come with me."
He walked out of his office, and I followed him. Where was he taking me? To the police, probably. After all, I had broken the law! I'd done something wrong. What would happen to me now?
Koschei led me up to the door leading into the auditorium, which was closed off by a heavy velvet curtain. He pulled back the curtain and cracked open the door.
"Go on," he said.
"Where?"
“Inside. From now on, if you want to watch a movie ask the ticket taker to call Vasily Ivanovich. We'll think of something. But don't climb in any more windows. Okay?
“Okay," I replied and went into the dark theater…
I never did ask the ticket taker to call Vasily Ivanovich. But in the years that followed I never climbed through any more windows, and I never forgot the lesson I learned from that sad, scary-looking man.

Я никогда не хотел иметь боевое оружие. Я вообще оружие не люблю, хотя изрядный кусок жизни отработал на оборонном предприятии. При виде пушки мне делается тоскливо, а когда вижу танк - у меня сосёт под ложечкой. Груда железа для массового уничтожения людей. Брр!
А вот к пистолетам я питаю слабость. Не знаю почему. В детстве не наигрался что ли? Впрочем, это увлечение не уникально. У мужчин это часто случается. Как свинка у детей.
Дома у меня целая коллекция пистолетов. Разумеется, не боевых, а пневматических. Боевой мне и даром не нужен. Да и травматический я не возьму. С ним только приключения искать на свою задницу. Зачем они мне? Ведь, как известно, раз в сто лет и палка стреляет.
В моей коллекции, есть и немецкий Вальтер (это как Mercedes среди машин), и американская Беретта (это Кадиллак), и российский Аникс (жигулёнок последней модели). Когда я остаюсь дома один, я раскладываю коллекцию на диване в соседней комнате, и работаю у себя в спальне.
Время от времени я вылезаю из-за стола, выхожу в комнату. Беру в руки пистолет, поглаживаю рукоятку, как похотливый импотент женские прелести. Иногда выхожу в сад, где у меня в уголке за сараем нечто вроде тира с бумажными мишенями, прикреплёнными к доске. Отстреляв обойму-другую, возвращаюсь на рабочее место.
Все мои пистолеты – самые лучшие в своём классе. Однако про их боевые свойства говорить не приходится. Вальтер, например, в холодную погоду с четырёх метров не пробивает картонную коробку из-под молока. Но если баллончик свежий, а на улице тепло (что повышает работоспособность баллончика), то с ближнего расстояния Вальтер продырявит пивную жестяную баночку.
И всё равно, эти пистолеты – игрушки. Остро заточенный карандаш – более эффективное и опасное оружие.
Захотелось мне свою коллекцию пополнить оригинальным изделием. Китайский пластмассовый шаромёт Crosman C11. Уж больно его хвалят в Интернете. Мол, не хуже российского Аникса. И цена невысокая (35 долларов в Америке, 100 у нас). Поэтому, как только я увидел его в нашем магазине, решил купить непременно.
Взял деньги (наконец-то кое-какие конторы со мной расплатились) надел свой «пояс шахида» (тяжёлый, набитый песком полотняный ремень, который я ношу для похудения) и отправился делать интересную покупку.
Сделал. Довольный (или почти счастливый?) вышел на улицу. Сел где-то на скамейке, огляделся и, убедившись, что никто не видит (мало ли что могут про меня подумать) вынул пистолет, повнимательнее рассмотрел, ощупал. Ничего особенного. Пластмассовая штамповка. А вот клип хороший, металлический. Снарядил его шариками, задвинул в рукоятку, положил игрушку в сумку и домой направился. Предвкушаю массу приятных эмоций.
Иду по берегу нашей разлившейся реки. Водой выброшены здесь кучи мусора. Банки, склянки, бутылки. Грязь. Народу – ни души. Даже собак не видно. Думаю, надо бы пистолет проверить. Вынул его и, высмотрев пустую пивную банку, выстрелил. Кажется, промахнулся. Выстрелил ещё раз. И ещё. Попал. Ладно, у себя в саду позабавлюсь вволю. Кинул пистолет в сумку. Иду домой. И вдруг кто-то меня окликает. Я оборачиваюсь. Милицейская машина. И два милиционера возле неё. Во! Откуда они? Словно с неба свалились!
Что делать? Ну, никак мне не хочется с милицией связываться (наверняка видели, как я по баночкам стрелял. Отнимут игрушку). И ничего мне в голову лучшего не приходит – как дать дёру. Не побегут же они за мной! Больно им нужно за кем-то гоняться, ботинки зря трепать. Знаем мы их…
И я побежал. Но куда бежать-то? Слева – река, справа забор какой-то. Тем не менее – бегу.
Представляете картинку? Бежит в горку мужик пенсионных лет, бежит-пыхтит (ещё бы ему не пыхтеть, когда на животе – пояс шахида, тяжёлый, как могильная плита), а за ним сзади милицейская машина. Она хоть и не гоночная, но едет всё равно быстрее любого бегуна.
Я уже подъём преодолел. Передо мной – церковь Успения Божией Матери. Оглядываюсь – нет ли где закоулочка, куда нырнуть можно. Мать Пресвятая Богородица! Спаси и сохрани! Но вокруг – только глухие заборы…
А милиционеры – вот они – сбоку. Тот, что за рулём сидит – хвать меня за куртку и держит крепко. Тут же второй из машины выскакивает. На капот меня швыряют, руки назад заламывают. Я не сопротивляюсь. Кричу только:
- Ребята! Что вы делаете? Отпустите! Давайте разберёмся!
Но они меня не слушают. Цок! Это щёлкнули наручники у меня за спиной. Боковым зрением вижу, как из церкви старушки выходят. Смотрят на происходящее и крестятся с испугом. Бандюгу поймали! Слава тебе, Господи…
Меня запихивают на заднее сиденье машины. Один милиционер садится за руль. Второй, с лычками на погонах, рядом со мною. Я в шоке. Никогда в жизни на моих руках не было наручников. Всё как будто не со мной и в кошмарном сне происходит.
- Ребята! – говорю я. Отпустите меня. Я только что этот пистолет купил. Он игрушечный. У меня чек на него есть. Посмотрите в кармане. У меня и паспорт с собой. Гляньте!
- Заткнись, придурок! - сержант ткнул меня в бок стволом укороченного Калашникова.
Я замолчал.
Приехали в районное управление МВД. Старое трёхэтажное здание с двумя новыми большими пристройками по бокам.
Меня заводят в конец длинного коридора на первом этаже. Снимают пояс, вынимают содержимое карманов. Наручники оставляют.
- Сиди здесь! - Сержант указывает на скамейку и уходит.
Рядом со мной на скамейке – мужик. Пыльный помятый алкаш. Лиловая, опухшая от пьянок физиономия. Похоже, он тут клиент регулярный. Руки у него свободны.
- Что? Менты замели? – обращается он ко мне.
Я молчу.
- Они такие. Людей ни за что хватают. Давить их сволочей надо. Вот этими руками.
Он суёт свои руки мне под нос.
- Но они не знают на кого напали. Они ещё узнают Ваньку Новикова.
Мужик встаёт и уходит.
Вскоре его приводят, держа за шиворот, два милиционера.
- Слушай, ты, хер моржовый. Сиди и не выступай. А то хуже будет.
Мужик покорно садится рядом со мной. Подробно и нецензурно объясняет свои взаимоотношения с милицией. От него разит перегаром и псиной. Мне сидеть рядом с ним противно. Встаю. Иду в конец коридора. Там – тот самый сержант с автоматом.
- Товарищ сержант. Ну, за что вы меня задержали? Что я такого сделал?
- Ты нам зеркало разбил.
- Не бил я вам ничего.
- Это мы ещё посмотрим.
Так… Разбитое зеркало – это моя работа. И если коробка передач в машине стучит – это тоже на меня запишут.
- Что я нарушил, товарищ сержант?
- Не переживай, дядя! Статью мы тебе найдём.
Как томительно долго тянется время… Через час-полтора ко мне подходит сержант и, видно подчиняясь приказу свыше, снимает с меня наручники и отдаёт бумажник, паспорт, и мобильный телефон.
Вот оно, устройство, которое связывает меня со всем миром, где бы я ни был, на каком бы необитаемом острове ни оказался. Ведь с его помощью я могу позвонить хоть в ЦРУ!
Но первейше звоню жене.
- Привет, дорогая. Ты не волнуйся, но я сейчас в милиции.
- Привет, дорогой. Объясни, что случилось.
- Потом объясню. А сейчас сообщи мне номер мобильника Ашота.
Ашот Мирзоян – мой хороший знакомый. Нашей дружбе, а точней – приятельским отношениям – уже лет пятнадцать. Он на нашей улице участковым лейтенантом начинал. Время от времени, мы помогали друг другу. Не одну бутылку водки совместно распили. Теперь он полковник МВД, начальник управления. Того самого, где я сейчас на скамейке сижу. Но он сейчас на Кавказе воюет. Это ещё наведением конституционного порядка называется. В одной маленькой республике ему пост замминистра предлагают. Но Ашот не спешит принять предложение. Он многодетный отец и жить хочет.
- Нет у меня его номера, - говорит мне в телефонную трубку жена.
Значит, Ашот отпадает. Что же я не записал его номер себе в телефон! Мог бы пригодиться! А ещё надо было занести в телефон фотографию, на которой мы с губернатором контракт подписываем. Было время, и в одной стране на ближнем Востоке мы продавали российские танки. Тогда он был ещё главным инженером. А я как был, так и остался переводчиком.
Ко мне подходит милиционер, здоровенный малый в сером пятнистом камуфляже и чёрном берете омоновца.
- Следуй за мной.
Я следую. Заходим в кабинет. Садимся за стол напротив друг друга. Он в звании майора, значит, фигура тут заметная. Широкоплечий атлет с большими сильными руками. Такой если занимается борьбой, то выступает как минимум в первом тяжелом весе. У майора красивое мужественное лицо, и весь его облик пышет здоровьем, силой и уверенностью. Он словно только что вернулся с боевой операции. Или сошёл с плаката «Приходите к нам служить в МВД».
- Стреляем, значит? - спрашивает он меня.
- Да там стрелять не из чего, товарищ майор, - говорю я. – Разве это оружие?
- А что же это? – майор выдвинул ящик стола и выложил передо мной мой пистолет. – Никто не скажет, что это карандаш.
- Карандаш опаснее, - возразил я.
Майор взял пистолет в свои ручищи, повертел его.
Мне показалось, что на его лице промелькнуло что-то вроде улыбки.
- Ознакомьтесь с протоколом и распишитесь, - сказал он, протягивая мне лист бумаги.
Я отлично знаю, как опасно подписывать какой-либо документ без его детальнейшего изучения. Но выходить-то из этого здания надо. Значит, не подписывать нельзя.
Я внимательно читаю протокол. Вроде так и было … Стрелял на берегу по банкам. Был задержан нарядом милиции. Сопротивления не оказал. Всё верно Чего мне бояться? Не преступник же я на самом деле! И я подписываю протокол.
- Всё. Можешь идти, - говорит майор.
- У меня к Вам две просьбы.
- Какие?
- Верните пистолет и не сообщайте на работу.
- Пистолет получишь у участкового. А на работу сообщать не будем. Свободен!
Я смотрю на него. Нет, он определённо хочет рассмеяться, но делает над собой усилие…
Выхожу из здания. Господи, неужели я свободен? Хочется закурить. Достаю сигареты. А зажигалку я обронил где-то.
Подхожу к группе оживлённо беседующих милиционеров.
- Извините, пожалуйста, у Вас не будет зажигалки?
Один повернулся ко мне.
- Мужик, ты совсем оборзел. ****уй отсюда!
……….
… Прихожу домой.
Жена на удивление спокойна. Смотрит на меня с иронией.
- Ну что, мил-человек, влип в историю?
- Влип.
- Что теперь делать будешь? Рассказ писать?
- Не знаю. Для начала я хочу просто спать.
Я завалился на диван. Уснул сразу же, как в пропасть упал…
И снится мне, что я на боевом задании где-то в горах. Нужно удержать перевал, не пропустить противника.
- Умрём, но враг не пройдёт, - говорит мой боевой товарищ и оборачивается ко мне. Это майор-атлет в пятнистом камуфляже. Он достаёт из-за пояса длинноствольный маузер.
- Они ещё узнают Витьку Фирсова, - отвечаю я и достаю из-за пазухи рогатку…
Проснулся я в холодном поту… Вышел в кухню. Попил воды из-под крана.
Утром я обнаружил, что у меня плохо сгибается в локте левая рука. А левый рукав куртки вырван «с мясом». Надо полагать, моё задержание было произведено не в самом мягком формате. Ничего! Куртка старая, а рука заживёт…
Сажусь за компьютер. Не спеша, обдумывая каждое слово, пишу объяснение. Пишу, что я – любитель-коллекционер пневматических пистолетов. Что мои пистолеты не являются оружием и все были куплены даже без предъявления паспорта. Что я совершил ошибку, когда после покупки очередного, не вытерпел и испробовал его на пустынном берегу реки. Что я чрезвычайно сожалею о содеянном. Что происшедшее воспринимаю как кошмарный сон. Что я – законопослушный гражданин, не занимающийся никакими противоправными делами, что может подтвердить мой товарищ, полковник Мирзоян, находящийся в служебной командировке.
На последний факт я особенно уповал. В официальных конторах, построенных на субординации, имя начальника много значит.
Днём я пошёл в управление. Дежурный сначала не хотел ничего от меня принимать. Но я настоял, сказав, что это вносит новую информацию в обстоятельства дела.
На следующее утро раздался звонок. Я снял трубку.
- Алло! Это из опорного пункта милиции относительно Вашего пистолета. Можете придти и забрать его.
- Спасибо большое. Когда можно это сделать?
- В любое удобное для Вас время. Это улица Первомайская 13.
Я с ликованием положил трубку. Неужели это – конец? Слава Богу! А как вежливо со мной говорили! Может, и в самом деле упоминание полковника Мирзояна возымело действие? На несколько секунд я почувствовал себя счастливым…
Тут же кинулся по указанному адресу. Некоторые участки пути не шёл, а бежал. Лишь только приближаясь к опорному пункту, я сбавил темп, чтобы выглядеть прилично и без одышки.
В опорном пункте (просторная комната полуподвального помещения) за столом сидел молоденький младший лейтенант. Белобрысый мальчишка, пухленькие щёчки.
Я поздоровался, представился.
Младший лейтенант предложил мне сесть и протянул лист бумаги.
- Вот расписка в получении. Распишитесь, пожалуйста.
Я расписываюсь.
Младший лейтенант открывает сейф за спиной, вынимает оттуда мой пистолет.
Держит его в руках, разглядывает.
- За счёт чего он стреляет, - спрашивает он меня и начинает тискать пистолет.
- Там в рукоятку баллончик с газом вставляется. Будьте поаккуратнее, товарищ лейтенант!
Желая быть максимально учтивым, я повышаю его в звании.
- Что же я, пистолеты, не знаю что ли, - отвечает он. И в этот миг звучит выстрел. Видно, белобрысенький заигрался и что-то не там нажал.
Я внутренне содрогнулся. Не хватало, чтобы товарищ младший лейтенант выбил себе глаз. Тогда мне точно не отвертеться.
Я смотрю украдкой на потолок. Сильный всё-таки пистолет. Не зря его в Интернете хвалят. Пулька ушла так глубоко, что щербинки почти не видно.
В комнату входит ещё один милиционер с погонами старшего лейтенанта. По-видимому, начальник белобрысенького.
- Это Вы владелец пистолета? - спрашивает он меня.
- Так точно, - отвечаю я по-военному. - От меня что-нибудь ещё надо?
- Надо чтобы Вы подписали акт о передаче Вашего дела на рассмотрение административной комиссией.
- Это что? Суд?
- Нечто вроде этого.
- А за что меня судить будут?
- Сейчас скажу.
Старший лейтенант снимает с полки книжку с российским триколором на обложке. Открывает её на странице с закладкой. Читает.
- Статья 20, пункт 13 Административного Кодекса. Стрельба из оружия в не отведенных для этого местах влечет наложение административного штрафа в размере до десяти минимальных зарплат.
Внутри у меня всё похолодело. Это огромные деньги. А мне зарплату уже полгода как задерживают.
Я понуро кладу пистолет в сумку, прощаюсь с милиционерами и плетусь домой…
Какой позор! Отец взрослых детей, специалист на хорошем счету в солидной фирме и попался, как шкодливый котёнок, ворующий сметану. Тьфу!
Дома сажусь за компьютер, пытаюсь работать. Не могу. Настроение поганейшее. Жить не хочется…
Проходит день или два. Раздаётся звонок телефона.
Я беру трубку. Со мной говорит женский голос.
- Алло! Это Виктор Фирсов? Вам необходимо явиться в отделение милиции для уплаты административного штрафа.
- С удовольствием. Какова сумма штрафа?
- Вам назначено пятьсот рублей. Но если Вы не уплатите в срок, Вам будут начисляться пенни.
- Я заплачу сегодня же! Сейчас!
Я хватаю деньги и бегу в отделение милиции. Я ликую. Пятьсот рублей – это не десять зарплат!
Прибегаю в отделение. Захожу в какую-то комнату. Передо мной – стройная симпатичная девушка в штатском.
- Штраф за пистолет – это Вам заплатить?
- Да мне. Но через сбербанк. Вот вам направление. Вернёте мне его вместе с квитанцией об уплате.
Я бегу в сбербанк. Там – длиннющая очередь. Но надо её выстоять и поставить точку. Надоело!
Вот и окошко оператора. Я протягиваю направление и пятисотенную купюру.
- Мне надо оплатить штраф.
- С Вас ещё пятьдесят рублей за нашу услугу, - говорит мне женщина–оператор.
Я достаю бумажник.
Скорей, скорей снова в отделение милиции. Отдать им всё и умыть руки.
В той же комнате меня встречает та же симпатичная девушка.
- Вот и всё, говорит она мне. – Дело закончено. Можете идти домой.
«Неужели это – конец?» – думаю я. Достаю из кармана шарик. Диаметр четыре миллиметра. Между двух пальцев его почти не видно.
- Смотрите, девушка, - говорю я. – Этим шариком даже воробья убить невозможно. А против меня целое дело возбудили.
- А я здесь не при чём, - отвечает мне девушка.
В этот момент в комнату входит мужчина в костюме. Невысокий, лысый, спортивного сложения.
- Вы чем-то недовольны? – спрашивает он меня.
- Он говорит, что к нему были применены слишком суровые меры, - объясняет девушка.
- Что? Суровые меры? Да мы Вас по самому нижнему пределу оформили. Вы легко отделались! Наш начальник очень заинтересовался Вами. Жаль, что дело уже закрыли…
Я выхожу на улицу. Ярко и горячо светит солнце в конце апреля. Да, пожалуй, я всё-таки легко отделался.
Так китайский пистолет пополнил мою коллекцию. Пистолетик, надо сказать, дрянцо. Пластмассовая мыльница. Упадёт на пол – расколется. Разве сравнишь его с Вальтером из воронёной стали? Лежит он у меня в блистере за диваном. Я на него иногда смотрю, кое-что вспоминаю, и брать его в руки мне совсем не хочется…
I’ve never wanted to own a military weapon. I don't like weapons in general, even though I’ve spent a good part of my life working in a defense plant. The very sight of an artillery piece depresses me, and I get butterflies in my stomach whenever I see a tank. It's a heap of metal intended for killing people in large numbers. Brrr!
But I have a weakness for pistols. I don't know why. Maybe I didn't have enough fun when I was a kid. I'm not the only one who feels that way, though. It's pretty common among men. Like mumps in children.
I have quite a collection of pistols at home. They aren't real guns, of course — they're airguns. I don't want anything to do with real guns. I have no desire to hurt anyone. I'm just looking to have fun while sitting on my ass. Why do I have them? I guess it’s because you only get a chance to do some things once in a blue moon.
In my collection I have a German Walther (that's the Mercedes of airguns), an American Beretta (the Cadillac) and a Russian Anics (it's like the latest model Zhiguli). When I'm at home alone, I'll spread out my guns on the sofa in the next room while I'm working in the bedroom.
Now and then, I get up from my desk and walk into the living room. I pick up a pistol and caress its grip like an impotent man stroking a woman's curves. Sometimes I go out into my garden where I have something like a shooting range with paper targets tacked to a board in the corner. I'll shoot a clip or two and then go back to work.
Each one of my pistols is the best in its class. That's not to say they shoot all that well, though. The Walther, for example, won't penetrate a milk carton from four meters away in cold weather. But if I have a fresh CO2 cartridge and it’s a warm day (which makes the cartridge work better), the Walther can punch a hole through a tin can at close range.
Still, my pistols are just toys. A sharpened pencil is a more effective weapon — and more dangerous, too.
I got an urge one day to add something different to my collection: a plastic Chinese-made Crosman C11 BB gun. People on the Internet speak highly of it. They say it's at least as good as the Anics. And it's cheap ($35 in America, or $100 here). So as soon as I saw it in a store, I decided I had to have it.
I got my hands on some money (some agencies I'd worked for settled accounts with me), put on my "suicide belt" (a heavy canvas belt filled with sand that I wear to lose weight) and set off to buy my new toy.
I made my purchase and walked out of the store satisfied (maybe even almost happy). I sat down on a bench somewhere, looked around and, convinced that nobody could see what I was doing (you never know what people might think), took out the pistol, looked it over very carefully and hefted it. It wasn’t anything special. Molded plastic. But it had a nice clip; it was made out of metal. I loaded it with BBs, inserted it into the grip, put it back in the bag and headed for home. I was looking forward to having some fun.
I strolled along the bank of the swollen river that runs through town. The stream had dumped piles of garbage there. Cans and bottles. It was muddy. There wasn’t a soul in sight. Not even a dog. I figured I should check the gun out. I took it out of the bag and, spotting an empty beer can, took a shot. Missed. Shot again. And again. Hit. Great, I can have a great time in my garden. I put the gun back in the bag and headed for home. Suddenly, I hear somebody calling out to me. I turn around and see a police car with two cops standing next to it. Whoa! Where did they come from? Its like they fell out of the sky!
What should I do? I don't want to get mixed up with the police. (They probably saw me shooting at the tin cans and will confiscate my toy). I could think of nothing better to do than take to my heels. Surely they wouldn’t chase me. Cops don't like chasing people. It messes up their boots. Yeah, I know those guys…
So I take off running. But where should I go? The river is to my left, and some kind of fence is to my right. But I run anyway.
Get the picture? I'm puffing through a crowd of old men (who wouldn't puff with a belt as heavy as a gravestone around his waist?) and there's this police car following right behind me. It's not a race car, but it could still move a lot faster than a running man.
I run up a hill — in front of me I see the Holy Assumption Church. I look around around for an alley I could dive into. Holy mother of God, save and deliver me! Where’s nothing around me but solid fences…
And the cops had come up right alongside me. The one behind the wheel grabbed my jacket Then the other one jumped out of the car. They threw me on the hood of the car and twisted my arms behind me. I didn't resist. I just shouted: "Guys! What are you doing? Let me go! Let's talk about this!
But they didn't listen. Click! They handcuffed me behind my back. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw some old ladies coming out of the church. They watched what was going down and crossed themselves in fright. Thank God, they caught a crook…
They put me in the back of the squad car. One of the cops got behind the wheel. The other one, with stripes on his epaulets, got in beside me. I'm in shock. I've never been in handcuffs before. It's a nightmare.
"Guys," I say. “Let me go. I just bought this gun. It's a toy. I've got the receipt for it. Look in my pocket. I'm carrying my ID. Just look!"
"Shut up, you idiot!" The Sergeant pokes me in the side with his short-barreled Kalashnikov.
I stop talking.
We arrived at the MVD district office, an old three-story building with a large new wing on each side.
They led me all the way down a long corridor on the first floor. They took my belt and everything I had in my pockets, but they left the handcuffs on.
"Sit down there!" The sergeant pointed to a bench and left.
There was a man on the bench next to me: a dust-covered, bruised wino. His face was purple, and swollen from a drinking binge. He looked like a regular customer. I noticed he wasn't wearing handcuffs.
"So you got dragged in by the cops, too, huh?" he said.
I didn’t answer.
"That's just like them. They grab people for no reason at all. The bastards need to be crushed. And these are the hands to do it!"
He shoved his hands under my nose.
"They don't know who they're dealing with. They'll learn who Vanka Novikov is yet."
He stood up and left.
Soon, two cops came dragging him back by the collar.
"Listen, you asshole. Sit there and don't move — or else."
The guy meekly sat down next to me. He described his run-ins with the police in obscene detail. He reeked of alcohol and smelled like a dog. Sitting next to him was disgusting. I stood up and walked to the end of the corridor. The sergeant that arrested me stood there with an automatic rifle.
"Comrade Sergeant, why am I being held? What have I done?
"You broke our mirror."
“I didn’t break anything of yours.”
"We saw you."
So… A broken mirror — that was my fault. And if the transmission clatters — they'll write me up for that, too.
"What am I being charged with, Comrade Sergeant?"
"Don't you worry, old man, we'll think of something."
Time passed painfully slowly… The sergeant walked up to me an hour or an hour and a half later and, apparently on orders from above, removed my handcuffs and returned my wallet, my ID and my cell phone.
There it was, the device that connects me with the entire world wherever I am, even on a deserted island. Why, I could even use it to call the CIA.
But first, I called my wife.
"Hi, honey. Now don't get all upset — I'm at the police station."
"Hello, dear. What happened?"
"I'll explain later, but right now I need you to give me Ashot’s mobile number."
Ashot Mirzoyan is somebody I know well. We've been friends — or to be more precise, on friendly terms — for 15 years. He started out as a local police officer in our neighborhood. We’ve helped one another helped from time to time. We even shared a bottle of vodka on occasion. He's an MVD colonel now, over a district office. The very one where they had me sitting on a bench. But at the time he was fighting in the Caucasus. It's called restoring constitutional order. A small republic once offered him a job as deputy minister, but Ashot was in no hurry to accept. He had a lot of children and wanted to live.
"I don't have his number," my wife said.
So calling Ashot went out the window. I hadn't put his number in my phone. It might have come in handy! Yet there was a photo on the phone of us signing a contract with some government official. We had just sold some Russian tanks to a Middle Eastern country. He was the plant's chief engineer then and I was his translator. Now, he's a chief of police, and I'm still a translator.
A cop comes up to me, a burly young guy wearing a gray camouflage uniform and the black beret of an OMON trooper.
"Follow me."
I follow. We go into an office and sit down across a desk from one another. He's a major, meaning he's an important guy here. He's a broad-shouldered, athletic looking man with big, muscular arms. If he were a wrestler, he’d be in the top weight class. The major had a handsome, masculine face, and he was glowing with health, strength and confidence. He looked as though he had just returned from a combat operation. Or dropped off a recruiting poster for the MVD.
"So, you've been shooting a gun, eh?" He said.
"But I didn't have anything to shoot with, Comrade Major," I said. "That thing isn't really a gun?"
"Then what is it?" The major opened a drawer and laid my pistol in front of me. "Nobody would call it a pencil."
"A pencil's more dangerous," I objected.
The major picked up the pistol and twirled it.
I thought I saw something like a smile flash across his face.
"Read this statement and sign it," he said, pushing a sheet of paper toward me.
I'm well aware of how dangerous it is to sign anything without reading it over very carefully. But I had to get out of that building. So not signing wasn't an option.
I read the statement very carefully. It said I had been shooting at tin cans on the riverbank and had been arrested by a police patrol. It said I hadn’t resisted. That was all true, so what was I afraid of? I wasn't actually a criminal! I signed the statement.
"That's all. You can go," the major said.
"I have a request."
"What is it?"
"Give back my pistol and don't tell my employer."
"You can pick up your pistol from the officer at your local station. And we won't tell you employer. You're free to go!"
I looked at him. He definitely wants to laugh, but he's trying to control himself…
I walk out of the building. But am I really free? I need a smoke. I buy some cigarettes, but I've lost my lighter somewhere.
I walk up to a group of policemen engaged in a lively conversation.
"Excuse me, please, could I get a light?"
One of them turns to face me.
"Man, you've got a lot of nerve. Get the f*** outta here!"
I went on home.
My wife is surprisingly calm. She gave me an ironic look.
"So, dear, did you get in trouble?"
"Yep."
“What are you going to do now? Write about it?"
"I don't know. Right now, I just want to sleep."
I sprawled on the couch and dropped right off to sleep, like falling off a cliff.
I dreamed I was on a combat mission somewhere in the mountains. I was supposed to hold a pass and not allow the enemy through.
“We’re going to die, but the enemy isn't getting by us," my comrade-in-arms said, and he turned to look at me. It was the athletic-looking major in the camouflage uniform. He pulled a long-barreled Mauser pistol out of his belt.
"They're going to remember Vitka Firsov," I said and pulled a slingshot from under my shirt.
I woke up in a cold sweat and went into the kitchen. I drank some water from the tap.
The next morning, I found that my left elbow was stiff and the left sleeve of my jacket torn. Apparently, my arrest hadn't been very gentle. But no matter! It was an old jacket, and my arm would heal…
I sat down at my computer. I took my time, thinking carefully about every word, and wrote an explanation. I explained I’m an airgun collector, that my guns aren't weapons. and that I hadn't needed an ID to buy any of them. I admitted I had made a mistake when I bought my last airgun and hadn't been able to resist trying it out on the riverbank when no one was around. I wrote that I was very sorry for what I had done and that I regarded the outcome as a nightmare. I pointed out that I was a law-abiding citizen who wasn't engaged in anything illegal, and that my friend, Colonel Mirzoyan, who was on a temporary duty assignment, could vouch for me.
I put a lot of faith in that last point. The boss's name carries a lot of weight in the hierarchical structure of a government office.
I went back to the police station that afternoon. The duty officer didn't want to accept anything from me at first. But I insisted that it would provide new insight into my case.
My telephone rang the next morning. I picked up.
"Hello, I'm calling from the police station about your pistol. You can come down and pick it up."
"Thank you very much. When can I come?
"Whenever is convenient for you. We're at 11 Pervomaiskaya Street."
I gleefully hung up the phone. Could it really be over? Thank God! And he had actually been polite to me! Could mentioning Colonel Mirozyan’s name have paid off? I felt happy for a few seconds…
I went to the address I was given right away, running part of the way. I only slowed down when I was close to the station so as to look presentable and not out of breath.
Behind a desk in the station (a spacious room in the semi-basement) sat a young junior lieutenant, a blonde guy with plump cheeks.
I said hello and introduced myself.
The junior lieutenant offered me a seat and gave me a sheet of paper.
"Here's a receipt for your property. Sign it, please."
I signed.
The junior lieutenant opened the safe behind him and took out my pistol.
He held it in his hands and looked it over.
"How does it work?" he asked and began fiddling with it.
"There's a CO2 cartridge in the grip. Be careful, Comrade Lieutenant!"
I bumped him up in rank to be as courteous as possible.
"What, you think I don't know about pistols?" he said. Just then there was the sound of a shot. Apparently, the blonde lieutenant had pressed something he shouldn't have while playing around with it.
I shuddered inwardly. It wouldn't do for the young junior lieutenant to shoot his eye out. I knew I wouldn't get out of there if that were to happen.
I glanced furtively up at the ceiling. It's a powerful pistol. There’s no wonder it got such good reviews on the Internet. The BB had gone in so deep that the hole was barely visible.
Another cop with the epaulets of a senior lieutenant walked into the room. He was apparently the blonde guy's boss.
"So you're the guy who owns the pistol?" he said.
"Yes sir," I answer like a soldier. "Do you need anything else from me?"
"I need you to sign this document transferring your case to the administrative commission."
"What's that, a court?"
"Something like that."
"What am I being charged with?"
"I'll tell you."
The senior lieutenant took a book with the Russian tricolor on its cover from a shelf and opened it to a bookmarked page. He read:
"Article 20, paragraph 13 of the Administrative Code. Firing a weapon in areas not designated for that purpose is punishable by an administrative fine of up to ten times base pay."
Everything inside me went cold. That was a lot of money. It meant I wouldn’t receive a paycheck for six months.
I sadly put the pistol in the bag, said goodbye and trudged home…
What an absolute disgrace! I was the father of grown children, an expert in good standing at a prestigious company, and I was being treated like an unruly kitten caught stealing cream. Ugh!
Returning home, I sat down at my computer and tried to work. I couldn't do it. I was in a lousy mood. I wanted to die…
A couple of days went by. The telephone rang, and I picked it up.
I heard a woman's voice.
"Viktor Firsov? You need to come down to the station and pay an administrative fine."
"I'll be happy to. How much is it?"
“It's 500 rubles, but there’ll be an added fee if you don't pay on time."
"I'll pay it today — right now!"
I got the money and ran down to the police station. I was elated. Five hundred rubles — that's not ten paychecks!
I ran into the station and go into a room where I find a pretty girl in civilian clothes.
"Are you the person I'm supposed to pay the fine for my pistol to?"
"That's me. But you have to pay it through your bank. Here's the citation. Bring the receipt of payment back to me."
I ran to the bank. There was a long line, but I had to wait it out and put the matter to rest. I was fed up with the whole situation!
I reached the teller's window and passed over the citation along with a five-hundred ruble bill.
"I need to pay a fine.
"That will cost another fifty rubles," the teller told me.
I pulled out my wallet.
I rushed back to the police station to hand everything over and be done with the matter.
I found the same girl in the same room.
"That's it," she said "You're done. You can go home."
"This is it — it’s over?" I thought. I pulled a BB out of my pocket. It was about four millimeters in diameter. Held between two fingers, it was barely visible.
"Take a look at this, young lady," I said. "You couldn't even kill a sparrow with this BB. And this is what the whole case against me was about."
"That's neither here nor there," she said.
Just then, a man in uniform came into the room. He was a short guy, balding, with an athletic build.
"Are you unhappy about something?" he asked.
"He claims his punishment was too harsh," the girl explained.
"What? Too harsh? You were treated as leniently as the law allows. You got off easy! The chief took a special interest in you. It's too bad the case is closed…"
I walk out onto the street. The late April sun is bright and hot. Maybe I did get off easy after all.
I’ve added a Chinese pistol to my collection, although I have to admit it's a piece of junk. A plastic toy. It would break if I dropped it on the floor. It can't compare to my Walther with its blued steel finish. It’s lying behind the couch in its blister pack. I look at it sometimes and remember everything I went through, but I have no desire to take it out and hold it...

My leadership experience taught me the importance of being a good team member, doing quality work, and meeting obligations.
