memoQ is independent. Most other tools are not:
- Trados is affiliated with RWS
- Wordfast is affiliated with TransPerfect
- CafeTran is affiliated with ProZ
- Transit is affiliated with Star
- Matecat is affiliated with Translated
What remains? memoQ, Across, OmegaT, Swordfish, and some web-only tools.

Why would you use a web-based CAT tool?
Because it makes sharing of resources among colleagues easy, allowing collaborative work on projects. Also, some people are terrible at backups, and a private tool like WFA can prevent loss of precious data. Finally, continuous improvement is much easier on web-based tools, as you do not have to download patches and service packs and whatnot. You are always on the latest version.
The crucial word was not independence, but commitment.

My colleagues and I used Lingotek, a web-based CAT tool with shareable TM. The thing was, we had only one translator per language, so sharing the TM was a moot point. The apparent advantage was how well the TM operated in real time.
I think memoQ will have to be more upfront and forthcoming to win over thousands of desktop memoQ users. Just the occasional LinkedIn posting by some memoQ officer won't be enough to educate people about the advantages of using a web-based CAT tool. ... Until recently, individual translators could use memoQ's Language Terminal to share TMs and TBs online with a colleague so they could collaborate on a big project and see each others' TM entries, which helped with consistency. I used it once, and it was a great function. Then memoQ scrapped it. Will that web solution provide this feature again? They don't say. It seems we'll be in limbo in terms of new features – even just getting the ones we had already – for many years now. | | | kd42 Естония Local time: 10:20 Английски на Russian My exterience using online tools is bad | Apr 26 |
What comes to my humble mind is that they will sell bilingual data to AI-tutoring companies and prosper.
I have clients for whom I work in an online tool, these solutions have nothing to do with ease of use or new features, I attribute their success solely to the work of their marketing team, legal compliance, etc. The translator clearly suffers using these horrible online warez. I have no doubts that the online MQ will be just as bad. | | | Thomas T. Frost Португалия Local time: 08:20 Датски на Английски + ... It still promises new product features even though we have been told no new features will be introduced. I suppose someone just forgot to update the notice, but I find it a bit distasteful that they are promising something – for money – that they know they will not be delivering. After all, this is their responsibility, not mine.
Needless to say, I will not be renewing. ▲ Collapse

What CAT tool still delivers new features? | May 22 |
I'm not taking memoQ's side, but for the sake of discussion, which CAT tool continues to provide new features nowadays, in 2025? I mean real, substantial features that make the act of translating more efficient, as opposed to snazzy dashboards and all that fluff aimed at enterprises.

Márton Horvath, Support Manager, has told me the following:
'Our stance on adding new features to the desktop version does not change - i expect the marketing e-mail to be outdated.'
'Our marketing department has confirmed that they will update the auto-mail asap.'
If anyone else receives an SMA renewal notice, maybe they could let us know if the new-feature promise has been removed. | | | jyuan_us Съединени американски щати Local time: 03:20 Член (2005) Английски на Китайски + ... Why do you need new features in the first place? | May 29 |
I cannot help but ask this question.
I thought the existing features were sufficient for most translators.

I need new features to keep streamlining my work, becoming more efficient. If you stop developing a product, it will eventually begin to atrophy and fall behind. memoQ still has many quirks where functions are not as optimal as they could be. The world around us evolves. Software needs to keep up.
The existing version 11 will presumably be good enough for working a number of years, but sooner or later, it is likely that one or more flaws will make working with it more cumbersome. At that point, it may be goodbye to memoQ unless they have developed an alternative with the functions we need that can replace the desktop version.
Since the renewal emails still promise new features, I asked them to clarify why they promise something they know will not be delivered. | | | Michael Beijer Обединеното кралство Local time: 08:20 Член Холандски на Английски + ... Igor never ceases to amaze me with his ability to keep coming up with cool new features.

It always helps to have some down-to-earth developer who is enthusiastic about the product rather than people like Balazs Kis, memoQ co-founder, 'Chief Evangelist' according to himself, who, as far as I can deduct from his rather lofty LinkedIn posts, has completely lost interest in us mere translators – those poor sods who do that actual core work.
I guess memoQ for translators will eventually be turned into some Memsource/Phrase-style toy without the more advanced functions we are used to. We just don't know. They've pulled the plug without being clear about what to expect. | | | Страници в темата: < [1 2 3] | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » No more new features for memoQ desktop Protemos translation business management system | Create your account in minutes, and start working! 3-month trial for agencies, and free for freelancers!
